Did Dalton Schutlz earn his paycheck in 23'?

I would be interested to read an informed analysis of how Schultz did in 23'.  Run blocking, pass blocking, catch rate, YAC, etc.  As amateur fans most of us aren't qualified to grade players.  With that said, my impression is that Schultz dropped too many passes, particularly for what he was paid.  But, I may be mistaken.  Schultz may want top dollar and we might be better off letting him walk and drafting another or signing another for much less.

Thoughts?

If you look at the teams in the final 4, the lions, 49ers and ravens all have great TEs and of course the cheifs have possibly the greatest. The bills have a really good rookie TE

I think you have to have a 1,000 receiver and a TE that can get 600-800 yards in order to be multidimensional.

so we either need to sign one or draft one and maybe Shultz is that guy but we’ve got to have one.

Schultz got 650 yds

Schultz is a good TE. Him and CJ have great chemistry and genuinely I’m done with the fact the best TE we’ve had in recent memory is Darren Fells lol. Schultz was an awesome FA pick up and he picked up a lot of the heavy lifting when Tank went down.

Top TE money though? Ehh… I don’t even know what that looks like, maybe top 10 and only top 5 if we can make it somewhat franchise friendly in length. He’s only 27 and TE’s last a while. We also have the cap space.

Him, Tank, Nico, and Singletary are a great corps. I think you add a middle of the pack FA WR (Marquise Brown, Calvin Ridley, Mecole Hardman) and there is no stopping this offense.

TE is a relatively cheap position - Darren Waller and TJ Hockenson set the bar currently at $17mm/yr. For a comparison point, that's a little less than what Seattle WR Tyler Lockett makes ($17.3mm/yr).

I don't think you need to match that dollar amount at all with Schultz - Hockenson was nearly a 1,000 receiver this year and is a highly graded blocker, so he's earned the right to set the bar.

Comparatively, Schultz should be in the same ballpark as Dawson Knox - 5/$52mm, for roughly a $10mm AAV. That would make him the 9th highest paid TE in football, not close to the top paid guys, but in the same realm as guys who are as productive.

I'd offer Schultz a similar deal to what he had this year, maybe slightly more. The drops. Deal breaker for me. QT and Jordan are fine, we can build on top of that. It's not hard to find solid TE play. It would be nice to have him back, I think he's got a good connection w Stroud, good veteran presence, but I'm not like, bidding for him against someone else.

Not hard to find?

Who has been as good as Schultz since OD retired?

Now if you told me Caseio could sign Noah Fant or Hunter Henry at 3 years 30 million, I would let Schultz walk.

I don't think either Fant or Henry would command $10mm AAV - per Spotrac (not the authority but pretty accurate) Henry has a $7mm AAV, 3/$21mm is more applicable.

Fant is worth even less, he's currently on a 4/$12mm deal ($4mm AAV) and he's underperformed THAT deal. Playing him more seems like a real risk with no actual proof of a reward available.

If you wanted to roll the dice and let Schultz walk, you're probably best served giving Henry a deal similar to what Schultz got here last offseason - one year for $6-$7mm max to "reset" his market value. If you go Fant, go lower (I'm not opposed to Fant as competition to Brevin Jordan...)

I feel like Fiedorowicz was pretty good for a while, so was Daniel Fells that one year. Hell, Ryan Griffin played very well for us 2017. Maybe Schultz has a slight edge on those guys, but he's definitely replaceable in terms of his on field production.

I like Fant as an option if Schultz is trying to re-set the market for TEs

Drops are overstated imo, he’s had three important ones but other than that he’s reliable. The drop against the Colts was immediately made better by a TD catch that was a great grab.

You could let Schultz walk for another TE of slightly better ability but you have a guy who wants to be here, had a relatively good season and has chemistry with our franchise QB. At the end of the day Schultz is a sure thing.

I'd go Henry - Fant was a combine darling a few years ago, but has steadily regressed and never lived up to the hype. Athletic marvel but can't get open or block.
