I feel that if we can keep Orr, Weaver, and Chuck Smith, our front 7 will still be really formidable. It's just a question of how much our pass defense will suffer with MacDonald and Wilson leaving.

Hopefully Chris Hewitt retained a lot from them.

Really like Orr hire. He’ll have some growing pains but so did Mike. Much better than Weaver IMO

It would make a lot of sense for Chris Hewitt to be a veteran coach to join Macdonald’s staff in Seattle considering his defense and special teams experience could be invaluable in establishing McDonald’s culture over there.

In terms of Orr, I’m glad we retained our young talent. As long as we can retain Chuck Smith than I’ll be a happy camper. I’d prefer Weaver to stick around as well for his leadership and ability to hopefully get a HC role and net us draft picks in the future.

I’m not too concerned. With the talent on the defense and the talent that should be back, we should be able to win with talent even if scheme isn’t always “genius” tier.

Mike Mac had one year DC experience before we hired him, and that was in college.

he had been coaching way longer than orr (i think) and not everyone is going to be macdonald. plus we were open to hiring from outside, and he earned jim's seal of approval. this just seems like we didn't even try to look and just hired from within.

i know harbaugh loves his guys, but we've had a lot of success hiring from outside, i would've liked to see that continue.

We just don't have enough intel on Orr to make a call either way on this one. Obviously the org thinks highly of him and the players love him though, so there's reason to be positive.

As others have mentioned I just want to make sure we retain Chuck Smith and others.

Orr has been coaching here since 2014 and has been with the ILB's for the past 2 seasons as their individual coach.

We had tons of guys within the organization we could've hired. It seems like Weaver could have been the choice but he's going to be a HC or DC this year or next year anyways so it would've been a 1-year rental. Orr gives us a chance to have a guy for maybe 2-4 years depending on how teams view him as a HC candidate. The only other viable internal candidate is Chris Hewitt.

External candidates are junk tbh we have a great system, why not continue with that?

Orr was a very cerebral backer on the field. There’s no reason to believe that he can’t be a great DC until he shows otherwise.

He’s been coaching for 7 years now and playing all his life. Macdonald has been coaching for 13 years, 10 years prior to getting his DC shot. So really it’s not that huge of a difference overall.

Dennard Wilson was good enough to be the Titans' DC and it sounds like we preferred Orr over him for the role. Transitive property suggests he was a better option than outside options and not someone we settled on.
