NFL Draft

1st

Chris Braswell, EDGE, Alabama (6-3, 255 pounds)

Braswell offers some standout athletic qualities that have allowed him to shoot up draft boards. He uses speed, quickness, and burst to make a ton of plays. He just needs to play more disciplined at times.

  • 2nd Jets

Edgerrin Cooper, LB, Texas A&M (6-3, 230 pounds)

Cooper has become a borderline first-round prospect by showing the necessary speed and quickness to go with his top coverage skills.

2nd

S TYLER NUBIN, MINNESOTA

Nubin is an experienced safety who can play both free and strong responsibilities. He's reliable in run defense, but his most impressive trait is his anticipation in coverage. There are more athletic safeties in this class, but few, if any, can see the game better than Nubin.

  • 3rd

Christian Mahogany, G, Boston College (6-3, 322 pounds)

Mahogany is an athletic attacking guard in the running game who has some untapped potential in inside pass protection.

  • 3rd (via Buffalo Bills)
Pittsburgh image Matt Goncalves, OT, Pittsburgh
Height: 6-6. Weight: 330.
Projected 40 Time: 5.35.
Projected Round (2024): 2-4.

1/6/24: Goncalves is a big edge blocker for the next level who has experience starting at left and right tackle for Pittsburgh. The Panthers bounced Goncalves back and forth between right and left tackle over 2020-2022, and as a senior, he was starting at left tackle before going out for the year with a lower-body injury that required surgery. Goncalves is big, strong, and has good enough movement to stay on the edge in the NFL. He also has the body type to be a candidate to play guard as a pro.

Alabama image Malachi Moore, CB/S, Alabama
Height: 6-0. Weight: 190.
Projected 40 Time: 4.44.
Projected Round (2024): 3-4.

1/6/24: During 2023, Moore recorded 36 tackles, an interception and three passes broken up.

  • 4th (Allen Lazard)
New Hampshire image Dylan Laube, RB, New Hampshire
Height: 6-1. Weight: 225.
Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
Projected Round (2024): 3-5.

1/27/24: In 2023, Laube averaged 4.5 yards per carry for 715 yards and nine touchdowns. He showed impressive receiving ability as well, recording 68 catches for 699 yards and seven scores. His best season came as a junior, when he averaged 4.9 yards per carry for 1,205 yards and 15 touchdowns. He caught 49 passes that season for 464 yards and two scores as well. Laube is put together nicely and could rise if he works out well before the 2024 NFL Draft.

  • 5th (traded to Buffalo Bills)
  • 6th
Auburn image Justin Rogers, NT, Auburn
Height: 6-3. Weight: 332
Projected 40 Time: 5.33.
Projected Round (2024): 5-7.

1/13/24: In 2023, Rogers totaled 17 tackles and one sack. He is a late-round backup-caliber player.

  • 6th (Jarran Reed)
Auburn image Jaylin Simpson, S, Auburn
Height: 6-1. Weight: 178.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2024): 4-6.

1/6/24: Simpson was a good defender for Auburn during his senior year. There is no doubt that he needs to gain weight for the NFL, but he is a smart defender who is dependable in downfield coverage. He also is a fabulous special teams player.

  • 6th (Dean Lowry)
Clemson image Will Putnam, C/G, Clemson
Height: 6-4. Weight: 315.
Projected 40 Time: 5.25.
Projected Round (2024): 4-6.

1/6/24: During 2023, Putnam was decent for Clemson and extended his starting streak to 50 games.

Rice image Luke McCaffrey, WR, Rice
Height: 6-2. Weight: 195.
Projected 40 Time: 4.53.
Projected Round (2024): 5-7.

1/27/24: McCaffrey caught 71 passes for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023. During 2022, he caught 58 receptions for 723 yards and six touchdowns. McCaffrey is the younger brother of 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

Not a huge fan of Nubin.  A little slow for my taste.  Good football player, just not the sideline to sideline guy you'll need in the Hafley defense.  I think there is a role for him in a zone defense, just don't think he has the speed or agility to handle the water bug receivers at the next level.  Will be curious to see his numbers at the combine.

That was the knock-on Kyle Hamilton too.

Not a fan of signing a RB in Free Agency, especially with Jones already on the roster.  Would rather see money spent in FA filling a hole on the roster. Draft a RB in the mid-rounds and let him learn under Jones, or a vet that comes on the cheaper side of things.

Its still very small for a DE. I'd rather take another athletic off ball OLB. When would he play? In place of Gary or Vaness?

I don't feel like 255 is too small to be an EDGE when we are in a true nickel defense.  We go into nickel when they are also light.

Also?  As you well know, we do like them heavier.

You also know you can't have enough pass rushers.

I'm not advocating for him at all.  I know next to nothing about him.  Just what I've read.  Plenty of pressures there.  But I don't think he will be the pick.  There are other guys that I feel are better for what we need at that pick.

Not trying to dog you too much, just wanted to know why.

IMO that’s just small for an edge in a 4-3. I know we’ll play nickel but it’s still small. Unless you think they’ll pull Clark or Wyatt off the field to move Vaness or Gary inside but… yuck.

I love the Cooper pick and would also be ok with Payton Wilson being drafted right after Cooper. Would give us 3 fast long athletic LB’s to fly and fill behind our DL.
