textaz03
Going retro. If he can instill some discipline into that unit, and stop the run, I’ll be happy.
MaddHatter
Is what it is… shame we didn’t even interview Jim
plan9misfit
Horrible. Jim Harbaugh was out there and we didn’t even bother. Instead, we stuck with a gutless fat load and brought The Village Idiot back to run a defense that he couldn’t run previously.

This isn’t “retro”. This is typical Jones lazy nepotism.

Jerry kept Garret all those years even after he iced his own kicker.
WizardHawk
Solid, unsurprising hire. Zim is probably best case scenario of those interviewed. This time next year, we’re probably hashing out the entire staff regardless.

Dallas94Ware
Am I in the minority if I say I don't totally hate this? Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a great hire or that I'm happy. I was adamant about Shane Bowen for HC let alone DC. I think there's something special to his game planning. But Zimmer has the experience. And his system, a variation of cover 2, cover 3 and cover 4, accentuating the front end with a rush heavy style backed up by those zones, could well be a solution to the troubles against the run. Turning your back to the play to cover in man vs facing the play in zone allows backers, corners and safeties to remain engaged against pass, run and play action. He isn't one of those chaotic blitz heavy minded coaches, or a young exotic designer of something modern (which is what I wanted). But his approach offers both a combination of keeping it simple, approaching the D the same way the last coordinator did, while also offering something in the changes that could strengthen the weakest point of the unit. It's not a total bust of a hire I think. It's just a very uninspiring and uninspired hire. A young defensive mastermind probably wasn't going to happen so long as Mike remained HC. The experience was necessary to give this regime and roster one last go at things. On the flip side of that thought. This hire of a very experienced and sound DC likely means this absolutely it for both Mike and Dak to get the job done once and for all. This is a move that guarantees you know what you're getting, as opposed to not knowing what you're getting and potentially ruining the last chance for this regime and roster with an inexperienced hire. So I get it. And I don't hate it. I just hoped for something with more sparkle to it. Something that could offer Parsons a real future on this team as a true Rover linebacker. This move also likely sets up Al Harris for DC after this season. He will likely be more involved now in setting up a call sheet, installing and creating game plans, and managing the game day adjustments while learning under another veteran coordinator with a similar, yet different, approach to coverage. At least one would hope that is also part of the goal.

An inexperienced and flashy hire could cost the team that last chance by being a total flop. At least with Zimmer you know what you are getting. It might not be a superb hire, but it shouldn't cause a total fiasco either. Another veteran DC also allows guys like Al Harris to learn under another long time coordinator and HC, and become more involved with the call sheet, game planning and such to set him up to eventually take over when or if this regime and roster gets overhauled when they fail miserably again. D82
I'm whatever at this point. This season is basically going to be a mulligan unless they somehow miraculously reach the NFC Championship Game.
MaddHatter
Of the people the interviewed, he was the best option, but Od have preferred they atleast look at Jim
matt79511
My instinct is that this is a good hire. Probably the safest move they could’ve made. Next matters of business are (1) what to do about the run defense and (2) will anything change about Parsons’ role

Will Overshown be rdy by season opener ?
WheatieMan
Joke franchise folks. 9-8 could win the division though.
