The only way the lions can keep paying their own players like this while remaining contenders is if they continue to have exceptional drafts. What Amon is now getting paid and what Goff and Sewell are about to get paid makes our window considerably smaller, unfortunately. So the pressure is on Brad Holmes.

Brad Holmes has done a remarkable job with the draft during his tenure.  However, now that the Lions are drafting later in the draft I think there is more pressure on the coaching staff to develop players that have tools and potential into high-level contributors.  They had at least one coach in D-Line Coach John Scott Jr who was terrible at teaching even very talented players.  Dre Bly, who is generally regarded as a great person, didn't get the greatest results as a CB Coach.  They made some very important moves with their coaching staff by bringing in Terrell Williams and Deshea Townsend.  The are both proven NFL coaches and good developers of talent.  They will need to be able to take some lesser-known players with potential and get the most out of them.

I mean, the Eagles are an example of another team that's doing this, too. Like you said, you just have to hit on the draft.

But that also means you might not resign some more "fringe" guys like Barnes or Melifonwu next year. McNeil could go either way.

I feel like McNeil and Iffy are the type of guys we need to sign in place of signing guys like Cam Sutton and DJ reader in future years.  It will be important to draft well for sure, it always is especially if you don't have a Patrick Mahomes, but keeping guys you know fit your system on reasonable deals will be crucial.  Unless Iffy blows up all year I don't see him being a super expensive S, similar to what Walker signed for after his first deal.  McNeil might price himself out of our range but hopefully we can then tag him and trade him or will at least get a comp pick if he is much more than what Reader cost us.  Hutch has three years until he gets his big deal, Sewell has two years.  The ARSB deal will be almost over when Hutch is due to resign so we can cross that bridge when we get there.  It may lead to trading ARSB at that point so our real window is the next three years.

Knowing something was going to happen and doubting it was going to happen are two mutually exclusive thoughts.

The Sun God has been woefully underpaid in his time as a pro. Glad to see he got his payday and glad he's going to be around a while longer. He's an example of a guy who has earned it and should have younger guys emulating him.

Starting have doubts in entirely different than doubting it but hey. Whatever

Sewell got extended as well.

I'm not sure if we'll even have a choice with McNeil. If he has another year like he did last year, performing as a top 10 DT in the league that will likely push him to go a around or above the 20m a year mark in value.

With 30 mil a year or so going to be needed to secure Hutch long time soon enough I'm not the we'll be able to afford to keep McNeil after todays extensions and the inevitable Goff deal.

Based on this, we have structured this pretty smartly.  The next two years are very cheap for his services and then it shoots up.  We already have one void year on this which I hate so if he converts more base to bonus in the future it will be spread out.  That final year likely will not be in place with him either being traded or extended.

That being said, 2026 will be a weird year for us.  ARSB and Sewell get big cap hits starting that year so hopefully the cap greatly increases by then.  We currently have 1 player making 30+M against the cap in Goff and Decker is next at 19M. In 2026 ARSB will hit 33.1M against the cap and Sewell will be 28M.  Then depending on what happens with Goff's extension he may be up in the high 40s.  Hutch will be on his 5th year option which also will likely be in the 20M range unless he extends similar to Sewell.  Going to be interesting to see how Holmes manipulates the cap over the next couple of years.  We have 23M in dead cap right now and will need to try and avoid that in the future but if we keep adding void years, we won't be able to avoid it.

On avg over last 10 years and that is even with the year of reduction the cap has gone up on avg 6.9%

Future years

270M

286M

303M

321M

341M

If it tracks like it has historically they will be fine imo

Eagles are going to have to tear that team down in couple years. All that money to OL too

I read that somehow they are playing the system by having the contracts void after June 1 or something like that to spread out the money more. Or having guys add years but they agree to void the contract at some point.

They have to be doing something odd because they've handed out 4-5 big deals this off season alone

Just the regular void years.

But they will need a "reset" year like the Bills
