Bengals place franchise tag on WR Tee Higgins

I can't imagine how they can maintain Burrow, Higgins, and Chase all long term while still having reasonable money to spend long term. And unfortunately for the Bengals, Chase is likely to sign after Justin Jefferson resets the market.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Higgins get $28M AAV, and then Chase is seeking something like $35M AAV

Burrow: 55M
Chase: 35M
Higgins: 28M

$118M with a salary cap around we'll call it 280M give or take in 2025-26 accounts for north of 40% of the cap on three (very talented) guys.

The structure will make a difference.

Burrow has $38M in 2025 and $40Min 2026 that is movable to future years.  With restructure and voids, Cincy can push $30-$32M of that do furure years to keep his cap hit lower if needed.  Eventually it will come due, but their window is open now to contend/ win a title.

I'm sure the Bengals are going to try to keep Burrow happy by keeping Higgins and Chase, but that defense is starting to erode. They've held it together before with cheap veteran FAs overperforming their contract and Lou's coaching, but I don't see that as sustainable and IMO they are trending toward a bottom 8 defense.

The defense was disappointing last year for sure. Bengals had the highest paid D-line in the NFL but they didn't play like it. Mainly it was the loss of Bates and Bell at safety. The first was inevitable, the second a mistake by the Bengals.

Higgins won't get a long term deal at 28 mil from any team. Spotrac had his market value at 16 mil (before the big cap increase was revealed). He'll be lucky to get a deal that averages his tag number. Bengals won't extend Chase this offseason, though I probably would if 5 new years with 160 mil in new money got it done.

Bengals don't use void years and hate guaranteeing money after year 1 of contracts. But we have a good bit of cap space available thanks to prior conservative management of the cap. We should be able to fill a few holes in free agency before the draft without having to give up on extensions for Higgins or Chase.

It’s a lot, but those AAV figures won’t be what the actual cap hits will be for a long time.

Higgins > Kirk and Kirk got 20m AAV.

I could see Higgins getting 22 or so.

Yeah... so what you're saying is, Higgins is gonna get a better contract on the open market. And then once he hits the open market, his cost goes up.

on a long term deal, you're looking at like 27 for Higgins if he actually hit market

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that people are underestimating how nutty the receiver market is going to get. Everyone's goal right now should be to get their guy signed before JJ and every receiver should be set on waiting until JJ signs this year.

I suspect that JJ breaks the market with something close to the Nick Bosa Contract. Say 35-36 million aav.

After that, I suspect Lamb is over 30. ASB and Aiyuk likely asking for around that amount.

Pittman and Higgins shouldn't be too far behind.

Yup.  Jefferson,  Lamb, ARSB, Aiyuk  are all going to be pushing the top of the WR market.

Higgins might just play on the tag and then look to hit FA in 2025 whwn the top of the market is higher
