Dallas94Ware
While waiting an absurdly long time at the doctor's office today, I pulled up some old clips of Overshown at college. As well as some scouting reports and then TC reports from last season. I was really excited for Overshown to be on this defense. Everyone gives Parsons all this credit form being so multidimensional but truly, all he's been for Dallas is a pass rusher (a problem that would require its own thread). But with Overshown, he really is multidimensional. A real swiss army knife defender. With him healthy. It will be as if the team has added an extra top 100 pick this off-season because we didn't have the luxury of fielding him last season. And all the early camp reports about where he was lining up, what he was doing and how he was performing were all very positive. While that doesn't mean that translates to game day, it definitely fits with the film of him at Texas. Physical presence inside at Mike? Check. Off the ball coverage in zone from both the Will, the Sam and as a nickel package backer? Check. Speed off the edge lined up as a tweeners DE/LB or what most just call now an "edge"? Check. Burst to the ball? Check. Burst through the line on blitzes? Check. Cover a tight end? Check. Cover running backs? Check. I mean this kid literally did everything at Texas. Maybe not to the degree of success equally across the board. But he still did it with success. I think very truly that he could be an amazing addition to the defense this year. While Zimmer is not exactly known for his tricks and utility defenders like Quinn was, he definitely is known for finding roles for a good player and making that role a cornerstone of his defense if they do it well enough. So while we might not see Overshown playing that multitool role, moving around the chess board and effecting the game in different ways like people give Parsons undeserving credit for doing...I think whatever role Overshown is put into, he will shine at it. And if Zimmer does move him around, all the better, as the kid could potentially become trouble for QBs to identify presnap on what his role is going to be. Is he rushing? Covering? Dropping back? Read it wrong and you easily set your protection wrong, or throw to a player who wasn't as open as you thought he'd be. With him returning this season, and the need for LB growing (rumor on X is that LVE may have to call it a career), and the team absolutely needing to improve the play of the interior of the front 7, Overshown could potentially be a solution to all of those. Did this really need a thread? Nah. But I got pretty excited reminding myself of what he could have been for the defense last year. And if he can bring that to the table this year, and his injury is fully healed and he hasn't lost his confidence to rely on that leg...it'll be just as if we added another early pick to the team this off-season.
