53 Man Roster Projection

Too bad about that, would've liked to see Barbre win it this week and get a full week of first team reps next to Paradis. He looked really good against the 49ers.

VJ also confirmed only 2 QBs will be carried on the 53 man roster, LT competition officially over, and Jamaal Charles will play "a lot" against Green Bay.

Vance just announced that the OL is set save for LG, which he says is between Max Garcia and Allen Barbre. They will leave Ron Leary at RG.

although Leary at RG is kind of a head scratcher, the lack of shuffling will be a good thing as opposed to last year

Barbre not getting the starting nod is pretty baffling. Garcia has shown little to indicate he is anything but a low tier backup talent.

I think it's because Barbre just started getting extensive work with the first team last week.

Seems to me that the make up of the 53 will be:

2 QB

5 RB (Including Janovich)

6 WR

3 TE

9 OL

7 DL

9 LB

9 DB

3 Specialists

That looks pretty good to me. I've been thinking along the same lines. I think there's a chance we go with 8 LBs, two at each spot, and 10 DBs.

It's a possibility, but with Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett both facing a race against time to be fit for the opener, I don't see us having out of position rookie Demarcus Walker as the only healthy OLB opposite Von. I have to think that either Kasim Edebali, Danny Mason or Vontarius Dora will be on the team.

If we do keep 10 defensive backs, then either Chris Lewis-Harris or Jamal Carter would probably be the 10th guy, but right now I think CLH will be released and we probably try to get Carter on the practice squad.

At the moment I have:

Siemian/Lynch

Anderson/Charles/Henderson/Ridley/Janovich

Thomas/Sanders/Latimer/Fowler/McKenzie/Taylor

Green/Derby/Heuerman

Bolles/Barbre/Paradis/Leary/Watson/Sambrailo/McGovern/Stephenson/Garcia

Crick/D.Peko/Wolfe/Gotsis/Jarrett/Kerr/Harris

Miller/Ray/Barrett/Walker/Edebali

Marshall/Davis/Nelson/Anderson

Talib/Harris Jr/Roby/Langley/Doss

Ward/Stewart/Simmons/Parks

McManus/Dixon/Kreiter

Chad Kelly, Devontae Booker, Carlos Henderson, Jake Butt, Kyle Peko all on some kind of injury list to start the season.

Schofield was a better fit in the ZBS, had the prerequisite athleticism to succeed there. But in this scheme, Leary, Garcia, Barbre, McGovern and Billy Turner are all bigger and stronger. Schofield hasn't even gotten 2nd team reps in a long time, he's been behind Billy Turner all offseason.

Yeah I think Dora sticks for a week or two but once Shaq and Shane are both 100% he'll probably be cut since Walker can, supposedly, function as the 5th OLB. Edebali I see as a lock to make the team as the 4th OLB.

Wish we had kept Watson tbh.

I did like Watson. Good pickup for the 49ers.

We're really going to miss Ware though, although it may not feel like it now. Ray and Barrett are pretty good players but even in his last season when Ware was on the field he was still making some plays only a handful of guys in the league could make as an edge rusher. Having two freaks like he and Von on opposite sides was a luxury we're unlikely to ever have again. Shane Ray is more of an effort guy, Barrett is just a good versatile player.

Ya, I don't understand why we didn't keep Watson but then again I didn't understand most of the moves we made this offseason. He showed a bit every time he got a snap last season, and showed a ton in preseason. Going from Watson to Dora is a subtle but telling move showing the brass is making a silent rebuild/retool. No way we make that swap if we were still all-in for a Super Bowl, as outrageous as that may sound.

The combo of Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett will be fine. Ray has some lapses, but there was a significant improvement in his technique from his rookie year to last year. Shame he got hurt because I think that will continue. If I had to guess right now, I'd say the roster will be:

QB- Siemian/Lynch

RB- Anderson/Booker/Henderson/Ridley

FB- Janovich

WR- Thomas/Sanders/Fowler/Latimer/McKenzie/Taylor (C. Henderson on IR/PUP)

TE- Green/Derby/Heuermann (Butt on PUP)

OL- Bolles/Leary/Paradis/Garcia/Watson/Barbre/McGovern/Stephenson/Turner

DL- Wolfe/Peko/Crick/Walker/Jarrett/Gotsis/Kerr

LB- Miller/Ray/Barrett/Edebali/Marshall/Davis/Nelson/Anderson

CB- Talib/Harris/Roby/Langley/Lewis-Harris

S- Ward/Stewart/Simmons/Parks

K/P/LS- McManus/Dixon/Kreiter
