Anthony Lanier potential for 2018?

Alright fellas , one thing I'm enjoying about this season is that the Greek and Lanier have been big surprises this year .

today Lanier completely took over the game having 2 sacks and 3 pass deflections including a FF .

he hasn't even been on the roster all season but you can see flashes of him being good .

whats this man potential do you see him as a starter next year or just an amazing rotation player ?

Lanier-Greek-Allen

?? Would they be our starting 3-4 defensive lineman?

I don’t think Ioannidis is a NT. He’s a better fit at 3-4DE. Ioannidis and Allen are better run defenders than Lanier.

To me, Lanier is an amazing rotational player that we should bring in when we go nickle.

The best thing for us to do is draft or sign a true free agent NT who can help stuff the run on 1st downs and short yardage. That NT would start with Allen and Ioannidis at DE. Then, we’d take the NT and Ioannidis off the field in passing situations and put Lanier in to play next to Allen.

None of these guys are NT and they seem to think that position is not valuable. Hell, Ziggy Hood was playing NT because the idiots dont see the value in drafting a guy that can't or shouldn't rotate along that line.

You need at least two players at NT, with McGee/Ioannidis capable of spot duty. You have five spots for DE.

2 Starters: Ioannidis and Allen
2 Reserves: McGee + ? (McClain)
Dead Weight: McClain
DE #5: Lanier

They should cut McClain and replace him with Lanier because of the cost difference, but that contract might mean McClain gets a second year. If that happens, Lanier is in a tough spot. They should get another upgrade in the draft at DL, if it is where it should be (NT), there is some hope for Lanier. Either way, Lanier is a pass rush specialist and therefore he is realistically DE #5 and must compete every season for his spot.

He had one good game. One. Let's hold off anointing him as the next great one.

He's a rotational player.

Arizona line is badly decimated with injuries. They had a rookie LT and their 4th and 5th running back options and their third qb option. Gabbert is not an nfl player. Agree hold off and lets see how he does against legitimate nfl talent.

Have to love Arians. What a coach to have all of this and still keep his team competitive. Just imagine if we were on our third string qb to go with our other injuries.

Blaine Gabbert, who started the last five games, will go back to the bench. Gabbert struggled mightily in yesterday’s loss to Washington, completing just 16 of 41 passes for 189 yards, with no touchdowns, one interception and three fumbles. To find the last player who completed 16 or fewer passes while throwing more than 41 passes in a single game, you have to go all the way back to . . . Blaine Gabbert, who went 16-for-42 in a Jaguars loss to the Saints in 2011.

Am I encourage that he balled out? You bet. He flashed ability and showed he was working. That's the kind of effort and production that should be awarded.

But let's take a look. He's been on the bench for most of the season and was pressed into more snaps due to injuries. He's basically "fresh legs" at this point.

And the Arizona OL was also playing backups. So that helps.

Still, he deserves a chance to compete for that (as @footy_29 pointed out) #5 DL slot.

Oh and BTW - he was great at getting his hands up on passing plays. I don;t recall seeing our DL do that very much this year. Do we not coach that anymore??

Well that’s what I said.

Also, the reason they don’t draft or sign a true NT is because we play a one-gap scheme and have since 2014 and in that scheme the NT plays just the 1 gap on the side of the center and shoots that gap. That’s fine most of the time but in short yardage it kills us.

I do believe we need to draft or sign a true NT who’s 310 pounds plus. I wish Taylor hadn’t gotten hurt because it looked like he was going to be the answer there on run downs this season but we need to draft a guy like him. We need a Payne, Nnadi (FSU) or Veta.

He and Galette both did. I’m sure they are coached to do it but if the pass rusher isn’t paying attention to the QB and when he’s about to throw they are still trying to beat their man to the Qb. It’s a timing thing. Obviously practicing it more would help though.

While they are in their #3 qb, the injuries otherwise between the two teams are similar and we’ve had the hardest Schedule in the NFL by a wide margin.

We’ve certainly had more injuries than they have had on defense.
