I'm new!  Good stuff around here, guys.

That said, sorry; my first post is going to be nitpicking. :)  O'Daniel won't be playing safety.  Big Red & Veach have both been quoted saying he'll be a dime package LB and special teams ace in year one.  If he impresses, he could potentially earn more time, but he'll mostly only be playing on passing downs to cover TEs, RBs and play down hill to shoot gaps.  As for Watts, I like your optimism, but I think it's Murray's job to lose.  Watts has huge playmaking ability, but he's pretty undisciplined and will need to learn not to gamble as much in the NFL.  I think that as soon as he can show an ability to adjust that part of his game, the job will be his.

Reordered the Safeties, what do you think?

And what about the OLB position opposite of Houston? Zombo seeing some serious competition? He's got only 170 k$ in dead money if released ...

If I am reading this right, Speaks is not intended for OLB. They want him to add bulk for DE. A 2-gap DE would be very welcome and they are hard to find. The real use in the nickel. Whether you call it 2-4 or 4-2, DE is an interior pass rush position.

I agree, Z may be in for a real fight. Not just Kpassagnon but also Eligwe.

Not entirely, no.  Big Red & Veach both said they want him to be our ROLB.  However, with his size and experience at anywhere from 3 technique to 7 technique, they also value his versatility on the DL.  Being able to line him up anywhere in blitz packages or on the line in different fronts is mainly why they seem to like him so much.  Plus, he plays with such a high motor that he'll be in the play regardless of where he lines up.  He doesn't have elite burst or bend, so don't expect him to be the next Von Miller.  I think Justin Tuck is probably the best NFL comparison for Speaks, even though he's slightly more athletic than Tuck was.  I see Kpassagnon as more of a true 3-4 DE than anyone on our roster not named Chris Jones.

To clarify: I don't see O'Daniel as a true Safety but something like Sorensen played often in light packages: close to the box. Berry did it with some real success like three or four years ago? I have no clue how to indicate that on a standard depth chart. In the end it only matters if he is franchise one day - as LB are paid a bit better than S.

That said: I'll move him back to LB ... :D

As for Speaks: The Chiefs list him as a LB, and Reid compared him heavily with Tamba. We probably

This I agree with. He'll be a LB with a lot of coverage responsibilities. The term Dimebacker is descriptive. He lacks size, but he has great range and is a hell of a blitzer by reputation.

With Robert Golden's release and Sorensen's injury now even the body count at Safety becomes an issue - unless some of the young guys I listed as CB actually play at Safety.

Chiefs released S Robert Golden.

A former Steeler, Golden was not being considered for the Chiefs' starting job opposite Eric Berry and asked for his release. Golden could catch on elsewhere as a special teamer but isn't a starting-caliber NFL safety.

I agree and it would not surprise me. Some of the CBs in camp have been around for a few years. They know how the NFL works even if they were unable to contribute.

Chiefs signed CB Orlando Scandrick, formerly of the Redskins, to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

Scandrick was let go by Washington last week. He fills a need for the Chiefs, who are looking thin in the secondary following the offseason departures of Marcus Peters (traded to the Rams) and Terrence Mitchell (signed with Cleveland). Steven Nelson's concussion Friday night likely created an even greater sense of urgency. In KC, Scandrick will likely back up Kendall Fuller at slot corner. Aug 19 - 8:26 AM

We needed some help at the position, so it's good to see that something is happening there. I dunno how much Scandrick has left in the tank, through.

Wasn't aware Nelson suffered a concussion .. no way I can watch those evening games with a kickoff at 1AM over here.

The next week will be better. The game will start saturday at 7pm for us.
