One piece away?

I got this idea from another football segment, but the premise was “The *insert team* is ____________ away from winning it all”.

So my question is simple, what piece are the Lions away from winning it all? Who is the one player (hopefully realistic trade or free agent target) away from putting them over the top?

I was pounding the table for a trade last year but PK Daniel Carlson from the Raiders would pretty much answer our PK questions for 2-3 years.

After watching Jake Bates today, I really hope the Lions find a veteran upgrade at PK.  Jake Bates had never been a PK until his UFL stint.  His consistency is a real issue.  Maybe the Lions think he will settle down as the season wears on.  Personally, I think he needs to marinate on the PS.

He missed a FG but a lot of kickers miss FGs.  He is 6/7 in the preseason and hit a game winning FG against KC last week.  He hasn't shown to be more inconsistent than most kickers so far so not sure why you freak out from this one game.  He did have a shaky start to camp but I am fine with him at PK, given how little we actually use them anyways.  You mention Daniel Carlson who was an 86% kicker last year.  Thats exactly what Bates has done in the pre-season including a few from 50+.

I have been kind of checked out during training camp this year, so it's possible that I'm off. However, I haven't seen anything in articles that I have read indicating anything different.

I'd like to see someone like Courtland Sutton and/or Cameron Heyward be added. I'm concerned about the lack of our WR depth. I do believe I've heard that Jamo has been performing well, which is a plus.

I haven't seen anything about an edge opposite of Hutchinson emerging and feel that should be addressed as well.

I don’t have a name but they really need a tall wideout that can catch.

One article suggested WR Hakeem Butler.  At 6'5" and 227 Lbs, he would fit the bill for a tall WR.  He had a great run in the UFL but was waived by the Bengals.

Jake Bates has been all over the place in practice.  He may have hit a game-winning FG but he shanked and extra point.  It might be due to his inexperience but there is still noticeable variation with his mechanics/form.  He isn't great on kickoffs right now either.

By all over the place you mean he missed one FG and an XP than sure.  But he has been fine this pre-season.  he has been better than what we had.  He has a bigger leg than what we had, and he is working on things with the new kickoff rules.  He will be fine.  Your concern when he is doing all he can right is overblown.  Dan Campbell and Holmes have come out saying they know there may be growing pains with him but they are riding with him and I understand why and his performance to this point has earned him the job IMO.  Again, DC doesn't like kicking much anyways so IMO he wants a sketchy kicker so its easier to explain going for it to the media.  But if needed, I trust Bates about as much or more than any kicker we have had in here since Prater.

Also, last year Justin Tucker missed an XP. Butker missed 3 in 2022 and is 94% on his career on XP's. Daniel Carlson is a career 96% on XP and and 88% on FG. Thats pretty much exactly what Bates has done so far. Having realistic expectations and standards for kickers is important when criticizing them.

Nobody has a perfect roster.   You guys have enough to get there and win.

You have to stay healthy and execute.

Losing any of St. Brown, LaPorta or Hutchinson would make things very difficult.

I agree with you.  I would have like to see a move for Matthew Judon.

He's already been traded to Atlanta.

To answer the question of the thread. We're zero pieces away.
