Week 1: SNF Los Angeles Rams @ Detroit Lions

My initial thoughts:

1. The Rams offense will be tougher to deal with now that they have a more healthy Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua going into his second year.

2.  I think our D-Line is going to create problems for the Rams.  Stafford won't be able to hold the ball too long.

3.  The Rams have a few pieces on defense but they are going to have problems slowing down the Lions offense.

4.  Welcome back Jonah Jackson.  I hope you enjoy having DJ Reader and Alim McNeill in your grill.

It's the pass rush. Rams WRs will get open even if our secondary is highly improved (though that will take a few weeks at least if you ask me). The league is built and designed for pass offenses to succeed. We all know that Stafford is susceptible to pressure (all QBs are), so if we get it, we'll win.

It is going to be a challenging first game for Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw.

The bar isn't set that high after Sutton and Vildor where the starters last time.

That might be true.  The rookies will have Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson to lean on.  Folks will need to be assignment sound.  Stafford still has the vision and arm talent to burn high-level CBs.

Honestly thing this feels like a loss. With uncertainty of WR room on top of nobody really stepping up as pass rush opposite of Hutch.

There is so much unknown yet about team really so it could go either way in the end.

If they generate pressure the young secondary could hold on. If no pressure I see inexperience getting torched.

Just too hard to really figure out how this one goes it's just a feeling that they have to iron out some things still. Those wrinkles likely the difference in a close game.

I have legitimately zero idea what to expect. Last year I felt like we were a season away. This year I still worry we have huge holes in important areas, (specifically pass rush and WR depth). I haven't seen the 1st team play together yet. DJ Reader might not be in game shape yet. I have no idea what our revamped secondary is capable of. I have no idea what strides Jamo has taken.

I think this game is a 2 score win, but wouldn't be surprised if we got blown out.

Yikes!  It seems like the "WR issue" is getting a bit over-blown.  Our passing top options are going to be ARSB, Sam LaPorta, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs.  Then there is Kalif Raymond and company.  The depth mainly affects our 5th and 6th receiving options.  Fortunately, we have some youngsters who can fill that limited role or Tim Patrick can step up assuming he stays healthy.

As for the defense, I think folks are under-estimating the impact of Terrell Williams, Deshea Townsend and Jim O'Neil.  All of them are proven high quality coaches and are major upgrades from last year's staff, especially Terrell Williams.  Carlton Davis is a legit CB1.  Amik Roberston was playing like a borderline CB1 last year, has improved every year he has been in the league and seems like he can play inside and outside.  Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw are rookies but they have been battling ARSB and Jamo during training camp and don't necessarily have to lead the CBs right away.

To me, the big mystery is if Alim McNeill will make the jump from being a good DT to being a Quinnen Williams/Christian Wilkins level DT.  He has the right coach in Terrell Williams.  He needs to put everything together.  The complementary EDGE pass-rush is a bit of a mystery, but I suspect it will come from a combination of players.  It might be better that way.  If teams have to worry about a power-rusher in Josh Pascal, a speed rusher with James Houston and a long and powerful pass-rusher in Marcus Davenport it will make our defense harder to defend.  The LBs and safeties showed they could be effective blitzers also.

I heard they are going to have a Stafford tribute during the game. If any of you are attending this game can you chant "Jared Goff" extra loud during the tribute for me since I won't be in attendance?

I am still a big fan of Matt Stafford but doing tributes to players who are active for other teams is weird to me.  Bring him back when he retires and the crowd can appreciate him but I dont want to have to cheer for him when he is on the opposing team.

Yeah - I can appreciate that.

I'm just glad that Kelly won't be in attendance so we aren't going to have to talk about some concocted story about people saying stuff that didn't actually happen again.
