Next closest is the Broncos at 29. The Vikes have given up the fewest points in the league, have a comparable pass defense, and a far better run defense than Jax, it's hard for me to take Jax over MN. It's close though. The Jags certainly have the edge in takeaways and sacks but MN gets off the field better than anyone on third down. Our difference in points is like 7 as if it's some large difference while the pass stats are comparable? Yards, YPA, rating are all better despite the larger point differential that basically means garbage stats are coming from opposing offenses too. Also getting off the field on 3rd down is great and all but we dont need to get to 3rd down when we can force turnovers on 1st/2nd. I will say there is no question who the top-2 defenses are. Just nice to be having this discussion at all since neither team could be considered close to Top-10 not too long ago
RedRider
Both Minnesota and Jacksonville have some crazy statistics they can throw around regarding their defense. I will say: I've repeatedly seen people say that JAX has by far the best defense in the NFL, and I've seen a lot more love for JAX than MIN. But again, looking at e statistics, it's impossible to say one is the overall better defense. Minnesota: #1 in total defense (ypg) #1 in total defense (ppg) #1 in 3rd down defense (%) #1 in 20+yd runs #1 in 20+yd passes Jacksonville: #2 in total defense (ppg) #1 in QB Rate #1 in Defensive TDs #1 in sacks #2 in INTs #2 in forced fumbles

So to be 1st in points, sacks and TDs to me is more impressive than yards and the 20+ yard run/recs so that might be why people have been saying that to you. We might give up big plays but our defense clearly hasn't let it affect the points we give up. Your 26% 3rd down conversion rate is NASTY but we are also 5th there too and 3rd in yards Also Minnesota is not #1 in runs of 20+, they are in like a 6 way tie for 2nd and Jacksonville is part of that tie. TN has given up just 3 runs of 20+ You could also make the case that with our #3 ranked point differential that teams are getting more garbage stats against our defense than most as well I think alot of what you're mentioning for Minnesota are things that no one really notices when they watch them play. People see points, sacks and turnovers. No one really notices the lack of bigger players or 3rd down conversion. Shouldn't be that way but most casual fans will notice those things moreso
vikesfan89
It might have been against garbage teams, but I think it's crazy that the Vikings defense gave up 10 points the last 3 weeks. 7 against the Bengals with the backups in after teddy threw an INT and 3 on a 50 some yard field goal against the bears. Of course there was a few opportunities for field goals but they went for it on 4th down
gopherwrestler
Not getting into the argument about who is better, but I was surprised to see the Vikings never game up more than 19 points at home. In all of the games combined at home only let up 100 pts. I'm sure the Jags are close to that too, just a pretty neat stat.
3rivers
steelers run D has been a weakness as of late, and will they continue to slide? They also didn't get as many turnovers as top 5 D's probably will get, but overall we are improving IMO. How would people here rank the playoff teams?
