2024 Coaching staff and their future:

HC Sean McDermott
OC Joe Brady
DC Bobby Babich

I know most of you are ready to move on from McDermott. Between late game clock management and playoff losses, fans patient has worn thin. I’m impartial myself mainly because I don’t have faith a new HC is any guarantee and we could waste more of Allen’s career.

I think it’s becoming apparent Brady is not going to be a long term answer. I think his offense is OK, and he uses motion a lot which is great. But he has not shown an ability to change in game or have an answer for heavy pressure from the defense. Can he scheme guys open?

Bobby Babich in year 1 I think has done a great job. The defense has battled so many injuries to start the year and they’ve kept everyone in check except Derrick Henry. The Safeties are an issue and I think that is one of their biggest needs is a true difference maker back there.

So, that brings us to the end of the season. If you want McDermott gone, who is replacing him? How does that affect the personnel we’ve spent years putting into place. Does anyone get retained on staff? If like me, you think McDermott is safe barring a total collapse of a season, who knew that comes in, on staff?

I'm not 100% sure what will happen with McDermott during or after this season but if he were to leave, I hope we take a solid run at replacing him. We are an appealing team to coaches I would think nowadays due solely to having Josh as our franchise QB.

With that being said, Buffalo sports in general tends to have a habit of going with nostalgic hires which I really hope would not be the case here.

So Wes Phillips with his dad on staff or Frank Reich getting a 3rd shot as HC doesn’t appeal to you? Lol

We can’t live by the “well we don’t know if a new coach will be any better” mentality. We know what we have ain’t gonna get it done. Take the risk that someone else will.

Who that person is? I’m not quite sure yet. I’d take a few years of Bill though, I’ll tell you that. At least with him you know the in game mismanagement isn’t going to happen.

I mean I have been on this train since 13 seconds and you all know this.

But at this point it is obvious that they are not going to change this staff, Josh doesn't want too, Brandon doesn't want too, and most importantly, Terry absolutely doesn't want too. It is what it is, atp I've just accepted that our ONE shot is a miracle run where coaching basically never has to matter.

If this smelling salt thing is real I think McDermott needs to go. Putting your star QB in harms way is inexcusable. Also the NFL needs to fix these so called independent neurologists not doing their jobs. They won’t though. All about the money.

It's definitely real but unfortunately none of this is gonna change. The Tua stuff is an outlier rather than how they're ever going to treat it and the unfortunate reality is that there is nobody on that field with the incentives necessary to save Josh from himself.

Which is, unfortunately, ironic because if Trubisky is in on that series where we tied it I think we have a better chance to win the game purely because his brain wasn't pudding at that point.

I agree 100%

I just don’t think fans in general realize that firing McDermott isnt an automatic fix. It’s just as likely the next guy sucks and the one after that could too. I don’t think fans are prepared for that negative outcome and just assume a positive one no matter what.

I know many of you will want the young OC. Which is fine, if they are the best guy. Here’s a list of retreads and other potential best men for the job:

Retread:

Bill Belichick
Mike Vrabel
Brian Flores

DC:
Aaron Glenn
Ejiro Evero
Jeff Hafley
Jesse Minter

OC:
Klint Kubiak
Drew Petzing
Ben Johnson
Bobby Slowick
Kellen Moore

Trade a few firsts and get Shanny.

Or maybe McVay leaves and we can get him

It'd really need to be a scenario like this if I'm moving on from McD. I need a clear upgrade. Throwing darts at the board will more than likely lead to someone worse. I really don't trust Pegula hiring a competent coach.  Also, I doubt Pegula moves on from McD even if McVay became available.

So, I'm not thrilled with McD, but I do think he's solid. Probably in the top-10 of coaches. We can do far worse, and I do believe Allen and McD can win a SB together, though McD does leave a lot to be desired in critical moments of big games.

This is where I am at.

Winning a SB is hard. The Patriots and now Chiefs dynasty has fooled people into thinking it can be done a lot. Usually it takes a strong regular season, health in the playoffs and a bit of luck.

2020: Team wasn't healthy in the AFC Championship game and they just weren't good enough.
2021: Bad luck and coaching with Special teams blunder followed by defense playing prevent.
2022: Damar Hamlin incident. OL was brutal in the Bengals game. Got out played and what the heck was that defensive alignment?
2023: LB group and CB group were absolutely decimated by injuries. Fake punt? Terrible.

We haven't been the healthiest team, and failing to get that 1st round bye has hurt us. There have definitely been coaching blunders. I would argue we haven't had many or any bounces are way either. I'm not convinced some new coach, especially a first time coach is going to come in and fix all these issues without having any of their own.
