Was a good QB coachs for Carr on the Raiders but horrible OC the next season which lead to us hiring Jon Gruden. I wondered where he went and it looks like a lot of places.

I feel like the best way to understand Downing is to say that he called plays for a Titans team in the playoffs in a game where their opponent, the Bengals, only scored 19 points, Joe Burrow was hit 13 times and sacked 9 (losing 68 yards), and the Titans DBs had 4 PDs and an INT.  The Titans lost that game.

Step 1: Bring in Aaron Rodgers

Step 2: Rodgers won't join the team without his BFF Nathaniel Hackett

Step 3: Go around your HC to hire Hackett so you can have Rodgers

Step 4: They both suck.

Step 5: Fire your HC as a result

Step 6: Strip Hackett of playcalling duties anyways and give them to the only guy who might actually be worse

Step 7: <WE ARE HERE>

Was that on the OC or that Tannehill played horrible that game? From what I remember about the Titans playoff runs was they were afraid to let Tannehill throw. They won games the one year by just running Derrick Henry and avoiding throwing.

That was the Derrick Henry injury season.  He was back for the playoff game, and clearly not 100 percent, and they still played him like he wasn't going to miss a beat.

Which reminds me, Downing was also the OC that ran Henry into the ground.

I mean the Titans fired Downing and their offense still sucked the next season. So was it him or that the Titans literally had no talent on offense once they traded away AJ Brown.

Arthur Smith ran Derrick Henry like crazy too. He is a freak RB and is still dominating.

The Jets don't have any other options, its not like you can just go out and hire a OC during the season. You make changes on your staff. I remember Panther fans said Joe Brady was a awful OC, then he gets praised on the Bills.

Jets had to make a change. Hackett is just lost as a OC and repeating the same thing and expecting different results in insanity.

Yeah, Downing was the OC that next year.  It was a lot of everything.  Aging players, Vrabel-ball resulting in constant injuries to everyone, and the failure of the GM to hit on first round picks or the staff to develop talent, but I'm pretty sure that Downing was the worst OC in the league in 22.

And it's not like the Titans were the only organization he failed horribly in.  Raiders fans will let you know I'm sure.

I'm not saying the Jets had so many great options or anything, I just don't think that yall should expect Downing to be any upgrade over Hackett.  He's almost certainly worse.

What were his specific issues with the Raiders? because he seemed like he was hired the entire team sucked and everyone was fired. The Raiders offense sucked the next season after him too so was it all on him?  You are finding examples of bad teams that were bad after he left.

What specifically makes Downing worse than hackett? Hackett has a long line of failures. His only success was in GB where he didn't call plays.  Hackett's issues are he gets plays in too slow, even Rodgers was getting annoyed and yelling at him to hurry up. He lacks any kind of innovation, his play calling is extremely predictable and every team knows exactly what we are running. We can't run the ball at all.  These are the same things that happened in Denver.  Hackett lines the RB up 9 yards behind the LOS for a 4th and 1, calls a run play making the RB have to go 10 yards to get a first down. Just everything about how he runs a offense is awful.

So why is Downing definitely a worse coach than Hackett?

Rodgers isn’t going to run anything he doesn’t like. And if he’s forced to, he’s going to make it known somehow.

I’m not expecting much change from this. Maybe more runs for Hall/Allen.

I don't think it's definitive, necessarily, but literally every year Downing has been in charge of an NFL offense, said offense has been worse than it was the prior season. He's had two solid stints as QB coach with Stafford and Carr, and basically the entire rest of his 20+ year NFL career has been unsuccessful.
