Things like getting Carr is precisely my point.

And their ability to restructure is going no where unless the NFL makes changes to the rules. Gayle ain't anywhere close to tapping out financially unless she just wants to be done.

Should they just tank and get it over with? I certainly would.

Do they have to? Nope, not even close.

I think this is more GM than owner.  All teams have the same amount of cap space to spend from NFL revenue.   How/ when  they spend it is another story

I find this wild. I understand Kamara is still decent but this team is attroicious. They need a full rebuild.  Derek Carr ain't the guy.  They've got 1 legitimate WR, a shaky at best Offensive Line and a sad excuse for a defense.

So logically, let's tie down to a player that isn't actually going to improve the team at all.

Ownership can pay the contracts being converted to..bonuses? I forget the exact method, but it just requires them paying out of pocket and it allows them to get around the cap.

The Saints aren't nearly as bad as the people in this thread are acting like they are. Of course they struggled once they lost 3 starting interior OL, plus two backups after them, their top 2 WRs, their starting QB, all 3 LB at one point, their #2 CB, both starting safeties.

This actually frees up money in 2025, and Spotrac expects the cap to rise ~$20M. The Saints need to clear roughly $60M of cap space. If you trade Marshon, Cam Jordan retires or post 6/1 cut, Ryan Ramcyzk retires or post 6/1 cut, cut Jamaal Williams and Kalen Saunders and you're there.

You can also post 6/1 cut Derek Carr and save a butt load of money but I don't think they will. This is probably the last year the Saints will be in "cap hell" unless they decide to do a bunch of restructures on guys like Carr, Jordan, Marshon.

Plus Kamara was going to hit the Saints for nearly 5 mil anyways from restructure next year.  By resigning him, they're at least going to be getting something for the money they'll be paying and can always restructure to push the money out even further due to the extra years.

I don't expect this team to compete if I'm being honest, but keeping Kamara around to retire as a Saint in 2 years at least gives whoever is going to be the QB going forward a weapon other than Olave/Shaheed, one who has had 3 concussions as a WR and the other just had season ending surgery, that will help with their development and not just constantly failing due to a lack of options.

Ramzy is retiring, I think that's a given.  I think Jordan is on the team as long as he doesn't retire, though Marshon could be a viable trade piece and I could see Williams getting released, Saunders is 50/50 since it depends on if they want to put Shepherd/Rookie as the starters or keep him around.

I think they're going to force Jordan to retire. It's going to be "retire or we're forced to cut you" and I can't see him wanting to go play for one year on the vet minimum somewhere. He's a huge cap savings this year, they almost have to.

I think Jordan still wants to play/be involved in football.  I think they'll talk to him to see what he wants to do and probably try to talk him into retirement with a role with the team available for him so he can stick around, but I don't know if they'll cut him if he decides not to retire.  He's still a great locker room presence and mentor so he has value, just not at his contract so they might suck it up rather than just cutting him and pissing off some fans too.  They can kick some more money down the line with other players too.

This. Like, Carr is a net neutral. The pass rush isn't great. And tackle is a liability. That's it.

TE is okay. Kamara is still a dynamic RB. They have two legitimate young WRs. One of the best secondaries in the NFL when healthy. An immortal ILB who somehow is one of the best LBs in the NFL at 35.

Are the wheels gonna fall off? Oh, absolutely. But it's also a roster where, with injury luck, this team could be one of the best in the league. Reminds me of the 2021 Cardinals lol.

They were one of the best teams in the league when healthy to start the season, but they lost McCoy at the end of the Cowboys game, then lost more during the Eagles game that they had a chance to win, then lost more vs the Falcons which they also had a chance to win but also had given the Falcons some huge blunders to work with like Shaheed muffing a punt return giving them a free TD.

Now of course they look bad but they got like 11 starters on IR.
