Ivory Coast

Motivation: Beat Berlin.

Offense
Primary Formation: 11 personnel (Single Back & Shotgun formations)
Offensive Scheme:
We plan on having a more pass oriented offense this game (65-35). Most plays will feature pre-snap motion to try and read the defense, as well as lighten the box. We'll monitor how the defense prefers to cover during this game, and will make halftime adjustments, using more flood route concepts against zones and slants, rub routes and crosses against man coverage. Our tight end will spend time both in-line and split out, and we will use him to chip on the Right Tackle side if the pass rush is causing problems. The running back will primarily stay in to help pass protect, but will on occasion be a receiving option, either pre-snap motion or after the snap coming out the backfield. In addition, while 11 personnel is our primary package, we'll also feature 12 personnel to get two tight ends on at the same time, and use Engram in mis-match opportunities.

Running Game Focus:

  • Use 11 & 12 personnel to spread out the box and allow our OL to win matchups in the trench
  • Use double-teams to open holes for the backs to cut through
  • Take advantage of outside zone runs to the left side (behind Trent Williams)
  • Use pre-snap motion out the backfield to lighten the box pre-snap, both in 21 and 11 personnel
  • Don't be reckless and fight for extra yards to risk fumbling the ball, ball security first and foremost to help establish clock control

Passing Game Focus:

  • Use majority of 11 personnel to allow for mismatches with our receivers and other receiving weapons
  • Use route concepts that allow Purdy to make quick progression reads to find the open receiver (Look at primary, secondary, then other receiver targets)
  • Exploit our tight ends in coverage opportunities
  • Use our receivers YAC ability to take short catches into medium/big gains
  • Get the ball out quick to help offset offensive line pass protection, and use sliding protection and additional blockers if needed
  • Keep our backs in mostly to help pass protect, particularly paying attention to the right side
  • If the back sees the line holding up, leak out to provide a checkdown option
  • We'll utilize a variety of route concepts and see what types of coverage Berlin favor, then start running more of those concepts
  • Against more Zone we’ll utilize flood concepts against one side of the field
  • Against more Man we’ll feature slants, rub routes, and stop-and-go routes
  • Incorporate jet sweeps and passes to beat an aggressive defense
  • Take advantage of play-action to hit the intermediate and deep routes against a worn out defense

Defense
Defensive Formation:
Berlin favors three receiver sets, so we'll counter by going with a 4-2-5 nickel alignment. Payne and Joseph-Day will man the middle, with Tuttle rotating and Jordan spilling time inside as well. Garrett and Mack start on the edges, with rotations to keep them fresh all game long (Turner, Taylor). Bobby Wagner will be the middle linebacker, Drue Tranquill will be the outside/weak linebacker. Edgerrin Cooper will be on the strong side when he comes on for 2 receiver sets, displacing the nickel cornerback. AJ Terrell and Trevon Diggs will be the starting cornerback tandem, with Greg Newsome II being the nickel slot corner, and Womack III the dime slot corner. Wagner will be the linebacker in dime sets. We'll maintain a four man defensive front throughout the game. If they ever go 5 wide, we’ll play a mixture of zone coverages with 4-1-6 personnel.

Against the Pass:

  • Use man coverage against the offense primarily, trusting our players to line up and beat theirs.
  • Mixture of bump and run at the line, jams so as to slow down quick route concepts, as well as playing off the line a little (giving a cushion) on long down and distances
  • Wagner will take the primary TE, with Tranquill (Cover 2) or a safety (Cover 1) taking the primary HB.
  • Mix in zone coverages if they are taking advantage of routes to beat man and cause the quarterback to hold on the ball just a moment longer for our pass rush to win; zones will be cover 3 and cover 4 schemes in nature, while the man coverages will feature cover 1 or cover 2 over the top
  • Rotate defensive line to keep constant pressure and force mistakes
  • Collapse the pocket from the use of our elite edges and constantly pressure the quarterback, often into making bad throws
  • Take advantage of pass rush pressure to generate turnovers
  • Alternate Mack, Garrett, and Jordan inside on certain passing, as well as third and long packages while bringing Turner and Taylor off the bench for a ferocious pass rush

Against the Run:

  • The initial defender will be focused on securing and bringing the ballcarrier down to limit yards after contact; if a secondary defender reaches the ballcarrier they will try to strip the ball
  • Limit the number of stunts and twists along the defensive line, we'll rely more on winning the matchups and playing the gaps
  • Edges will contain the outside runs
  • One safety to drop down into the box pre-snap if needed
  • Constant rotation of defensive line to keep players fresh and wear down offensive line

Berlin

Overview
IC is a really good team with a numbers of guys playing at a high level.  Nothing too crazy this week, just line up and execute.

Offense
No Goedert this week, so we are going to mix and match our TEs depending on their skill sets.  Other than that, we are going to run our offense and let Stroud distribute to our playmakers.  We will frequently use a TE to chip and give Stroud a little more time against a really good IC DL.

Running Game
We are going to rotate Pollard and Dowdle more on early downs while Achane is going to be used more on third downs and in the passing game.  IC is strong up front, so we are going to run both inside and out, but we want to run inside a little more this week as we think we will have more success there.

Passing Game
Stroud will do what he does and read the defense and make smart decisions.  IC has an elite edge combo, so our TE(s) will frequently chip before releasing, especially if Myles is lined up across from Kolton.  We will use playaction and rollouts to move the pocket and allow time for routes to develop.  With no Dugger, we want to isolate and target the IC safeties as well.

3 WR – 60% - Garrett/Reed/Drake/Theo/RB – Reed will typically be in motion whether it’s a quick motion outside or longer motion across the formation.  None of our WRs will have any limits on their route trees, but at least one WR will give Stroud a deep option.  We will on occasion give a jet sweep look to Reed to challenge their linebackers to flow.  We will have a balanced run-pass ratio from this set with Stroud having the ability to change the play at the line.  Theo and Darnell will rotate evenly from this set.

2 TE – 10% - Garrett/Drake/Trautman/Darnell/Rico – We will use this set in short yardage and goalline situations with both TEs being very good blockers.  We will move both TEs to one side or another on occasion to help seal the edge.  Stroud will look to attack single coverage against the WRs here as well.

4 WR – 15% - Garrett/Drake/Doubs/Reed/RB – We will typically be out of shotgun here and will spread out the defense to get all our WRs on the field and let Stroud read and deliver.  We will use jet motion with Reed to pull their linebackers in that direction and will have a WR attacking the middle of the field behind that motion.  We will run from this set, including draws and screens, to keep the defense honest.

2 RBs – 15% - Garrett/Reed/Drake/Achane/Pollard – We are going to have 3 WRs on the field to spread out their secondary while using our two best pass-catching RBs to challenge IC in space.  They will run screens, option routes, and flare outs to get them in one-on-one situations.  We will split a RB out to pull a linebacker and run against a lighter box.  Look for Reed to run some jet sweep motions where we can either hand it off to him or run outside back the other way with a RB.

Defense
IC is healthier than they were in Week 3.  We are going to play our standard mix of Cover 1 Man and Cover 3 Zone while sprinkling in Cover 6 and Cover 2.  We want to get Winfield up into the box as much as possible to give us numbers against a potent IC rushing attack and remove IC’s playaction.  We will use more Cover 2 (both man and zone) on 3rd downs to force the underneath throw.

IC likes to, and I quote, -

Against Zone we’ll utilize flood concepts against one side of the field

Against Man we’ll feature slants, rub routes, and stop-and-go routes

So we will have our CBs move with their guy and then switch up the defense so that Purdy doesn’t know pre-snap whether it will be man or zone.

DL – Trey and Nick do their thing on the edge, we want to try to force the RT into one-on-one blocking situations.  Bonitto will serve as a DPR when one of those guys needs a break.  Quinnen will most commonly play across from Juice to force IC to help there.  Our other DTs will rotate the other spot based on circumstance.

LB – In nickel, both linebackers will key the RB.  On passing plays, the linebacker to the side the RB releases to will have the RB in man coverage while the other sits in middle zone.  We want to have our LBers be able to key on the run game to limit the effectiveness of Purdy’s play-action passing while defending the middle of the field which Purdy loves to attack.

On occasion, one of our LBers will blitz to speed up Purdy with the other having the RB in man coverage.

CB – As stated above, our CBs will follow their guy all over the field regardless of the coverage.  In nickel, Benford will follow ARSB and Deonte will follow Terry.  Witherspoon will have Addison.    In 4 WR sets, Terrion will come on for Jordyn and have the 4th WR.  In base, Deonte comes off and Zaire comes on and takes the middle zone.

S – Bynum will play deep all game and will occasionally shade to one side or the other to help against a really good WR group and force Purdy to make an additional read.  Winfield will be up in the box to help defend against the run game and have the TE in man coverage.  Winfield will drop out into his deep zone when we go Cover 2.

Berlin D is just nasty. I think both DLs are high quality, will limit the opponent running game and put the opposing QB under pressure a lot. And I think Stroud and Berlin back 7 more in such a scenario.

Berlin 23 - IC 13

I agree with most of this. I think both DLs have both QBs under pressure. I just think IC's roster is very underrated and I don't see a big talent gap that makes this game closer. Berlin is the hot team and I do think they pull this out in a nail biter of 24-21.

I think Banks gets roasted once or twice by Terry but that the Berlin D line wins out enough to stop a lot of drives.  On the opposite side I think Berlins line holds up a little bit better with the tackle duo and IC depending almost entirely on their elite edge guys for pressure.  It will win some matchups but ultimately I think Berlin just moves the ball a little bit better

Berlin 16-14

Berlins D is Nasty as @TedLavie said yes but I feel they focused a lot the game plan around stopping Kamara in both running and receiving game where as IC focused a game plan around getting pass heavy offensive that had route concepts to spread the ball to WRs. I'm obviously on an island here as the IC owner didnt even vote for them 😞 I see this as a chaotic game with big plays from both teams on both sides of the ball.

Deonte did hold Terry to 22 yards receiving and no TDs in week 2.

Of course, when they play again, watch Terry go for like 200 yards and 3 TDs.

True

A lot of that is scheme based though as the giants play a ton of off coverage and cover 3 and four zones designed to make you go on long drives.  I don't know if anyone has cracked 100 against them yet.  I think Banks runs into trouble when you have the cover 1 on.  Not a ton, but Terry is one of those guys where it just takes a step

I don't like this one. Really close. I liked how IC approached the game going pass heavy against a defense that wants to bring a safety into the box to try and stop the run, but I just don't see the Purdy-Stroud showdown going IC's way. But, to be clear, it's really close.

Ultimately, I think a strong Berlin secondary proves to be the difference (although let's not ignore Bosa). Berlin grabs a 28-21 victory here.

That's reasonable and we agree on how good Terry is.
