naptownskinsfan
Start off discussing the big decision that NYY have to make by this evening:
bigbadbuff
They are going to pick it up.
naptownskinsfan
I think so too, but the additional funds to pursue Soto over a mid 30’s pitcher who seems overdue for TJ is still a question that they need to think through. The money matches what DeGrom got from the Rangers essentially, so it’s not like it’s an overpay.
naptownskinsfan
In other news, Cody Bellinger exercised his player option, and Atlanta signed Reynaldo Lopez and Aaron Bummer to contract extensions to help their luxury cap situation for next year. CWood21
The Cardinals fire sale begins. Anyone making over $5M is probably available. Come take your scraps.
naptownskinsfan
Cole actually went back on his decision and essentially re-signed for the same contract. Weird.

An extra year at $36 million is nothing to sneeze at; that's serious cash. For Cole and Boras to renege on a seemingly strictly beneficial decision is beyond weird. It tells me that it must not have been beneficial in practice. Probably some combination of him not wanting to really leave, and the market not being favorable. If he left, he'd have to move his family for maybe a few million dollars more? Probably wasn't worth it to him. Cashman comes out of this looking really good though; like he 'beat' Boras. Boras declining an option and not testing the market doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but it’s a new off-season. Maybe he was humbled by what happened last off-season, or maybe Cole overruled him. I just didn’t see this as the outcome happening.
bigbadbuff
Very weird situation with Cole, but I’ll take it! I really hope Soto comes back to the Yanks, but I think I hope more that it doesn’t drag out until February lol. This should be wrapped up by thanksgiving

I think best case scenario, he might have gotten Jacob DeGrom money plus a little more accounting for inflation. But I don't think that package would be coming from the Yankees. If they post him and it falls under this year’s J2 class, there are not a lot of teams who can offer him a large signing bonus. The Orioles and Giants have the most remaining money in which to do that, and under that scenario, you would think the Giants would be the team to be in the hunt. Obviously, if they post him in the window of next year’s class, that changes the calculus for everyone, and gives people time to go back and rework ‘agreements’ with other players. Of course, Sasaki is going to make way more money in endorsements and such, and the signing bonus is only going to be a part of it, and likely a small part, but it bears watching. naptownskinsfan
I don’t see the lone Canadian team getting the big offer on Juan Soto.
bigbadbuff
This sport just can’t get out of its own way. NFL and NBA free agents sign within hours and the MLB gets dragged out for weeks, even months on end. Such a joke
