Griffen, Hunter, and Robison were all set to be unrestricted free agents following the 2018 season. We know Robison will likely retire when his contract is up, and we know Hunter and Griffen are going to be expensive.

Signing Griffen to an extension now, allows them to front load the deal, get Griffen his money, and then make it easier to sign Hunter in 2019.

Isn't a 6 year deal a little odd for a 29 year old?

The guaranteed money is likely going to be done after the next 2-3 years.

And given how athletic Griffen is, it's very conceivable that he'll be very effective in his mid 30s.
