TecmoSuperJoe
Found this today which was interesting to me. I've heard people say McVay has stated that he's a decoy and defenses have to account for him at all times. Still, this is a guy with the second highest salary on the entire team, and was drafted 8th overall in the 2013 draft ahead of DeAndre Hopkins and Keenan Allen. His best season to date has been 55 catches for 509 yards/8.8 YPC/3 TD's. Apparently on one of those NFL documentary shows Tavon got a new contract and Jeff Fisher said to him "Congratulations, you've earned this". Interesting. Regardless of what McVay's use of Austin, I don't see how he isn't a complete bust at this point. I know McVay didn't draft him, but can you not find a less expensive decoy down the road? Also, wasn't he replaced as a return man for Pharoh Cooper because his hands were so bad fielding the ball?
Danand
First of all, never listen to/follow Mike Lombardi. That is just wasting your time and dumbing you down.
Nabbs4u
Simple answer is Yes. There's no justification that can be made "so far" for where he was drafted. However that doesn't mean it's impossible for him to change that label in the future.

Well, I have some times by accident trusted a Rapoport tweet. Guess it happens to all of us. Tavon Austin was drafted too high by the wrong team and used the wrong way, and then still got the second contract with too much money attached to it. If he was a 2. round pick by the Saints, we would most likely talk about him in a completely different way. I think he could work well in their screen game and would be utilized both as a decoy and the gimmick player he should be.
CP3MVP
Brandin cooks is someone that “defenses have to account for at all times” yet he’s had 3 straight 1000 yard seasons
Xmad
He's a bust in every sense of the word. But somewhere down the line he's going to have a 1,000 yard season because if Kenny Britt can do it so can anyone.
Speedyg
The correct question should be "Is Tavon Austin NOT a bust to you?"
tyler735
I'm pretty sure he is the definition of the word bust. Not the worst bust ever, but certainly a bust.
ET80
Yep. He hasn't even been explosive in the return game, which is one of the reasons he was thought so highly of. He started off well in returns, but then he tailed off. His stock was inflated by the spread offense he played in during college, and his fast 40 time further clouded opinions on him. At this point, he simply has no value outside of a gimmick play or occasional carry. Not what you'd want out of the #8 pick.
Malik
over drafted and never put in a position where he could succeed.
Danger
Yes I knew he was WAY overrated when he was drafted. Should have been no higher than a 3rd round pick.
DontTazeMeBro
Yes. He can’t play his position. You have to deviate from the offense to come up with gimmicky ways to get him the ball. None of these gadget players are worth it

Austin has been a de facto starter at WR and KR for most of his career, so he's gotten plenty of opportunities. He has had to deal with a parade of quarterbacks with the Rams, but in all fairness, he was never much help to them either. He has value as a niche player, but being drafted 8th overall was a mistake. Solid kick returner, but no higher than WR4 on most teams. 3 minutes ago, DontTazeMeBro said: Yes. None of these gadget players are worth it Agree, I'm sick of teams wasting high draft picks on gadget players. Then you have to disrupt the continuity of the offense with trick plays, just to get them involved; and about 90% of the time, they don't work.
