It's doing a major disservice to Gruden to pretend that he didn't play the biggest role in that team's success. Gannon went from a journeyman to a MVP under him.

But it would be incorrect to say he built that team, which was what was said.  Hell, I don't doubt that Gruden had some major influence on bringing an aging Jerry Rice and a journeyman Charlie Garner (who had been drafted by Philly when Gruden was still there if I'm not mistaken) onto that team, but that Raiders AFC Championship team was by and large assembled by Al Davis via the draft and free agency (in particular the offense line and that All-Pro DB corps).

Eh, I think he had a major influence on how that team was built, so I don't think it is incorrect if you're saying other coaches built Super Bowl teams.

The hole 55-58 recored after his super bowl year would scare me. Unless sub .500 average is the exelence y'all are looking for.

post SB decline could largely be attributed to the fact that they just gave away 2 first round picks AND 2 second round picks as he arrived, and they didn't really have a franchise QB in place. he had to make do with brian griese, chris simms, luke mccown, bruce gradkowski, and he got them back into the playoffs with the corpse of jeff garcia

Well done, Raiders. Finally got Chucky back on the field and out of the booth. It'll be fun watching him at it again.

not a new article, but interesting insight on gruden has kept up to date and hasn't just been kicking back with his feet on the table while working his ESPN gig

dude is still very much into the game, watches as much tape as anybody, and even has continued to update his playbook regularly, despite not having been an NFL coach in some time

Read this a while back as well. He's obsessed with the sport. Anyone who thinks that football has "passed" Gruden by will be sorely mistaken.

Agreed, and there's a writer on the NFL's website who didn't do her research before writing about this issue. **** Veremeil left coaching, was mostly a college football announcer for years, and made a successful return to coaching with both the Rams and Chiefs. The AFC West is also a wide open division for the Raiders.

In a bigger perspective...Gruden was able to work with Al to build and win with the Raiders until 'the Tuck rule showed him the door. Al got 4 draft picks and money for a coach that was on the last year of his contract and he wasn't able to take any coaches from the Raiders. That team faced their former coach in the Superbowl.

Gannon was a journeyman QB who became great under Gruden. Was crushed under Tony 350+lbs Sigusa which ended that season short of the AFC champ game, next season 'Tuck' kept them from the SB, then the Grudenless Raiders LOST in the SB to the Dungyless/Gruden led Bucs. Dungy's offense wouldn't have got them into the SB. Gruden took the same players to another level. After that the team slowly declined due to a lack of a good QB and a D that was living off 'rep' as they aged.

Last season, many thought the Del Rio lead Raiders had a chance to compete with the Pats and possibily make it to the SB. Then Carr's leg gets broken and lets not forget his broken finger that had kept him in shotgun since then. This season first 2 games looking good, but the Redskins punched the TEAM in the mouth and showed how finesse we really were. Moving to Vegas, Trump vs NFL, Lynch sitting, taking field for his cousin, standing for Mexico's anthem, touching ref, Beastmode noticed more for these things than his production until the end of the season.Carr breaking his back and coming back, Del Rio holding on to Norton until season's almost lost. Irvin and Mack miss practice because of the firing, no INT's until week 9 or 10? A green OC and a HC who seemed to think last years success would just return and save the season. We were still 'in the hunt' and if Carr doesn't fumble trying for the TD in the endzone, maybe the team could have pulled it together and go into the playoffs. But WE DIDN'T!!! Gruden may not have coached in a decade but 'CHUCKY' was a legend while here and missed by many fans. His TV gig made him an international figure beyond  'coach' and now with the move to SIN CITY it'll be more 'show' than 'The Strip'

As long as Gruden is the 'overseer' and has quality assistants, then things will work out GREAT. A young top QB who plays with injuries. A Defensive MVP about to get paid...Lot's of vet talent and a lower tax incentive to lure other FA's If we are right back in the playoffs next year (as expected) then there will be a movement to be a part of it. Pats have always been the place to go, but with moving, winning and having a young star core, it will make the Raiders as good as the 'hype' above. Chuky was fired once just like other coaches but he's already proven to take a team from average to playoffs and playoffs to Super Bowl. As a Raider fan, I am a bit worried, but if nothing else it will be entertaining...

That's only 4 players....that he clames to love and are as good as this future hall a fame guy he compares him to. Johnny Manzel ring a bell at all for grudon oozing all over for the Raiders to draft.

Which QB didnt Gruden ooze over?  He loves QBs and gives all of them more credit than they deserve.  Lots of the QBs he liked are also doing quite well.  The Raiders already have a $100 mil QB, so there wont be a change in the near future at that position.  Grudens job will be to help Carr learn and grow.
