Packer Report -

Lazard, thrown into the fire a season ago, showed promise and took the necessary steps towards improvement seemingly on a weekly basis. The hope is that Funchess—one of the Packers’ free-agent acquisitions—can provide Rodgers with a strong presence over the middle of the field and St. Brown is able to form some kind of impact despite missing all of last season with an ankle injury.

St. Brown's rookie season, however, offered a case for potential growth. He had 21 catches for 328 yards, averaging 15.6 yards per reception which ranked as the highest number on the team (min. 5 catches).

“Certainly with some of the guys that we’ve had in the past, they became really good players but it took them two or three years to get there. We kind of have a few of those guys who are entering that second or third year of their career that you expect a lot of them.

“With Allen Lazard emerging, signing Devin Funchess, EQ coming back, MVS, Kumerow, we really like Malik Taylor, so we really think that we’ve got a lot of guys who are going to be pushing for playing time and production.”

The newfound shift towards emphasizing the rushing attack means the players towards the bottom of the depth chart are going to have a difficult time seeing the field outside of the top-three. This may be why the Packers viewed adding a receiver in the draft as more so of a luxury than an urgent necessity.

I could envision that if Funchess is motivated and plays to potential, and Lazard doesn't regress, the WR corps would be pretty reasonable.

We don't need a receiver, we need to run the ball more.

Aaron Jones only had 14 or more rushing attempts in 5 games last year.

His rushing totals in those 5 games?

116, 107, 154, 134, 100.

So in 5 games, Aaron Jones rushed for 611 of his 1,084 yards and had 8 of his 16 rushing touchdowns.

Jamaal Williams had double digit rushing attempts in five games last season.

59, 104, 63, 45, 41.

312 of his 460 rushing yards came in 5 games.

Run the ball more regularly.  Get in 30 rushing attempts per game out of Jones/Williams/Dillard and we don't need a receiving threat.

People keep forgetting there's more than one way to build an offense.  We're not a high flying offense anymore.

Lamar Jackson attempted under 30 passes 10 times last year.  Aaron Rodgers attempted under 30 passes only three times.

We don't need another receiver.  We've got Adams/Funchess/Lazard and MVS as a deep threat.  We can be a power football team.  We need to be a power football team.

We need to be better on 3rd down. Then we'll have more passing and rushing attempts. We simply didn't run enough offensive plays last year.

in the loss vs the Chargers, the Packers were 2/10 on 3rd down and ran only 18 plays in the first half
That's pretty anemic

Agreed, but i think the improvements we will experience from having a year under our belt will be significant. Add in the fact that our receiving corps have improved already (swap geronimo for funchess and jimmy for any warm body) and im optimistic that our third down conversions will improve a good bit.

im probably being slightly harsh on jimmy...

Peter Bukowski -  Was I the only one who noticed Gutey slip in the press conference last night Darnell Savage could play slot corner.

  • Conor O'Carroll -   I both heard it and immediately wondered who would play safety if Savage is playing in the slot Single high Amos? Josh Jackson?

Peter Bukowski -   Amos can hang in single-high. It would be fun to do with some robber coverage looks. Blitz the slot corner and have Savage come down. A lot of fun options.

Amos in single-high? No thanks. I mean, if it's something that happens during the game for a couple snaps or there are some injuries, then, sure. But not I wouldn't do it by design.

Swapping Geronimo for a cardboard box would be an improvement.

Why would Rodgers worry about 3rd down when he has two more downs to get the first?

Okay, okay, real response:

In obvious passing downs, we were terrible.  In fact, in the last two minutes of the half, Aaron Rodgers completed 53.9% of his passes for an average of 5.3 yards per attempt.  He had 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in these scenarios.  His QB rating was 57.7 in these situations.  He was the worst QB in the NFL in the final two minutes of the half.  Five of his 36 sacks came at this point of the game.

Rodgers was 61/147 on converting third down into first down.

On passes of 3 yards or less on third down, Rodgers was 8/14 which put him at 16th in the NFL.  NFC.
-Yes, 16th in the NFC on passes of 3 yards or less.

On passes between 3 and 7 yards, Rodgers converted 49.3% of his attempts.  That's good for 11th in the NFC.

On passes of 8 or more yards, Rodgers converted a respectable 29%.

This all goes back to what I have been saying since 2015.  Aaron Rodgers needs to quit being a ***** and make short passes.  There is no excuse - NONE WHATSOEVER - for a QB who is 36 years old to refuse to throw short passes fitting the offense and the situation.

This is why we need to run more.  The only way the offense is going to work the way Rodgers wants it to is if we run the ball more.  So frequently that defenses have to put 6 or 7 people in the box.  Rodgers is literally the worst ever QB in the history of quarterbacks labeled GOAT at the short passing game.  Please everybody read that again before they accuse me of something I did not say.

Out of all the quarterbacks to ever be labeled GOAT (Rodgers, Brees, Manning, Brady, Favre, Marino), Aaron Rodgers is the worst at the short passing game.

A lot of people refuse to see that even when I literally point out wide open streaking receivers, wide open backs out of the flat or dumpoff passes in situations very conducive towards taking the dumpoff, but it's the truth.

Aaron Rodgers is worst at what is easiest and that is all sorts of stupid.

Rob Demovsky -   The Packers draft picks have their jersey numbers:

10 Jordan Love
28 AJ Dillon
81 Josiah Deguara
54 Kamal Martin
76 Jon Runyan
67 Jake Hanson
72 Simon Stepaniak
36 Vernon Scott
53 Jonathan Garvin

Orders will soon be accepted at the GBP Pro Shop :)

Ross Uglem -  Quick thoughts.....

- Hope Shepherd at least got a watch from JLove
- "Dillon 28" - true Packers HOF potential
- Wish Deguara would've gone with a number in the 40s
- Phenomenal choice from Kamal Martin
- That's a starter's # for Runyan
- Mercy, Vernon Scott better be good
