This goes way beyond how Moss and Owens treated the media. Moss openly didn't give his full effort during his time as a Raider, and Owens acted like a child too often during his career. I can't believe everyone has forgotten Owens berating McNabb on the sidelines during Eagles games, or the idiotic display on the Cowboys logo when he was a Niner. Dumb behavior simply shouldn't be rewarded with a first ballot HOF selection. Nothing wrong with letting Moss and Owens wait. The length of time it takes for someone to be enshrined is irrelevant when comparing players.

Making them a first ballot HOF is about giving their career the respect that they have earned on the field. A few dumb antics does not take away from years of hard work these guys put into being undeniably the very best of their respective generation as well as beyond to being the better then the best of some prior generations.  While the time it takes for someone to be enshrined shouldn't make a big difference to us as individual fans of the game it makes a difference to them.

Enshrinement is a huge deal to these guys especially for ones that didn't win the Super Bowl this is the celebration of the enormous amount of work they put into being the best of the best. It's a special celebration that most of them want to share with the important people in their life that made such possible. While waiting  for year after year may not matter to fans to a guy in his early 40's that could mean losing  a parent or someone  else special that was important to this life accomplishment.

Sure some guys have to wait it's the nature of the way enshrinement works, if they end up waiting a year that is not a huge deal. But to those few who are so clearly far above their peers they should be shown the simple respect they deserve to not have to wait and risk losing someone they wanted to share that moment with. For the HOF voters to block Owens or  potentially Moss's entry over such petty things is becoming a disgrace to the process.

The Owens/McNabb scuffle was during one game, which was in Pittsburgh during the 2004 season. If I remember correctly, both of them mocked the incident themselves the following week after a blowout win in Dallas. The media at the time blew it way of proportion.

And the star celebration in Dallas while disrespectful to the Cowboys, wasn't disrespectful to his own teammates. Owens has been a controversial figure in his career, but holding the star incident against him is stupid to me. It was a taunting gesture, but it was one game.

You still haven't convinced me how waiting several years is disrespectful, and the dumb antics were disrespectful to the teammates, coaching staff, and teams which were paying their salaries. Lots of great players had to wait longer than they should have, we do not want a HOF which simply rubber stamps candidates based on stats. And plenty of eventual HOF players lost special people in their lives before earning induction. It's not a disgrace to the process to elect other HOF worthy players who didn't behave like children at times on the field. And if a guy in his 40s is going to fall apart over not getting elected, he has problems way beyond football.

There's not enough room to list all the antics Owens pulled during his career. Ditto for the off field distractions of a Brandon Marshall.

And I'd say as annoying as people may have perceived him to be, he was never indicted on murder charges, involved in domestic violence, sent D pics to a reporter, or had a drug problem. Yet people with that kind of baggage are in the HOF or will be.

He had disagreements with Jeff Garcia, Donovan McNabb, Tony Romo, and Andy Reid. He gave his opinion on something when asked. He's essentially getting blackballed from the HOF because of the perception that he isn't a nice person/didn't get along with every single one of his teammates and coaches. It's pretty ridiculous. Same with Tiki Barber.

you can't tell the story of the NFL without TO. plus his stats are up there with the greats.

he should be a lock

Nobody's suggesting Owens isn't a worthy TO, but let's also remember the HOF receivers before him would have also had better numbers had they played under the late 1990s and 2000s rules. The statistical gap between Owens and Moss and the others isn't a true indicator of the caliber of receiver. There's nothing wrong with letting these guys wait several years before getting elected, despite their talent, the number of distractions was a problem for those teams. And people shouldn't be giving Moss a pass for coasting during a season with the Raiders.

This idea that the HOF should induct certain players as soon as possible, and considering only stats is ridiculous to me.

except its not "only considering stats"

moss was one of the most game changing weapons the league has ever seen. i think when you combine stats with "lore" its when you have a true first ballot type guy. its why isaac bruce isn't getting that same love in this thread
