Trubisky Centered Offseason

Preface

Ryan Pace is going to be here in 2018, but Fox is finally gone. Pace drafted Trubisky and in doing so, tied his career to Trubisky's. This is the offseason that he will go out and spend what resources he can to get talent around Trubisky and develop him. Pace knows with a true franchise QB, his job becomes infinitely easier and he likely guarantees his job for the next 10 years. This is the year to drive as much talent around him as possible and to let a real HC come in and install a system for him to grow in and master. Pace came to Chicago after seeing Brees for a decade and likely had to sell ownership that he would make sure the QB he drafts would not be wasted as their investment in Jay was.

*** This is what I want to see happen, I'm not predicting Pace's moves ***

Coaching Changes

- Clean house with Fox, Loggains, and Fangio all out.

Fox is garbage, maybe a downgrade from Trestman as a HC.

Loggains - Did a wonderful Ron Turner impression this year.

Fangio - Offered to come back but he moved on elsewhere.

Rodgers - Does he do anything?

Hire

HC - John Deflippo - He will call plays and head the development of Trubisky

usa_today_10116093.0.jpg

OC - Greg Olson - A QB specialist, he helps manage the offense and works with Trubisky. He will also help manage the young players especially as Flip calls the plays.

usa-today-8605441.0.jpg

QB Coach - Todd Downing (*** IF FIRED***) - Obviously not getting an OC shot, he knows if Trubisky goes off that Olson might get an opportunity and knows he would be next in line. Gets high end money for a QB coach

c1b9efa86b4ed8096dcd62f09f9fc2c3

DC/Asst HC - Mike Pettine - Being paid more helps pull him from Nagy, he is the undisputed face for the defense

021815_pettine_576.jpg

LB coach/ Asst DC - Ken Norton Jr - We need LBs to come in and our young ones to thrive, Norton Jr has no chance at becoming a DC this year, so he focuses on coming in with a solid group to rebuild his resume. We get him simply by paying him more than other suitors.

USATSI_norton_11815.jpg

DB Coach - Donnatell gets a new deal with higher pay as a reward for his work with the defensive backs, also with a contract stipulation that if he wants to move to a DC role, Chicago cannot block the interview or job.

DONATELL.jpg

*** Insert HC, OC, and DC of your choice as you will. I believe this offseason will add playmakers that are very versatile and can fit in DeFilippo, Nagy, or McDaniels’ systems just to name a few.

Releases (Estimated $40 .4 mil cap space before releases)

Glennon - Saved $11.5 mil - Still a better QB than Fox is a Coach

McPhee - Saved $7 mil - Had one great season, then has best been known for his talk rather than his play

Sims - Saved $5.7 mil - Has not even been known for his talk.

Wheaton - Saved - $5 mil - He actually has practiced a few times.

Cooper - Saved $4.5 mil - We would have been better off with him in the sidelines.

Young - Too old and injured. It is hard to justify him getting a roster spot.

Cap Now - $78.6 million

Re-signings

Fuller - 4 years 40 mil ($24 mil guaranteed)

He has been pretty damn good for most of this season. Had some low points but overall has shown a ton of growth and was solid in the run game. In one on one matchups he was amazing vs both AJ Green and Josh Gordon. His first two years are guaranteed and if he hits a wall the dead cap isn’t bad.

Amukamara - 2 years 18 million ($10 guaranteed).

He has avoided a lot of targeting but still has not made many impact plays. I forget he is out there, and from a DB that is usually a pretty good thing. He isn’t a premier player and isn’t expected to devleop much, but he can be good enough for a year or two.

Meredith - 2nd round RFA tender - 1 year $2.74 mil (just going off 2017’s)

I actually would look to extend him early, like before the season if he is showing nearly the same speed and explosiveness as pre-surgery.  If he has a big year then you’re paying way more.

Wright - 2 years, $5 mil

Our top choice in 2017, he will be Meredith’s back up in the slot, and might get a significant amount of time if we go 4-wide or if an injury comes up, Meredith may move outside while he takes up the slot full time.

Inman - 2 years, $5 mil

He has been one of the few talents around Trubisky, but he has to prove he is worth a true long-term investment.

O’Donnell - 5 years, $12.5 mil (Roughly 10th in the league)

He has done well overall, poor coverage has been an issue more than his punting.

Cunningham - 2 years, $1.8 mil ($900K guaranteed)

Nothing special, just a guy who can do a little bit of everything and can be a returner in a pinch. He will be replaced in a year or two for a younger reserve but he can hold the reserve spot down and handle garbage time to prevent injuries to our starting duo. Maybe we get a draftable talent in UFA or a late pick shows great value. This signing prevents a pick from needing to be forced.

Sanchez - 3 years, $6 million (All guaranteed)

***This could also be a bridge for him into becoming the QB coach of the future as he may not dress for games, he is being groomed into the position and system.

He is nowhere near what you want from a starter but is a cheap back up with a ton of experience. He has also seemed like a solid mentor for those after he left the Jets. He has played in AFC Championship games and can help Trubisky in the film room. He will also mentor the other young QB that is coming in to replace him this year or next.

Unrein - 1 year, 1.5 million

I’m not a fan of his starting, but he is a blue collar guy who can make a few good plays His positive is eating up OL and freeing up the LB behind him. He has been a pleasant surprise.

DePaola - 2 years, $1.6 million

You forget about him completely, because he isn’t screwing up. That is all you want from a snapper.

Remaining Cap - 48.7 mil

Free Agents

OLB - Trent Murphy - 3 years, 24 mil ($18 mil guaranteed)  * This makes his AAV the 15th highest OLB in the NFL

trent-murphy-cowboys-week-2-660-350.jpg

Murphy was injured all of 2017, so this is a risky move but we could potentially get him for a steal if he is truly healthy. He steps in and starts opposite of Floyd, and will allow himself one more significant contract by only signing a 3 year deal. This also allows us to have some flexibility while using Floyd’s 5th year option.

NT/5T - Donatari Poe - 3 years, $18 mil ($14 mil guaranteed)

USATSI_9789412.jpg

Poe moves to the 5T like Hicks. With Hicks and Poe as the bookends to Goldman, our run defense makes a huge step forward. Bullard gets to move to a rotational 5T and a 3T in the nickel. He is as stout vs the run as Hicks and more pass rush ability in spurts than Goldman. If there is something that we learned under Lovie, when you stop the run, you get into long 3rd downs. That is the easiest down to play in the NFL for a defense, and allows your defense the highest chance of success. Poe might not be on many 3rd and longs, but he will sure as hell help us get to them. With Pettine we may run a 5-2 at times in running situations, if so he he and Hicks are the DTs while Goldman remains the NT.

OLB – Conner Barwin – 3 years, $10.5 mil

usatsi_9674894.jpg?w=1000&h=600&crop=1

Barwin is on a cheap deal with the Rams and while we want to get younger, we cannot simply force OLB picks too high if the players aren’t projected to be good enough for the spot. Barwin is a vet who plays the run and pass pretty well and he also played on the Eagles in 2016, so he is familiar with DeFilippo.

TE - Luke Wilson - 3 years, $12 mil

josh-evans-luke-wilson-nfl-jacksonville-

I wanted Burton here, but I think if Sims can get $6 million then Burton might get that as well, plus he likely want to get an undisputed starting role. With us having Shaheen that simply isn’t an option. Wilson comes in and gives us a solid 1-2 punch when in 2 TE sets.  The best part is either can be used as a move end, so we aren't pigeonholed into one or the other. We can seek mismatches based on who is lined up from them.

ILB - Navarro Bowman - 3 years, $9 mil ($6 guaranteed)

1024x1024.jpg

He is more of a run stuffer now than a total package from the small bit I saw, but he still played well in OAK. With Freeman’s suspension looming, we need someone to come in. Freeman is so cheap we keep him in case of an injury later in the season, but Bowman mans the middle for us. Hopefully this allows us to keep a number of talented players working together with experience, and he seemed to mesh well with Norton Jr before he we let go.

ILB/OLB - Pierre Louis - 3 years 9 million

20141109_seahawks_nyg_photoblog_38_0.jpg

- Physical specimen who is not a pass rusher but has upside. Physically is strikingly similar to Ryan Shazier. He would be able to take on the Acho role at minimum.

QB - Robert Griffen III - 2 years, $4 mil

rg315s-1-web.jpg

He is someone to compete with Sanchez to be the number two, nothing more. In his stint with Cleveland he played a limited number of games but accounted for 5 TDs and 3 INTs. He is not a pure passer and I expect someone like Defilippo to understand that and adjust to more rollouts, PROs and simple reads if he is forced to play. But this gives the Bears two QBs who have pretty significant NFL experience backing up Trubisky, so we do not have to force a pick there.

Remaining Cap - $18.6 mil
***This allows us to extend Goldman and Amos (if he plays like he did this year). Also this means we have cap in case someone is released we want, and still have Massie, Sitton, and Freeman coming off the books in 2019, allowing us to potentially go after 1-2 more quality free agents. Plus we may have plenty of money to rollover to 2019 as well. We are really in a great position financially.

Draft

1. CLE - QB Rosen

2. NYG - QB - Darnold

3. IND - DE Chubb

4. CLE - CB/S Fitzpatrick

5. DEN - OG Nelson

6. NYJ - HB Barkley

7. TB - CB Jackson

8. **** Bears trade 1(8) and a 4th to AZ for picks 1(15), 2(47) and their 1st rounder for 2018 ***

- AZ picks Mayfield, new HC gets his QB

15. CHI - WR Christian Kirk

Christian+Kirk.jpg

I’m in on Kirk. I have Ridley getting snatched up before and Kirk is massively explosive. He can run deep, has great feet, and I believe the most quickness of any WR in the draft, even more than Ridley. His explosiveness reminds me of Percy Harvin, even when they tried to keep a safety over him he still took the top off and with his athletic ability reminds me quite a bit of OBJ - without the attitude. He is a professional already with his care of his body and attention to detail, and is tough enough to play through pain (as we saw in the bowl game). He can jump right in to any spot, X, Y, or Z.

2a. OT Chukwuma Okorafor

636377888356676515-2-Okorafor.jpg

The guy is massive and has played LT and RT. He takes the spot and instantly upgrades the OL. Just read that he is still pretty new to football, so he might just be scratching the surface. He sure as hell doesn’t look new to the game, he moves well, uses his hands well, and looks like he hits like a truck. If Leno continues holding down the LT spot, he is a fantastic option at RT, if Leno falls off, he can move to LT and allow us to get another RT, so this move makes sense from both perspectives.

2b WR Equanimeous St. Brown

57f001920d20d.image.jpg?resize=1200,804

The QB play at Notre Dame would make any prospect’s numbers look poor, I think St. Brown has a lot of potential. He is too thin, but for his size he moves fast and runs solid routes. Get him in the weight room to get some weight to him, and allow him to break off the pres coverage when he plays the X. After the top 3 WRs go there is a run of WRs in the late first to 2nd, and St. Brown is needed to up the talent level around Trubisky. He has enough size, speed, and routerunning ability to warrant this pick, though I want the WR coach to work on how many body catches he makes. He shows good hands, but just a habit that needs to be ironed out.

4a CB Darius Phillips

Phillips_Darius.jpg

Adoree Jackson 2.0. They guy isn’t the big outside receiver but will be able to be a talents NB for years. He is a playmaker in every sense of the word. 12 career INTs with 5 going back for TDs. He forced 4 fumbles, recovered 3 and returned 1 for a TD. Has also returned 5 kickoffs for TDs and 1 punt for a TD. Finally he has been used as a gadget player due to his athleticism and has 2 receiving TDs. That is 14 career TDs, they kid simply finds a way to come up with the ball.

*** Bears trade their 5th for this year and 5th for next year to move up to the late 4th***

4b WR Antonio Callaway

AR-309259672.jpg

He is a 1st round talent but made extremely stupid choices. But at this point, he is not going to hurt you if he falls back into idiocy. He is a slighter build but if you watch him, he has a lot of speed, runs crisp routes, and is hell with the ball in his hands. Florida used him in a lot of gadget plays, jet sweeps, etc. He also is able to immediately become a great threat in the slot. No way does Pace allow the cupboards to be bare for Trubisky again.

6. CB JaMarcus King

6a18ac2274b9f9f23b8cdbb8944fab52.jpg

Aside from being easy to find on the screen due to his hair, he has been able to make interceptions in each season. He has fantastic length at 6’2” and 190 pounds, but is a bit light and needs to bulk up a bit more for the rigors of the NFL. He has been coached by Muschamp, who clearly has a good hand at developing CBs AND making sure they are physical in the run game. The big factor though is King has ball skills that make him someone to watch over the next year or two as he gets up to the strength level to play against physical WRs. Since we have the NB and outside receivers set for the next 2 years, we develop a potential replacement for Amukamara.

7 K Eddy Pineiro

IMG_1297.jpg

Him kick hard. Him kick good. Him try to fly. But him no can fly... Still kick good though.

Notes about this draft

While talking on the forums, I found I was hell-bent on an offensive mind to develop Trubisky, but if he was an 8+ year vet I would LOVE to have someone like Wilkes as the HC. So with this draft I wanted to allow DeFilippo (or the HC of your choosing) to develop the offense in the manner they want. How do you do that? Clean slates. Rookies are raw and rarely have the grasp of an NFL offense but things become a real cluster when they are learning one after another. You will never have the well oiled offense year in and year out without that chemistry being built. To get the understanding that Rodgers and Co., Brees and Co., Brady and Co. all have, you MUST all become experts in the offense. Now these young guys will learn this offense for 4 years minimum.

That being said I feel Watkins stays in STL, Landry gets WAY overpaid, etc so instead of using resources on them, why not get the defense to the most talented level you can? It is easier to plug and play on defense than a complex offense, so getting vets in you get people who can jump right into the defense, and focus the draft on building that offense your HC wants.

Offensive line - I did not cut Massie or Sitton. Sitton is still playing at a high level and Massie might be a poor starter, but he is a fantastic sqing tackle option, and I feel his weakness with speed rushers would be minimized if at G. I view him much as I did Bushrod, who might have enjoyed a better (or at least more successful) career at G rather LT. If we hit a rash of injuries, we are better covered in this mock. Leno and Okorafor are the starters, but you have Massie waiting as a swing tackle. If we are in a pinch Long and Whitehair can both play OT. Long and Sitton both start at OG, backed up by Kush and Morgan. If in preseason Massie shows he can play that better then he may get reps there, and Whitehair also can go there. At C we have Whitehair, with Kush/Grasu as the reserves (TC/preseason fight for the #2 role) and even Sitton has played there briefly. We are covered 3 deep behind the starters in any position.

WR - it is a very young group, but it is a dogfight for reps. If White cannot hang then I cut him and eat the loss. If Gentry performs better than Inman and Wright, then let one of them go. I want the rookies's spots and Meredith's spot guaranteed, but no one else. If St Brown is not performing at the level of Callaway, then we start Kirk and Callaway on the X and Z, and Meredith at the Y. Wilson and Shaheen can also move around and use their size advantage as well. I am not opposed to keeping 6 WRs on the gameday roster, I want the best WR developed for Trubisky that we can get. Rookie mistakes are going to happen, but I think having a firm rotation, especially with an OC like Olsen to go over things while Flip calls plays, can make sure that they are all on the same page.

DL - Hicks and Goldman are mostly 2 down run stuffers, Hicks is a beast regardless, Unrein is the utility piece who can back up anywhere, and Goldman and Robertson-Harris I want to rotate in, but stay as fresh as possible for nickel formations. I want them using their burst to penetrate. With the starters you can have them rotate in any fashion, so if Goldman goes down Poe moves inside and a 5T steps up.

LB - Floyd is the speedster, Murphy the power, and Barwin is a nice blend. He will get a LOT of reps, keeping people fresh. In nickel, I might slide Floyd inside (like when he was at Georgia) next to Trevathan to allow him to use his speed and attack at predetermined gaps. Murphy and Barwin can attack the outside while any two DL maintain the interior. Bowman is a 2 down run stuffer, who will rotate with DT on nickel. Freeman will be the top rotation when he gets back, which may become a starter when he is injured. Kwiatkowski will get reps and Pierre-Louis are being developed as well.

EDIT - credit to blkwdw13 for pointing out the suspension is served while still on IR, I forgot that. Getting Bowman might be overkill, but I am still holding the 3 solid starting ILBs.

DB - I kept Demps to be much of what Sanchez is, a rolemodel who helps on the sideline. We have Amos and Jackson returning for a potential career lockdown pairing at safety, Fuller is not the ideal number one but a talented player who has shown he can go heads up with the best, Amukamara is the quality (though not gamechanging) professional holding down the fort while we develop a younger guy. Phillips battles Callahan and LeBlanc for the NB spot, and I think his penchant for big plays allows him to win the spot. King is the one being groomed to compete for Amukamara's spot, and he has the build and athleticism to take hold of it when coached up.

Pineiro is basically the Baker Mayfield of kickers. He has a lot of talent, knows it, and isn't shy to let it be known. I love when a QB has the alpha personality, and think having a kicker like that is fantastic. He will help us on kickoffs and will show he has a strong enough leg to fight through the swirling winds in Soldier Field.

My only real concern is that I'm not sure Kirk or St. Brown really fit in a DeFilipo/Eagles style offense.... They seem to prefer the giant possession guys on the outside.... I think you're going to be looking more for a 6'4''+ guys like Auden Tate, Marcell Ateman, Jaleel Scott etc....  Auden Tate in particular I think would be a perfect fit for a DeFilipo/Eagles looking offense, as he's basically a more physical version of Alshon.

Also, fwiw, I'm not nearly as high on Christian Kirk as to pick him in the first... He's got talent and can move but I think his ceiling is ~picks 20-32... I'm just not seeing him creating anywhere the kind of separation that Ridley does in his draft breakdown cutups (though I don't think Ridley would really a big consideration for DeFilipo either)... and the majority of the really impressive plays that I did see for Kirk where in open field/return game, more so than at WR.  Finally, I think he's also a pure slot guy, and that's the one WR position we can actually fill right now with most of our guys.

They have a mix of sizes on the roster. Collins and Jeffery are both 6'3" and 6'4" respectively, but they also have two guys at about 6 foot and one sub 6' guy on the active roster. On the practice squad they have 6'0", 5'11", and 5'9" guys. Two terms that Flip uses frequently were "leverage" and "downfield with speed" so that is why I wanted guys who could really specialize in either of those. I think Kirk is a top 15 talent, though I may be in the minority, he is downright explosive even when everyone was keying on him. I would be very happy with Ridley as well, both have extremely high ceilings IMO. He will be able to play any WR position. Beckham isn't big but gets away from press because he is so explosive, same for Antonio Brown.

As for St Brown, he is 6'4" or 6'5" (I've seen both listed, so just have to wait for the Combine for an official measurement) so he would fit the big WR build. that is why I want him at the X, so he can use that size advantage since he would be on the line while the Y and Z are off the line. With what you're talking about you sound like a McCoy lead offense like he had in SD.  He had an affinity or tall WRs. For what it is worth, I have Ateman rated for the 2nd and am a big fan of his. You can sub him in for EQ if you want, results of the draft would be pretty similar and they would have similar roles.

great work.  Eddy Pinerio is the man

Only thing I can complain about is Bowmen.

And if we keep Freeman then we don't even need him. I forgot the suspension could be served while on IR, so that is overkill.

But I am keeping it because IDK if we will keep Freeman or his dedication to coming back.

Would there be someone else you would like to go for in FA?

I usually love these things not a fan of this one in regards to FA besides Murphy.

Samchez and Rgme are overkill bye to Sanchez and let’s add youth to the QB room. No need for Bowman who’s nothing but older and Poe isn’t a guy I would ever target. I think the Bears need to try and get younger and target explosive players that can make a difference in a game. I’m also not a fan of bringing back prince and fuller go with the young guy and find another YOUNG good CB. Once again I love reading these things as they are always well done and thoughtful I’m just not a fan of this mock.

Fair enough, but hear me out on my counterpoints.

We can't have a rookie and Trubisky alone as QBs, they are both learning the systems and would lack experience at adapting. We need one veteran, and with some of the holes we needed to fill I did not want to draft a QB. RGIII will never be a great passer but he is still an athlete who will be able to utilize that to aid the run game and give the WRs time to break away from their DBs. Sanchez is literally just a mentor, as he has been great with Trubisky from the clips/vids. All reports I have seen has shown he has been a fantastic mentor.

Bowman is older, but would be the 1st or 2nd best LB on the roster unless there is a stark dropoff. Bowman at 35 will still be better than Christian Jones, even though Jones is far younger. We saw how bad the LBs were at adjusting when Freeman and DT were out. Maybe Nick could advance a lot on the mental aspect, but ILB doesn't have many promising targets this year. Now if Freeman is back and mentally committed, scratch Bowman. But IDK if he is checking out or not.

Bullard and RRH haven't taken that step up to warrant a starting role. They are solid role-players, but unless they make a significant jump, they will be the weakness of all the starters IMO. And if you want to go young AND explosive in FA, you are looking at major contracts. I just don't see that on the DL this year. Asfar as getting a CB in FA, Butler and Johnson are going to get paid monster contracts IMO.  Most of the CBs hitting the market that are starter quality are 28 and older, or you're taking a big Cooper-sized gamble on someone like Cockrel from the Giants. I don't think he is suddenly going to be the next Bouye out of nowhere, though I have only seen a few games of the Giants'. Claiborne might be a decent pickup, but he is sporadic as well from what I have seen. I just don't see much benefit of getting a rental who will only be relearning the system. At least with passrushers, you're consistently doing the same thing - hunting the QB. I would want to take advantage of having Donatell coaching them  up.

Of course, I have no issues with any of your points. That was just my logic behind those moves. I appreciate the feedback man.
