Never thought of myself as much of a workhorse, but I might have broken 195 over the holidays and, not to brag, but I bet I can still bench the 45lb bar with a spotter. Good job as usual Chron.com And on a more serious note - losing Mecilus to a pec tear was as responsible for the tanked season as anything. Don't know enough to blame Fitz for the Mercilus injury, but pec tears are almost always a result of old-school "how much you bench" overuse/overweight strain that minor football contact finishes into a rupture. I still wanna know how the Texans let Watt do some of the ridiculous Cross-Fit crap while coming off back surgery and we lost two LBs to roid suspensions this season. At first I was intrigued by the hiring since he is familiar with the personnel but im starting to agree with @EliteTexan80, i wish we hired someone new outside the organization. btw, what was the whole point of hiring a search firm when you was going to hire a guy who has worked with the organization before? stupid. What should have been one of the most attractive gigs in football was made a joke with the "leave of absense" firing/non firing of Smith which has 2019 trainwreck written all over it no matter what happens in 2018. Who the hell is going to take a job as "the boss" with some nebulous cloud of the previous boss coming back into the building in a year and "the new guy" getting stuck in between another O'Brien/Smith power struggle. Basically, if we turn it around next year, everyone will attribute it to O'Brien getting "personnel power" and you forever become BO'Bs gopher or if they flop, Rick Smith rolls into a corner office with all his "thoughts and prayers" cards in tact and gets the pleasure of thumbing his nose at O'Briens extension. Oh yes, and the PRIMARY problem on Kirby that the hire doesn't address is our draft donut (1st round and UDFA success with nothing in the middle) and we have to rebuild with a 3rd-7th rounders and the same old college scouting staff that thought Treston Decoud, Keith Mumphrey, Reshard Cliett were NFL players, XSF was the 33rd best player, and traded UP to get Louis Nix III. I suspect our "search firm" (aka PR firm paid a consulting fee to make it look like Gaine wasn't hired before the Smith memo was released) got solid "don't bother waiting around" signals from Douglas', Caserio and Ossenfort's people, so basically we gave Gutenkunst a free meal to see if he ever wants to hire O'Brien in Green Bay, in house JRIII (Just Rooney Rule IIIrd place), and settled on a guy Rick Smith hired 4 years ago in Brian Gaine. As Dir of Pro Personnel (aka fa signings/resignings) Gaine's name is on the Osweiler aquisition and contract, Jeff Allen over Brandon Brooks foundational error, Kareem Jackson's contract, Fitz/Mallett/Hoyer/Weeden, Nate Washington/Cecil Shorts, Garrett Graham 2nd contract, Rahim Moore signing (3 years/$12 million), cutting DJ Swearinger, and poor handling of top 3 all-time Texans Andre Johnson and Arian Foster's sour endings. Sure the dude left last year in a lateral move to a team with one of the few front office's worse than the Texans, so it's possible he's just a mad genius who was stifled by Rick Smith the way BO'B is (stubbornly using Lamar Miller like he's Marshawn Lynch clearly proves he would have won Super Bowl XLIX and AJ Bouye was clearly the key to clock management) and for some reason Texans personnel guys always seem to have great reputations despite horrific results (see also our Dir of College Scouting, now Jets GM Mike Maccagnan who oversaw one of the worst 4 year stretches of 2nd-7th round picks conceivable). So, the best thing I can say about Brian Gaine is that he is NOT Rick Smith. The Bills FO could not possibly be worse than it was under the laughably unqualified and incompetent Doug Whaley (Rick Smith's protege), so Gaine has at least learned the first principle of executive success which is to follow someone who is terrible at their job. He at least knows how to sign one real safety in bringing in Micah Hyde, but then again he also signed TWO fullbacks in Tolbert and Dimarco (for $8 million no less). Totally underwhelming hire, but aside from Wade Phillips as DC, that describes every hire since I bought my PSLs in 2000. He also is much better looking than Charlie Casserly, and has clearly gotten the Rick Perry/Thomas Dimitroff "sassy glasses and $2k haircut" presidential makeover, so there's that. I suspect his introductory presser will be the first time most have ever heard him speak and the 2nd time will be next year when he welcomes the "brilliant and brave" Rick Smith back with the obligatory mentions of Watt, Hopkins, Mercilus, Clowney, D. Brown, Cushing, Jackson, W. Fuller and Watson (ps - pretty sure Kevin Johnson is the new Amobi Okoye who everyone keeps thinking is "about to turn the corner" until realizing the 4th corner he turns means he hasn't really gotten anywhere). I had hoped we would find someone outside the organization who could inject some new life into what we have going on (Joe Douglas was my favorite). This is probably the most boring hires ever and is unlikely much will change with Gaine in charge. Good point. He probably had a say in trading away Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby, and brought in guys like Kelvin Benjamin and Jordan Matthews, so he's not afraid to move bodies around. Not like any of those guys really made a dent for their teams, so...eh? If he can get value for a guy like Kevin Johnson or Kareem Jackson - I'll change my mind a bit. Seems nobody really ever believed the Texans hadn't already hired Gaine when lil Ricky got sent to the desert. The Browns have hired both Elliott Wolf & Alonzo Highsmith from the Packers FO. Watch out folks - with John Dorsey, Wolf, and Highsmith in the FO and 5 picks in the first 2 rounds, the Browns are a draft and a coaching hire away from an SI Cover proclaiming them the 2020 Super Bowl Champs. Every industry has some sort of EEO requirements and forcing teams to have an inclusive non discriminatory search for top level positions is great and I even support outreach to groups like the Fritz Pollard Alliance because the numbers of minorities in top positions is still out of whack with overall coaching and ex-player pool, but requiring that a minority candidate HAS to be interviewed devolves into tokenism and breeds resentment. There isn't a team around that has done more to support diversity in hiring than the Raiders who have hired the NFL's first black and hispanic head coaches, a black GM, drafted a black QB #1 overall, and have the first female team president, yet they have to still run some sham interviews with RB coaches so they don't get fined for preferring Gruden to Del Rio. Sorry, but David Carr is a better QB than Terrelle Pryor and Carson Palmer was better than Russell, Culpepper, and Campbell, but they didn't have to be forced to put Joe Webb or Aaron Brooks through another tryout to change QBs. Sure, when I was growing up, there were outmoded ideas about black QBs with James Harris, Doug Williams, and Warren Moon helping to break down those barriers and I think most fans just care about having the best QB and here we sit in Texas with Watson and Prescott as popular as it gets. Nothing will stoke racial fires more than quotas, yet the Rooney rule was born out of Dungy getting fired for Gruden who immediately justified the firing by winning a Super Bowl because he rebuilt an offense that could actually outscore an opponent in a playoff game. Nothing will put a damper on minority hiring like losing the ability to fire that minority hire and I think Hue Jackson, Marvin Lewis, and Rick Smith surviving objectively poor records carries some undertones and it's certainly not a stretch to say Vance Jackson's lack of experience showed, but I have the same complaint about the Vrabel hire. Tomlin deserves plenty of flack for his late game management and for running a loose ship, but I call Ivy League educated Bill O'Brien a moron all the time and thought Kubiak was far too "player-friendly" at times. The NFL invites this stuff on itself just like they can't take DOD ad dollars for fake "Salute to Service" weeks and over the top flag wrapping, and not expect athletes to eventually seek their own platform to express that it ain't all apple pie out there. The Texans made a change at General Manager after Rick Smith took a leave of absence from the team to be with his wife while she battles breast cancer.
