Dallas still running Romo offense

This is being overblown.

The offense changed radically under Dak. The only similarities are really in the progression based passing routes that all have several options based on coverage. That is some.tough *** stuff to recognize as a.young player, while it comes natural to a vet.

That part of the offense was mostly removed throughout the majority of Dak's first year and was slowly implemented more and more as it went on. This past year it was a complex series of options over and over again, as if it were Romo back there again. In that regard it was very Romo friendly.

But the play selection and concepts? Very different from Romo. Romo was not running waggles after his fifth or sixth year. Romo was not running read options and double hi/lo combinations. The offense was not identical to what Romo ran. The problem is that remained a complex series of option combinations as if 10+ year veteran Romo were back there, and that was not the case. But to say the offense was nearly the same or was the same is a very blind statement.

Now, where can they make it more friendly to Dak?

For starters - fewer options. As we saw with Wentz, for.a young QB simpler is better - limit the reads and simplify the combinations, allow him to master the easy stuff first. We saw this also with Goff, who admitted McVay was making the presnap reads and adjustments for him at the line by rushing him to the line before the headset turned off. With this team, they just gave Dak the keys to the entire nuclear arsenal and expected him to make the decisions on his own with so little experience.

While he did well all things considered, they did not afford him or the offense any favors in doing so. In this era, there is no 3 and 4, years of ups and downs as you learn to swim in the deep end from day 1. You simplify and demand.perfection from the simplicity, because that salary cap will force you into tough decisions far too soon.

Second - Provide him with weapons capable of making yardage on their own in the short passing game. When a QB has to consistently throw route combinations into deep half coverages and into brackets, its tough.enough. When you force a second year passer to do this, you are asking for trouble. Instead of fades and deep ins and comebacks, let Dak run more bubbles, short hitches, slants, flares and other routes.designed to let the receiver create yardage and draw in the coverage, opening up the deeper throws.

Third - Dont deviate from what this team does best. Be predictable, who.cares...everyone knew Emmitt was getting an isolation carry on first down and an off tackle on second down. Everyone knows Brady is throwing the flare hitch on third and 3/4/5, or throwing a corner to Gronk in the red zone. Good luck stopping it anyway. Master what you do best and stick with it. Dont get cute, dont get fancy, especially not with a sophmore passer.

The offense doesnt look the same. At all. So I dont know if I buy it. Romo never ran the ball, didnt run naked bootleg, no zone option. I feel like this is wrong.

Its not the same, you are correct. The only similarities is in the complexities of the route combos and their options based on coverage. It remained very veteran-heavy. There are quality veterans out there, like Brady and Rivers, who dont have even one option per playcall. Dak had to deal with at least two on average almost every third down.
