What Happens With Ty Montgomery?

Totally agreed. I see him as another Percy Harvin type and hey, Percey Harvin was injury prone too. We definitely should get him more involved in the return game as well. That was one of the primary reasons we drafted him in the first place. He was a special returner in college. We can have return some punts and kicks for us, give him a few carries a game and line him up in several WR spots.

Forgot about Hardin. If he only stayed healthy (and wasn’t crazy) he coulda been something special. If Ty can be comparable to him, it would be nice

I tend to think GB fans fascination with how Monty "could" be used is very much out of sync with how GB actually uses him.  Unless Monty loses some weight and takes on a Cobb-ish role out of the slot, I don't see Monty having much of a role in GB.  I don't even know what to say to the suggestion that RB is Monty's natural position.  I don't see that at all.  The difference between how Monty looks hitting the hole vs Jones or Williams is obvious.  For better or worse, I think the MM offense lacks the necessary creativity to effectively use Monty as the gadget player that he is.

The guy just can't stay healthy ... can't count on him.  He literally can't go more than a few games without getting injured.  I think you just have to look at him as a jack of all trades at rb/wr.  If they cut Cobb loose I think he'd be a slot option, but you better have someone else as well ready to go because he'll be injured at some point.

Agree with everything you say above, especially regarding the jack of all trades master of none.

In addition to his already extensive injury history, he also has the unfortunate sickle cell burden.

Just looking like a guy, without even a specified role on the team at this point.

Rumor has it he's tight as a drum so gotta wonder if he is a smaller version of Mike Neal.

I'm not a native English speaker, I don't understand what "tight" means when talking about a player. Could you elaborate please? Google search only return hits for "tight end". Thanks

Here’s my prediction:

Were rolling into the season with our big 3 at WR and Monty/Allison/Davis as the 4/5/6. I don’t see them bringing back Janis as a specialist even though I love him to death.

Cobb balls out again with a healthy Rodgers/Philbin return, but Monty works in some reps in his roll during blowouts and when we rest Cobb week 17.

The following year, Cobb gets paid HUGE as FA by the Patriots to replace Edelman after we don’t make him an offer.

Monty takes over the slot position in year 4. Plays well enough to get a second contract and locks down his roll for the next 4 years.

I'll probably get roasted, but here goes:

That he might be over-muscled to a point of reduced flexability?  That his tendons, ligaments are a little stiff naturally.  Almost like his 'at ease' posture is already a little flexed. I could blabber on but will stop there.  He seems more prone to injury because he's 'tight'.

Spot on. I've heard that plenty. His sickle cell trait won't help with staying healthy either. Just look at John Brown in ARI. I agree that 3rd down back, and KR/PR would be fine for him considering how Jones and Williams played this year.

Hopefully Jones doesn't come into the league suspended, because I'd really like to see him win that job.

Next year, is year 4 for Monty.

Two years ago when Monty made the switch, I saw him make some incredible runs. The most underrated part of his game is short yardage. Lacy would just try to blast his way through on 1-3 yard TD attempts. Monty looks for that crease and plows through when he sees it. Patience is what was the difference between him and Lacy. Did Monty lose all of that last year? I don't think so. His biggest issue is staying healthy (most of his issues are joint related not soft tissue). If he can't, then I'm afraid the team will move on.

I think he can be a very good back. His threat out of the backfield with a swing pass is enormous!

Is there anything in his game that is better than Jones or Williams?

I think his patience in the hole is better, but for speed and quickness, those other two appear to have better traits.

Catching?  Perhaps, but Rodgers doesn't hit check downs too often.  And screens are an "iffy" proposition.

Moving forward, I think he is a jack of all trades...3rd RB, 4th or 5'th WR.

I just don't know exactly what to make of him...but this I do know, athletically, he's no Percy Harvin.  Harvin was explosive.  Monty simply isn't in that league as an athlete.
