SemperFeist
Which is still more special teams, and more versatility than Wright showed. Wright is currently 5th on the depth chart. Each year he's finding himself further down the list.
Klomp
The key will be Treadwell's production. If he produces, it will force Thielen or Diggs to the slot and Wright to the bench. If he doesn't, he'll have a role because they'll keep Thielen and Diggs outside and will need a slot guy. Wright's impact will likely lower once Floyd comes back, but until then I think Treadwell's development is the biggest indicator of how much Wright will play. And Jarius Wright only got 11 catches because he was sitting behind Charles Johnson and Cordarrelle Patterson, neither of whom are on the team any longer. Throwing out last year, he's been rather reliable for his career and is a good veteran backup who, when he plays, makes plays. Is that worth $3.1M (the actual cap number) to me? Yes. It's also not like it's an exactly exorbitant number that's going to break the team if he's kept for this year. There ain't another player on the free agent market that's going to be worth the $1.5M or so that they'd save by cutting him (he'd still count $1.7M against the cap). 100% agree with this. Diggs and Treadwell both have had a little history of nagging injuries. Bring in a new WR mid year due to an injury to have to join into the groove makes no sense. Wright is by far the best option we will find. Only way you let him go is if Moritz Böhringer, Isaac Fruechte, or Cayleb Jones show something that can be sure to out-do Wright. I see a slim chance that happens.
SemperFeist
Neither Böhringer, Fruechte, or Jones have to out-do Wright. Either, or both, Coley and Adams would be the ones asked to replace him. And given their apparent special teams ability, something Wright doesn't offer, they're likely to be active on game day, and ahead of him on the depth chart as it is. gopherwrestler
We likely will carry 6 WR's on the roster Diggs Treadwell Thielen Coley Adams Wright That's the beginning of the year. Even with special teams ability, their only true ability on special teams is being a return man, which may still be up in limbo, and likely not seeing them as gunners. We have already one return specialist in Sherels who will be on the roster. We most likely will not have a need to keep 3 return men on the roster. After the next 3 preseason games and the first 4 games of the season and we will likely see a battle between Coley and Adams who will stay on the active roster if Floyd is kept and can become activated. Wright is still ahead of Coley and Adams as a receiver. Little to no doubt in my mind about that. I just have a hard time seeing them completely wipe him of the roster. What about when Floyd is suspended for the first 4 weeks and the team keeps 6 receivers? Diggs Thielen Treadwell Coley Adams Who else is Wright in competition with for that sixth spot? RpMc
Maybe they don't keep six? I think they do, but the argument could be made for them to only keep 5 and keep an extra tight end like Kyle Carter or an extra lineman or two.

Your goal is to start the same 5 offensive lineman all year. Certain teams call for schemes where certain types of players at the receiver position. The Carter situation is one where I could see where we still only keep 5 WR's on the 53 man roster. I do see it as doubtful tho. Even with 5 WR's I could see see Wright making the cut and Coley or Adams stashed on the practice squad. Only real situation then is when Floyd would come back if he gets a roster spot. In that situation at least Wright would have some playing time and hopefully would be semi productive and you look to move him somehow for about whatever you can get. Wrights contract is still stable enough to carry and if he can be productive he most likely could actually be used in a trade.

I think they go with five this year, cutting Coley once Floyd returns. Floyd and Treadwell essentially replace Patterson and Johnson. Adams was drafted to replace Wright, which I think he will because of ST value, youth, and cost.
RpMc
I was thinking more along the lines of keeping five, and cutting the extra player from another position to bring Floyd back into the fold.

That's possible. I guess I'd have to see who would be cut instead of the final WR. Id like to be strong depth wise along the OL and DL. Seems like those positions wear down the most during the season.
vike daddy
Treadwell: "Last year I was good enough, just when it was time to win at certain points in my route I just didn’t have the formula. Watching Diggs and watching Thielen, they were very technically sound and that’s why they were able to beat guys consistently and they know how to win. That was my biggest thing. I knew I could win, I just didn’t know how. I learned over the offseason and spent a lot of time just really learning how to be a true receiver instead of just relying on God-given talent and ability.” http://scout.com/nfl/vikings/Article/Minnesota-Vikings-WR-Laquon-Treadwell-The-fans-theyll-see-it-ove-106179051

So once Floyd returns they'll cut someone else, probably OL depth if they're carrying an extra to start the season.
Kparty15
I would be all for trying to trade Jarius Wright and a late pick for a decent starter at RT right about now.
