Most random **** ever and I know will never happen, but if Trevor Lawrence went and played in the XFL next year and then eventually it folded or whatever and he wanted to come to the NFL, would he be a FA? Or would he just end up in the draft when eligible or something?

He would be in the draft.  Everybody in the world has a draft eligibility day.

So he would be in the draft when he's very first eligible 3 years out, like the rule, because he'll leave but he wouldn't have to declare for it or anything. That's what I figured, but I was just randomly wondering. Trying to google this and finding other examples, that seems to be the case for whatever I've found. If you played CFB, you have to go through the draft.

Then my brain goes, if you don't sign with the team the first year, aren't you eligible to go back in? Then after two drafts, you're just a FA? I'm guessing playing pro somewhere else negates all that so if someone was drafted in the NFL and went straight to Canada, their rights would always be held by the team that drafted them first forever.

Okay, looking at Theismann, this is/was def the case. Dolphins drafted him, he went to the CFL, Dolphins traded his rights to WAS (for a first even) and then he played there.

Same thing happened to Flutie, essentially.

I was pretty sure that was the case, but didn't know if there was some crazy way he could come back as an FA after doing all that.

"Everybody in the world has a draft eligibility day. "

I'm all sorts of conflicted if this is true. Like it is, but it isn't. Rugby dudes come over and are just signed, but I guess technically at some point, they were eligible to be drafted?

Yes, that is all correct.  Teams will 100% know when he is eligible to be drafted, and he will 100% be drafted even if the XFL thrives.

Totally agree he would get taken, pretty damn high still I'm sure. I was just wondering if there was a some secret *** way he could get around having to take a rookie contract or something.

NFL . Com: Josh Gordon is back in the league again. The NFL is conditionally reinstating the New England Patriots wide receiver following his indefinite suspension, the league announced. "We are all rooting for Josh to succeed, both personally and professionally," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "Everyone shares in that hope and will continue to support him to every extent possible. But as Josh acknowledged, ultimately his success is up to him." Gordon is allowed to return to New England's facility and engage in conditioning work and individual workouts on Sunday.

Stress fracture in the right foot for Derwin James. Happened in practice yesterday. That's probably at least half the season gone for him, if not longer.

Saw that.  Really sucks.  Tracking James vs Alexander was going to be interesting just for the natural "what if" angle since GB passed on him.  Stress fractures in the foot can be very bad news for big guys that run fast,  Hopefully this isn't one of those recurring injuries that never seem to fully heal.

#Chargers S Derwin James will undergo surgery on his foot following evaluations of the stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal, sources say. He’s expected to be sidelined around three months. The surgery will be performed by noted foot and ankle specialist Robert Anderson.
