Peter King put it pretty well in this snippet: Quote The Raiders should put Brown on notice today by sending him the dreaded “five-day letter,” which every agent and knowledgeable player would absolutely dread. This letter would mean that Brown would have to return to the team by Friday and (be an adult and) play with a league-approved helmet, or he would be put on the reserve/left squad list, meaning he couldn’t play for the Raiders or any team in 2019. It’s also Belichick insurance, preventing the Patriots or some other contender figuring they can deal with the Brown headache for four or five months if it allows them to win a game or three more. I did consider urging the Raiders to just fire Brown. It just might come to that. But the five-day letter is a good starting point, because it draws a line in the sand immediately. As Mike Florio reported at Pro Football Talk, not reporting after receiving that letter would end Brown’s season and prevent the Raiders from having to pay $29.1 million future guarantees on Brown’s Oakland contract. It’s worth doing. Brown has driven the franchise to this, and he deserves this. Today is not the day to make any judgment about Brown’s mental stability or his frame of mind. He might be fine; he might be legitimately troubled in a way we don’t know. I just know the Raiders went out on a limb to acquire him from Pittsburgh, then paid him a rich contract. Since then, Brown has been beyond childish about an issue that more than 2,000 players have coped with: wearing only safety-approved helmets in accord with a $60-million initiative in 2016 to ensure that every player wear a helmet that has been approved by a joint NFL/NFLPA testing process. Every team has 63 active and practice-squad players. So 2,015 players (some of whom might be ticked off about it) will start the season wearing approved helmets. One wants to wear a non-approved—and relatively unsafe—helmet. That one is Brown. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/08/19/kyler-murray-cardinals-antonio-brown-raiders-fmia-nfl-peter-king/?cid=fmiatw

A screw that James had inserted in his foot as a freshman at Florida State bent last week and doctors determined it’s best to remove it. James is expected back in 3-4 months. Leader
Eric Dickerson join The Herd w/ Colin Cowherd discussing Cleveland Browns superstar wideout Odell Beckham Jr and how Beckham’s notorious catch versus the Dallas Cowboys in 2014 led to his career taking off. Dickerson said the catch was ‘cool’ but brought up the fact NFL receivers are now equipped with state of the art ‘sticky gloves’, that greatly assist wide receivers catching the ball in the modern NFL. Leader
Rotoworld: Patriots activated WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles) from the active/PUP list. It's not the final step in Thomas' recovery, but it's a critical one. At the very least, it means the Patriots are not expecting Thomas to miss six games. Golfman
The Cowboys extended Jaylon Smith. Interesting move given they are pretending to want to get a deal done with Zeke, Dak and Amari. They have a lot of cap space between this year and next year, but those 4 deals will eat most of it up. Please give Dak over 30 and Cooper and Zeke close to or over 20 each. Please Jerry, JUST DO IT! Shanedorf
Here's a list of things that will piss you off this season The annual "points of emphasis" decree from the owners -- > the refs https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/2019-rules-changes-and-points-of-emphasis/?utm_source=t.co&utm_medium=referral Offensive holding will be more strictly enforced this season, particularly on the back side of the run play or line of scrimmage. Referees will closely monitor play at the line of scrimmage to ensure that offensive players do not materially restrict opponents or alter the defender’s path or angle of pursuit. The Officiating Department will continue to emphasize the Use of Helmet rule adopted in 2018. * Lowering the head (not to include bracing for contact) * Initiating contact with the helmet to any part of an opponent. Contact does not have to be to an opponent’s head or neck area — lowering the head and initiating contact to an opponent’s torso, hips, and lower body, is also a foul. * Making contact on an opponent Players can be ejected for Use of Helmet fouls — and all ejections will be reviewed by senior officials in Art McNally GameDay Central in New York. The standards for ejection are, if: * The player lowers his helmet to establish a linear body posture prior to initiating and making contact with the helmet; * The player delivering the blow had an unobstructed path to his opponent * The contact was clearly avoidable Eff the NFL
