This is intriguing............

Going into the off-season....

Top RB contracts, from the top of my head.  Zeke.  Freeman.  D. Lewis.  Bell.  Johnson.  Gurley.

Zeke, thinking maybe he was re-negotiated already to free up some cap.

Freeman.  Cut.

Lewis.  Cut.

Johnson.  Traded to an imbecile.

Gurley.  Rumored to be released.

Case just keeps getting stronger about not paying running backs top dollar.

That helps us extend Jones for a reasonable cost so we can focus on extending Kenny...

I didnt think there was a case pending. It's clearly a position with a salary ceiling. The "spikes" aren't league-wide but specific to individual teams and their current roster/cap makeup.

This is now well understood and accepted.
Let's move the discussion forward and talk about how to pay a talented RB in a way that makes sense for both parties
(History has shown that "simply plug in another young one" hasn't worked out very often)

shorter deals ?
more guaranteed cash, but smaller overall salary ?
performance - based only ?
up front signing bonus followed by vet minimums ?

The problem has been identified, I'm way more interested in the solution

When?

History has shown that when you don't pay the RB, you can keep the offensive line together so that you can just plug in another guy?

Jeff Howe -  Aside from Todd Gurley, the Rams have also made Brandin Cooks available in a trade as they attempt to trim salary and restock their draft picks.

the Rams have some work to do. they paid out some huge contracts and are now probably regretting it after losing that SB.

I'd be interested in Cooks if his cap hits were closer to $10m over the next 3 years instead of $16m. That's just wayyyyy too much.

Yup. They took their shot.....got about as close as you can....and have plateaued. They were built like a short term collection of all stars. The anti-thesis of draft & develop. Now they've gotta reload somewhat. If I were a fan.....wouldnt be overly pissed.

Gurley getting hurt clearly hurt (bad sentence structure but conveys a message...)  :)
