It would be a tough pill to swallow on Wake.  Dude has been so good for so long, and was still really productive last year.  I honestly don't see him being cut at all.

You would need to cut someone else of similar value.

Even then 10 million is not a lot of money. Even less so when you consider someone like Cody Parkey is going to command 3-4 million/season.

IMO Wake could be a trade for a 4th or 5th round pick instead of cutting him.  There are plenty of teams that could use a pass rush specialist of Wakes caliber as a 2 year stop gap.

The -$18 million figure includes Landry.  There's no debating that he will either be traded or the tag will be rescinded and the Fins will collect the 3rd round compensatory pick in 2019.  He's not playing on the Fins in 2018 for $16 million.  Landry/Timmons/Thomas all gone gets enough room to sign draft picks.  James won't be brought back at $9 million, so either they save all of that or sign him to an extension that pays him much less, which would provide a bit more space for other smaller moves they want to make.

Landry is not asking for #1 money.

Based on contracts signed in the last calendar year #1 WR money is 16.2 million [Hopkins] to 17 million [Brown]

13-14.5 million is 2nd tier WR money [Devante Adams and Alshon Jeffery] who both have similar per target production over the last 4 years as Landry. So based on production 13-14 million seems about right.

Top WRs that primarily work in the slot usually make 7-7.5% of the cap when they sign their new deals. #1 WRs [Julio, A.J, Dez] make 10-11% of the cap in the years that they sign their deals.

Randall Cobb 7%

Doug Baldwin 7.5%

Now neither of those players hit the open market and had any bidding.

So based on 7.5% [177.2 cap] Landry asking for 13.3 million/season seems like a reasonable ask for a top slot guy.

I expect because of the market forces that he will likely end up north of 14/season.

Landry's friends are reporting that he is very upset at the free agent market. Supposedly, the highest offer he received from others teams was 11 mil a season average. Landry thought that he could do much better than the 12 ml a year originally offered by the Dolphins, and that wasn't the case. The Dolphins haven't recommitted to the 12 mil contract they offered late last year, so Landry is worried that he is actually going to lose money. Due to this, Landry hasn't agreed to be traded, even though there are offers on the table. What happens to Landry, is going to dictate what happens to Suh. If Landry can't be traded, the Dolphins may be forced to release a couple of players with high salaries. The Dolphins are prepared to cut Suh if needed.

Signing the tag was a no brainier for Landry.

Landry's options before signing tag

1. Play for 16 million in Miami

2. Get the deal he wants somewhere else

3. Have tag pulled and get what the market bears

Now

1. Get 16 million

2. Get the deal he wants

The worst option for him was removed.
