good or bad?

Fantastic move. It was expected that he wouldn't be back next season, but most people thought we wouldn't get anything back because the team was not going to pick up his contract option so he was going to be a free agent regardless. Getting $600k in allocation money instead of nothing is huge; that is enough to bring in a starting caliber player. By letting him go we are also clearing $2M of salary and a DP slot. With that slot and money we should be able to bring in a much more productive attacker.

Darwin is one of the most electric players in the league when he is on, but his game is based on speed and technical ability, and he is 32 years old and slowing down. He also has some effort/focus issues when things aren't going well, and he never meshed well with the other attackers this year. He was actually benched for the US Open Cup final and some other big games.

I also like bringing in Marlon Hairston. Just a backup, but he is young, domestic, cheap, and has 100+ MLS appearances.

In the middle of last season we spent $10M+ to bring in Thomas Chacon from Uraguay, who is essentially an 18 year old version of Darwin. Same position and style. Now we can use the DP slot and money that was tied up with Darwin to bring in a big time striker. That is the biggest need this offseason.

Seeing one of the local scoops guys saying that Oddorizi is considering signing his qualifying offer with the Twins. Which would be nice, because we have a lot of starting slots to fill.

It would sense, considering it's probably more than he'd get in the marketplace (from at least what I've heard) and he's guaranteed a starting spot.

Especially with this years starting pitcher FA's out there, Gerritt Cole is going to hog the money on the market, and Wheeler, MadBum, etc. Next year, if he has another year like this, he'll be the #2-3 FA SP.
