The Packers 2015 Draft

Many believe it takes at least 3 years to accurately evaluate a draft class. So what grade should the Packers’ 2015 draft class be given now that 3 years are in the books?

Round 1 Damarious Randall. The jury remains out on Randall. Good first year with a terrible ending followed by a terrible second year marked by injury. This year, after maturity/attitude issues early on, Damarious rebounded and played very well.

Round 2 Quentin Rollins. Seems like a good guy. He just lacked the speed needed to play boundary, the quickness to play the slot, and the football instincts to play anywhere. Also, injured two years running. Because Rollins was counted on to perform, other, better (former Packer) DBs are playing elsewhere. Ouch.

Round 3 Ty Montgomery. Ty is the ultimate Jack-of-all-trades, master of none. Drafted to be a WR/KR he did little in year 1 before going on IR. In year 2, he was invisible until Lacy & Starks went down and the team needed a RB. He gets credit for making the move and proving to be OK at RB in 2016. However, he lacks RB instincts and cannot take the pounding. He is behind at least 2 other RBs heading into 2018 and his pass blocking deficiencies work against him ever being a 3rd down back in Green Bay. Who knows where, assuming he is not injured yet again, he’ll play in 2018.

Round 4 Jake Ryan. “Just A Guy” Jake is OK against the run, a liability against the pass, and has already been surpassed by 2016 4th rounder Martinez. Under Dom and the previous GM the Pack obviously did not put much value on the ILB position so Ryan received considerable playing time. I predict his defensive snaps will plummet considerably in 2018 under new Defensive Coordinator Mike Pettine and that his time as (even a part-time) starter is over in Green Bay.

Round 5 Brett Hundley. After 3 years under MM’s wing and extensive playing time in 2017, Hundley has established that the other 31 teams that repeatedly passed him over during the 2015 draft were not wrong.

Round 6 Aaron Ripkowski. An average player at a position of little consequence, Rip’s playing time/contributions seem to drop precipitously in 2017. No big deal one way or the other using a 6th rounder on a pedestrian player like Rip.

Round 6 Christian Ringo. Cut.

Round 6 Kennard Backman. Cut.

You've got Matthews, Cobb, Nelson, Bulaga coming off the books this year or next, that's close to 50m. Add in that this draft class is going to require very little money (I really only see Randall, Monty, Ryan Rip as guys we might attempt to bring back) to bring back and that means this team needs to be active in FA this offseason and next.

Rollins is the only really bad pick IMO. Thinking back, I wanted the Packers to take Owa (NYG edge that was cut this year) at the time and he turned out to be an even worst bust, lol. Also liked Hunter & Clark but thought one of them would make it to our 3rd round pick. There were some good players drafted between Rollins and Montgomery though...imagine leaving that draft with Randal-David Johnson-Jamison Crowder-Jake Ryan. Would be pretty...pretty...prrreetttttyyyy good.

Brutal. Randall ended 2017 on a high note so we have some hope there but that’s it from that draft class. The only other guy would be Monty but he can never stay on the field long enough.

If Randall continues to play like he did the latter half of the season, then the 2015 draft may turn out to the equal of the 2011 draft in which Cobb shined, House was OK and the rest nada.

However, should Randall flake out and not become an asset at CB, 2015 might well turn out to be the least productive of the 13 drafts overseen by the prior GM.

I have a gut feeling neither Clay, Cobb, Nelson or Bulaga are going anywhere this coming season.  Don't ask me in 2019.  ;)

When you talk about value, this was a good draft.  People once again are neglecting the whole word and meaning of "perspective."

Randall is a starting CB that had one bad year, two good years.  He's flashed crap, he's flashed brilliance.  30th overall?  Sorry, but that's a good pick.

Rollins was literally the only bad pick in the entire draft unless you are literally stupid and think that 6th and 7th rounders are supposed to become starters regularly.

We picked 30th overall that year.  The two players picked before Randall aren't on the same team anymore after being cut or traded for nothing.  We needed a corner that year, and we got the best available corner.  We got three other starters later on in the draft and only failed on a high risk/high reward prospect in the second round.

And on Rollins, he has been hurt the last 2 years, he has shown some flashes, but time is running out. So not a terrible pick, just can't stay healthy, he hasn't had a chance to improve.

He wasn't a speed burner before and that Achilles' injury may slow him down even more.  :(

Very true, tough injury to suffer too. It has basically ended a lot of guys careers. We will see if he comes back healthy, new scheme, maybe the light comes on? Seems like a slim chance though.

At this point I can't call damarious a win but he isn't a loss. There have been worse 30th picks. Rollins sucks. Montgomery has changed positions and been hurt a lot. He is fine for a late 3rd. You can do a lot worse with a late 4th than JAG Ryan. Brett Hundley was good value but ended up sucking. Oh well, 5th round pick. Can't be upset with the 6th and 7th rounders being cut. It was a below average draft without a serious impact player. Disappointing for sure

This has to be one of the most lackluster drafts TT ever put together.

Randall has had his flashes, other than that is a bunch of guys to fill roster spots.

None have had an impact they need to have, this draft failure is part of the reason this roster currently struggles.

Kendricks in the 2nd of this years draft instead of Rollins makes this draft have some legs, wanted him even in the late first.

These results make me glad TT is on the shelf scouting where he should be.

He went 20 picks before our second rounder so you would have had to taken him at 30
