Training Camp Discussion

Notes from the 49ers camp:

CJ Beathard has put on an okay camp, and may win the job over Matt Barkley as Hoyer's backup.

Marquise Goodwin may be the best wide receiver in 49ers camp. He's destroyed the defense time and time again - not sure if that really means much given the talent of our cornerbacks, but if you're looking for a possible breakout candidate on the 49ers offense, it's probably him.

Arik Armstead has dropped about 20 pounds to play the leo position and has been pretty unblockable during training camp. His shoulder is also finally healthy after surgery and rest last year. The last two years, he's been one of the most efficient pass rushers in the NFL on a very limited and small sample size, if he can keep up that kind of on the field play for a full season, he's primed for a huge year. Again though, what he's doing is coming against an offensive line that is highly suspect, so we will see what happens during the preseason.

Joe Williams has started training camp somewhat slowly. He's had a couple of nice practices, but has been mostly underwhelming it appears and seems to being outplayed by UDFA Matt Breida. Breida has basically forced himself onto the roster at this point provided he doesn't completely tank the preseason. Kapri Bibbs, who the 49ers acquired from Denver during the draft, seems unlikely to make the roster without an injury to one of the other running backs. Carlos Hyde has looked great, and seems to be a much better fit in this scheme than predicted. There were reports that he could be a "surprise cut", but there's no way that happens. He will easily start the season as the 49ers #1 running back.

Is he looking at starting the season as wide receiver 3 or 4?

He's our primary back up for Evans and DJax on the outside. And we'll slide DJax to the slot and have him outside sometimes. And he's practiced a little bit in the slot.

But he's our fourth WR.

Also, if you’re familiar with Bort’s tone, that was classic “good joke, I’ll play it up further” tone from him.
