VCU Dynasty - NCAA Football 14

Welcome to my VCU NCAA Football Dynasty using NCAA 14.  I’ve done one of these before, you can view it here if you like:

http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=560779

So here’s my setup:

-          I’m starting with a Rookie Head Coach named Mike Rhoades (VCU’s basketball coach IRL).  So my coach will be level zero starting off.

-          I created a Cupcake roster and custom made the team’s uniforms and stadium.  My roster will be the worst in the nation year 1.

-          I’m playing on Heisman difficulty (the highest) with default sliders except speed threshold set to 20 (I like WRs to be able to outrun Lbers), 6 min quarters.

-          Starting off my team will not be in a conference.

-          I'm using Virginia's offense playbook (I like to run a pro style offense) and a 3-4 multiple defense.

-          Also I'm using rosters that should be the actual players from the 2014 season.

-          I’m going to sim the entire first season so I can have some recruits to play actual games with.

Here are my uniforms (I custom made them myself):

There’s no point in redshirting anyone this year because all of my players suck.  Oh and I didn't bother naming any of the players because I want to know which ones were from my original Cupcake roster.  So Yes, K94 is the kickers name.

Year 1 Recruiting Strategy

-          Get a QB

-          Build my Oline

-          Build my Secondary

Really in Year 1 I’ll grab talent wherever I can find it, but these are my primary focus.

Coaching Changes

-          None for VCU

Transfer Requests

-          C Tyler Fisher – 61 OVR – He’s pretty terrible but I can’t really turn down Olineman at this point.

-          ROLB S Gopre – 69 OVR – He’s undersized but can give me depth on defense.

-          FS Dae Funderburk – 70 OVR – I wasn’t able to find a FS this year, maybe he makes an impact down the road.

I accepted all 3 transfer requests.

Signing Day

VCU - #59 Overall Recruiting Class

ATH Cory Cobbs – 4 STARS (71) – 6’4” 232 lbs – 74 OVR

-          Cobbs is going to be a really good player for me, as a top 100 recruit that’s a huge get for me as a 1 star program.  He has 82 TP with 80 TA, and decent athleticism with 75 SPD, 75 AG and 85 ACC.  He will likely be my starting QB for the next 4 years.

WR Kenny Little – 4 STARS (186) – 6’0” 177 lbs – 77 OVR

-          He isn’t big or particularly fast, but Little does the little things right.  He has 78 CTH, 84 RR, 87 RLS, but only 83 SPD and 89 ACC.  He’ll be a quality possession WR.

CB Ronald Brewer – 3 STARS (354) – 6’1” 176 lbs – 72 OVR

-          My secondary was crap so anyone would help.  Brewer has 94 SPD, 82 AG and 90 ACC, with 76 MC, 84 ZC and 70 PRS.  Needs to work on his coverage skills but obviously very talented physically.  Due to my suckitude on my roster he might start as a Freshman.

ATH Eddie Miller – 3 STARS (418) – 5’10” 166 lbs – 71 OVR ( 73 OVR HB)

-          Miller is fast, with 94 SPD, 87 AG, and 87 ACC.  He’s a capable CB with 80 MC, 81 ZC, and 68 PRS.  But, he has 92 Elusiveness and 94 juke move, making me think he’d make an amazing speed RB.  I’m going to put him there and see how he does as my lead back this year.

OT Jay Davis – 3 STARS (456) – 6’3” 283 lbs – 77 OVR (79 OVR Center)

-          85 STR, 78 PB, 86 RB, 75 IB is pretty solid for an incoming rookie.  He’s undersized for an OT though, which is why I’m going to move him to Center where his run blocking skills should prove very valuable.

ATH Anthony Turner – 3 STARS (715) – 6’8” 269 lbs – 75 OVR (SO), (70 OVR LE)

-          This guy will be in my DE rotation although I’m not blown away by his 60 SPD.  He does have 89 ACC which should help.  His 78 Power Move 62 Finesse move really makes him seem more like an undersized DT.

OLB Karl Robinson – 3 STARS (763) – 6’7” 232 lbs – 66 OVR

-          Robinson is a decent athlete (88 SPD, 80 ACC) with good size.  He just needs to learn how to play the linebacker position because he’s really raw at this point.

TE Joe Gonzalez – 3 STARS (941) – 6’5” 262 lbs – 69 OVR

-          I really wanted to sign a TE early because they are hard to sign but essential to running toward the edge.  Gonzalez isn’t amazing but he has 70 Run Blocking and 78 Impact Blocking, so he should make a positive impact in the run game.

K Rashad Johnson – 3 STARS (1073) – 5’10” 189 lbs – 83 OVR

-          I recruited Johnson to be my new punter.  He has a relatively weak leg with 79 KP, but an excellent 89 KA, an accuracy is what I want with my punter to kick it keep in enemy territory.

ATH Damion Bailey – 3 STARS (1108) – 6’3” 233 lbs – 64 OVR (64 OVR MLB)

-          Bailey will likely play one of the Linebacker spots, he has 84 SPD, 77 AG and 90 ACC.  His 74 TAK and 63 PUR are subpar for a Lber though.  I might try him at one of the Safety spots if LBer doesn’t work out.

OT Melvin Francis – 3 STARS (1194) – 6’7” 315 lbs – 75 OVR

-          Francis is one of the best recruits in my entire class.  83 STR, 81 PB, 80 RB, 79 IB as a Freshman OT.  He should be a 4 year starter for me.

SS Joe Smith – 2 STARS (1640) – 6’7” 206 lbs – 76 OVR (SO)

-          He was the first recruit I signed (and I was mistaken he’s a Sophomore JUCO), Smith is a HUGE SS recruit that can lay the wood.  He has 93 Hit Power rating, meaning he’s a legit in the box SS.  His 77 SPD isn’t ideal, but he’s better than anything on my current roster and his 6’7” length can make up for some lack of speed.

OG Phillip Miller – 2 STARS (1671) – 6’5” 296 lbs – 80 OVR (JR)

-          I had trouble attracting recruits because my program sucks so much, but I needed to bolster my OLine.  In enters JUCO JR Miller with 88 STR, 80 PB, 86 RB, and 80 IB to open up my running game.  He should be a starter for the 2 years he’s here.

OG A.J. Coleman – 2 STARS (1988) – 6’5” 294 lbs – 80 (JR)

-          Not quite Miller but signed for the same reasons.  85 STR, 80 PB, 84 RB, 73 IB will fill out the other guard spot for 2 years.

OG Pat McKinney – 1 STAR (2514) – 6’3” 282 lbs – 68 OVR (JR)

-          I put no points in this guy but he signed anyways.  I need depth, so welcome aboard.  77 STR, 69 PB, 82 RB, 72 IB, he’s no way near the other two guys I signed but better than the slop I have on the roster now.

This is a solid class but not the homerun I was looking for.  15 recruits is pretty weak considering I had 25 scholarships to give out.  I did the best I could, even though I had to settle for quite a few JUCO transfers.  I'm hoping an improved win percentage helps my recruiting next year.

The Starter at TE is pretty much a match at TE with Gonzalez, so I might as well preserve a year of eligibility for him by redshirting him.  P McKinney at LG won’t start for awhile, so again might as well save a year by redshirting.  I considered redshirting RT M Francis but his Impact Block is literally like 30 higher than the current starter so I figured he could help in the run game.  He’ll start this year.  LOLB K Robinson will redshirt this year as he’s really raw.  MLB D Bailey is the same.  Those are all the redshirts this year.

Year 2 Recruiting Strategy

-          Build Defensive Line

-          Upgrade WR Position

-          Look for a FB

I need to look to upgrade the positions I couldn’t in Year 1.

Nothing like pounding on a crappy team to boost your confidence.  This game started off close but got out of hand in the second half.  In the first half they were keeping my defense off guard by running the ball a lot, but once I built a lead they abandoned the run entirely which allowed my defense to really get after their QB.  I finished the game with 6 sacks, but only one was in the first half, meaning I couldn’t really get much pressure when I needed to.  Its going to be a struggle for me defensively this year.

Sticking with the defense, Freshman DE A Turner had a big game with 3 sacks and 6 tackles for loss.  He was in their backfield all afternoon.  I didn’t think he would make this much of an impact (to be fair though I was controlling him), I expect he won’t be able to do this against better competition.  Freshman CB R Brewer had a great game too really shutting down their top WR, getting his first INT and he took a KR to the house.

My offense centered around Freshman RB E Miller, who dominated the game with 282 rushing yards and 3 TDs.  Freshman WR K Little had a good game too, but it was mostly based off of Miller’s dominance as he was basically wide open on play action plays since the defense was keying in on Miller.  My Freshman QB C Cobbs started off a little shaky having incompletions on his fist two attempts but settled down and finished with a solid day.  If Cobbs is throwing the ball a ton things are going bad for me, my offense is going to be built around the run game.

Another easy opponent this week, but these guys at least put up a fight this time.  This will likely be the last game of the season where I’m favored to win.  I struggled throwing the ball this week, which is concerning because I’m going to be facing a lot better defenses than this one.  I only completed 41% of my passes for less than 100 yards, and threw my first INT of the season.

Freshman HB E Miller carried the offense again with 226 rushing yards.  None of my receivers really made much of an impact, except for dropping a bunch of passes.  I really need to upgrade my WRing core.

On defense, Freshman DE A Turner picked up 2 more sacks, and CB R Brewer had another good game in coverage shutting down their top WR.  The computer rarely even throws his way.  Its also crazy seeing 6’7” SS J Smith running around deep, he can knock down balls other players can’t because he’s so tall.  MLB34 and SS32 had good games too.

My standard defensive set that I run in the 3-4 multiple is a weird Dime set (I run that because the CPU throws the ball so much), and the set has only 2 Down lineman, 3 Lbers (1 OLB plays with his hand in the dirt, 1 OLB and 1 MLB in coverage), 3 safeties and 3 CBs on the field.  That’s why my backup SS is able to pick up so many stats, as he’s on the field quite a bit.

Recruiting News

This could be a really good class for me.  I have a chance at a VERY highly rated recruit.  I won’t reveal more now cause I don’t want to jinx it.   No signings yet, still early.
