This was a close game until I broke away in the 4th game.  They actually took the lead with a TD on the first drive of the 2nd half.  They were attacking me deep on my right side, which has two Cupcake roster guys starting on that side (FS33 & & CB27).  FS33 actually made them pay a few times with 2 picks, but the CPU kept throwing that away and burned me deep for TDs twice.  DE A Turner had another big game with 3 more sacks, he’s been my only consistent source of pressure.  Oh also I realize now I’ve been wronging stating that he’s a Freshman, Turner is a JUCO Sophomore.

I ran all over this team again, Miller had 285 yards on the ground.  I did OK passing the ball, but I’m still not very comfortable with any of my receiving targets (they love to drop passes on 3rd down).  My offense is working for now but if I run into a team where I can’t run on them, or if I have to abandon the run because I get behind I’m going to be in trouble.  I really won this game because I controlled the ball and dominated in time of possession.

This game was close until CB R Brewer took his second KR to the house and blew the game wide open.  Troy’s defense is awful, I pretty much did whatever I wanted offensively.  Freshman RB E Miller had another huge game with 254 yards on the ground, and Freshman WR K Little had one of his best games so far with 83 yards and 2 TDs.

Defensively was a mixed bag.   Troy didn’t attempt to run the ball at all, which made defensive playcalling easy, but they also have a pretty good Oline.  DE A Turner was held without a sack for the first time this season.  He did however provide solid pressure, which led to some turnovers.  FS33 picked off another pass this game but it was definitely caused by the pressure Turner caused.  This is also the first team that threw at CB R Brewer.  He generally held his own and didn’t get beat deep, but they were able to complete a lot of passes directed his way.  He did manage to get a pick, his second on the season, but honestly I think against better teams Brewer should be playing as a #2 CB and not going up against #1 WRs.  I don’t have anyone else though so that isn’t an option.

4-0 is a great start after the 2-10 disaster that was last season.  I’m getting ready to start into the harder part of my schedule.

*MAJOR INJURY*

Freshman WR K Little broke his elbow and is out for the season.

Welcome back to reality, Illinois completely destroyed me.  I did decent job moving the ball down the field, but I fell behind and had to abandon the run, then my 3 INTs basically lost me the game.  On top of all of that, my only decent WR, Freshman K Little, broke his elbow and is out for the year.  That leaves me with crap receivers across the board for the rest of the year.

Their QB ran all over me all game long, not always with the option but just scrambling out of the pocket.  I couldn’t stop them, they didn’t punt a single time.  My Dline got pushed around all game, that’s what a real Oline is going to do to me until I recruit some better talent.

The only positive of the game is that when I was still in the game early on I was able to run the ball on them, and they have a pretty decent defense.

This one hurt, ODU is an in-state rival for me and it’s a game I could have won.  My defense has seemingly collapsed the past few weeks, I can’t stop anyone.  The common denominator is Mobile QBs, they are giving me fits.  My team just isn’t athletic to keep up with them.  ODU’s QB rushed for 126 yards and threw for 211 more.  My team has also struggled tackling lately.  Their 81% 3rd down conversion rate was killer.

I did solid on offense, Freshman RB E Miller gained another 134 rushing yards and could have had more if I didn’t have to abandon the run in the 4th quarter.  I still have no reliable receiving targets.  I had 3 dropped passes in the game, and some were in key situations.

Wow!  What a win, what an upset!  How did I win this game?  Well Iowa is a bad matchup for me.  They play a traditional pocket passer (who I typically defend better) and they don’t run that annoying no huddle offense the entire game (which allows me to make substitutions and better defensive playcalling).  Really though MLB34 was the hero of the game with two huge INTs that sealed the win.  I couldn’t get much pressure all game (I had 1 sack) but MLB34 just was playing great coverage.

Offensively I intentionally threw the ball more than I usually do, which is dangerous considering my WR situation, but I had to throw for 250 yards to get a bonus towards my visiting recruits.  The gamble paid off and didn’t hurt me.  Freshman RB E Miller carried the offense again with another great game.

*UPDATE*

I signed the following recruits this week:

Your run game is just beasting. I usually don’t have too much luck running in the first couple seasons into a 1* program. That runningback is really working out, good find for a first year recruit.

How do you like your Freshman QB so far?

You've inspired me to want to make some teams now. Last night, during the Grammy's, I sat on my couch and created a Richmond Spiders team updated for 2018. I took some liberties and guesses at who plays well, as I obviously don't know the team that well, but I think I did a solid job. Might do Davidson next.

Well yes my RB has proven to be quite productive but I think its more a product of the offensive line than just the RB.  I was able to nab two JUCO JR plug-in-play OGs that just maul in the run game, and that undersized OT that I converted to Center is a mauler in the run game as well.  Couple that with RT M Francis and a little bit of luck with LT74 progressing to a 78 OVR somehow and I have a really strong Oline for a 1star program.  Think about this, 5 of my top 8 OVR rated players on my roster are my starting 5 Olineman, and two of those 8 are my K and P.  Then consider all 5 of those starting Olineman will be back next year, TE J Gonzalez will be coming out of his Redshirt and I just signed a 2nd TE that's a blocker (who can probably play some FB) and I'd argue my running game is going to be even better next year.

My QB is solid, I wish he had a little stronger arm but he gets it done.  My WRing core is terrible though so he isn't to blame for all of my struggles.  I hope to sign 2-3 new WRs this year, and I'll have K Little coming back from injury.  Plus upgrades at the TE spot should help.  But I'm actually likely going to sign a 4 star QB prospect this year that I may have to consider as the starter next year.  Depends on how Cobbs progresses.

I honestly wonder what the sim score would have been between the teams.

you do a lot of sims. What is the biggest upset you have seen on a sim'ed game

Simming is pretty random, but typically against someone like Iowa I'd probably get beat down.  I'm not sure I can think of a biggest upset for my team on a sim,  but the game does sim some crazy losses sometimes, like #1 teams losing to unranked opponents.  Also look at how Utah State was somehow in the national title game my first year.  That's insane.
