Nikola Mirotic Traded to Pelicans (Official)

The core of the deal is Omer Asik and a future first-round pick in exchange for Mirotic. But in addition, the Pelicans will also be sending Tony Allen and Jameer Nelson to the Bulls, and receiving a second-round pick. The first-round pick the Bulls are receiving will be protected, while both Allen and Nelson are likely to be waived, according to reports.

Eh, I guess between this and the Griffin trade, Pelicans should retain the right to get crushed by one of the Warriors/Rockets in the first round.

Ugh...

I'm guessing it's probably due to restrictions on the first round pick. Think the deal still ultimately goes through, but yeah it's been shelved for now.

Pretty sure it's salary related and Niko's option next year

NO wants to make sure they'll be able to sign Boogie when Niko picks up his option next year, at least that's what I'm reading.

But it's a club option next year. So, can't they just re-sign Boogie and not pick up the option if they need the cap space?

Why even make the trade if you're not picking up the option? I have to believe they're not trading away a first round pick for a half season rental, in which they'll end up a fringe playoff team. I think it's inevitable that if they make the trade they'll be picking up Niko's option and that seems to be the issue right now.

Maybe I'm just jaded, but as evidenced by countless other Dell Demps moves, this seemed like another last ditch effort to save his job and prove to Cousins and ownership that the Pelicans could still be a playoff team this year in the absence of Cousins. Mirotic is ideally a PF, so he wouldn't start next year if Boggie re-signs and comes back healthy, in which case he becomes an added luxury off the bench (assuming we have the cap space to pick up his option). In the case that Boogie doesn't re-sign, Mirotic becomes the insurance policy and fill in starter next to AD. So, I don't think there's any rationale that dictates the Pelicans MUST pick up his option next year. Lots of if-then scenarios, imo.

Okay, this makes a lot more sense now...

For a trade to be completed, Mirotic would have to approve a deal that didn't include a guarantee on his 2018-19 salary. Chicago and New Orleans wouldn't need his permission if they elected to exercise his team option before completing the trade. So far, the Pelicans have resisted committing themselves to that $12.5 million on next season's payroll, league sources said.

If Mirotic were to approve the deal and Chicago didn't pick up the option, Mirotic would have non-Bird rights, which means the Pelicans would have to use one of their exceptions to sign him as a free agent after declining his team option. Essentially, Mirotic loses full Bird rights by granting the trade.

Taking back asik contract. How many years he got left on his deal. The protections on that pick better not be ridiculous. But now that the offer is public, maybe somebody offers some thing better

He's under contract until 2019-20, with the last year of his deal being an early termination option. However, given that it is highly unlikely that he will see anywhere near $12M on the open market, I don't see Asik exercising that option. So, barring an act of utter stupidity by Asik, if you guys do trade for him, you'll have ~$11/M of salary owed for the next two seasons.

Sheesh. What an awful signing. I wonder if he will accept a buyout.
