The difference with the Portis trade was we got one of the leagues best players in return for a guy that flat out refused to sign with us. This trade is completely unnecessary. We didn't have to do this.

Portis was good for us I really miss him . My favorite redskins runningback of all time

What about Football Outsiders? What do they think of the two quarterbacks?

  • 2017
    • DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement, higher is better)
      • Alex Smith = 1022 (9th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 402 (16th)
    • DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average, positive is better)
      • Alex Smith = 18.20% (10th)
      • Kirk Cousins = -0.40% (18th)
    • Total QBR (ESPN's stat, out of 100, higher is better)
      • Alex Smith = 61.7 (10th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 52.0 (19th)

Quick answer: "Well, Woz, looks like Alex Smith is a better QB!"
Slightly more observant answer: "Woz, why did you create a top level bullet of just one year?"

I'm so glad you asked!

  • 2016
    • DYAR
      • Alex Smith = 688 (12th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 1317 (3rd)
    • DVOA
      • Alex Smith = 9.40% (11th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 20.90% (5th)
    • Total QBR
      • Alex Smith = 66.1 (11th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 71.7 (6th)
  • 2015
    • DYAR
      • Alex Smith = 468 (15th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 1023 (7th)
    • DVOA
      • Alex Smith = 3.00% (15th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 16.9% (6th)
    • Total QBR
      • Alex Smith = 66.5 (8th)
      • Kirk Cousins = 70.1 (6th)

"Woz, are you trying to say that you shouldn't evaluate a QB by a single year and/or evaluate at least a three year sample set?"

*taps side of nose*

What is DYAR vs. DVOA? Long answer, but the short summary is (from: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb )

Quote

The simple version: DYAR means a quarterback with more total value. DVOA means a quarterback with more value per play.

The longer answers can be found at http://www.footballoutsiders.com/info/methods#dyar and http://www.footballoutsiders.com/info/methods#dvoa

Info on Total QBR can be found at http://espn.go.com/nfl/qbr and http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6833215/explaining-statistics-total-quarterback-rating

Differences between Total QBR and DVOA, per Football Outsiders:

Quote
  • Total QBR incorporates information from game charting, such as passes dropped or thrown away on purpose.
  • Total QBR splits responsibility on plays between the quarterback, his receivers, and his blockers. Drops, for example, are more on the receiver, as are yards after the catch, and some sacks are more on the offensive line than others.
  • Total QBR has a clutch factor which adds (or subtracts) value for quarterbacks who perform best (or worst) in high-leverage situations.
  • Total QBR combines passing and rushing value into one number and differentiates between scrambles and planned runs.
  • Beginning in 2016, Total QBR is now adjusted for strength of opponent. Total QBR on other stats pages (pre-2016) has not yet been updated with oppponent adjustment. (Note: We plan on updating all QB Stats pages with adjusted QBR and a qualifying minimum of 200 passes sometime in the 2018 offseason.)

If you're trying to argue that Alex Smith is a better QB than Kirk Cousins,  you need to never watch football again.

Ook so it's ok to throw espn stats but not okay to throw PFF stats.

gotcha . And I think there about the same even some anaylysts think there both similar .

idc about stats but I did post it since maybe it'd interest you guys .

I think they both have some benefits . Kirk when on fire is on fire and plays elite . Smith does a good job moving out of the pocket .

Smith has had an extremely mediocre career. He's Sam Bradford without the injuries. Teams keep trading for him for whatever reason but we'll be the ones who'll get the last laugh....that always happens....right Bruce?

You're making one year comparisons. For 2017. The SAME year where Smith had the following:

An OL

A running game with perhaps one of the most electric young RBs in the game

One of the fastest and best downhill running WRs in the game

One of the Top 3 TE's in the game.

The same year where Kirk had:

Moses as the only OL who played the entire season (and did so on two bad ankles)

Top TE didn't play.

Backup TE was barely serviceable ( I know, I had him on my fantasy team hoping he'd erupt)

No running game. And his 3rd down back on IR

His allegedly #1 WR...wasn't even close to being a #1

And his slot receiver flat out sucked.

Yeah sure. While you're at it, why don't you compare a foot race between yourself and me. Except I'll be carried half the way and you'll have 10 pound cement shoes.

With the reports that the Broncos were offering a second and Talib for Smith and the Browns were offering multiple picks with one being a second round pick it shows just how badly the redskins botched the Cousins situation. 5 years younger and better numbers, you mean to tell me we couldn't have got the Broncos second or the Browns second or their second and third? That's at least something.
