Wes' Mock V:3

Alright, I did this mock a little different than I've done with all of my others.  I did this mock based on players I think could be released by other team as well as going less toward players I specifically like and more toward players that I think fit the 'mold' of players Pittsburgh likes to take flyers on.

Roster Cuts (ufa's included)

RB Fitzgerald Toussaint
RB Stevan Ridley
WR Justin Hunter
WR Eli Rogers (injury related)
TE Xavier Grimble
LB Arthur Moats
LB Sean Spence
LB LJ Fort
DE Tyson Alaulu
DT Daniel McCullers
CB William Gay
CB Coty Sensabaugh
FS Mike Mitchell
SS Daimion Stafford
SS JJ Wilcox

Resignings
 RB Le'Veon Bell
OG Chris Hubbard

Free Agent Signings

WR Donte Moncrief -- He is young, fast, good size, and has underachieved for Indy which could keep his contract reasonable enough to take a flyer on him and replace the depth we may lose this offseason.

ILB Avery Williamson -- This past season was supposedly a make or break season for him.  While he had a decent season I would not suggest he had a season so great that it makes up for his previously not so great seasons.  With a new coach I think comes change and therefore Williamson finds himself in a new home.

DT Justin Ellis -- This I have listed as a 'one trick pony' type of signing.  Our worst phase of the defense this season was our ability to stop the run, which is what Ellis does best.

Draft Selections

R1: ILB Rashaan Evans/ Alabama -- I just couldn't get away from this pick.  If you watch his game tape (which I did today) he actually highly resembles Lawrence Timmons, which with a healthy Shazier is what our inside linebackers were missing.  I can absolutely see the Steelers making him the selection, even if they've got to trade up a few spots to do it.

*Alternative Selection*: Not really an alternative pick, more so the trade I referenced* Steelers trade up with Buffalo Bills at pick #22 and give up their 2018 1st, 2018 3rd and 2019 4th

R2:  S Justin Reid/Standford -- Obviously we need a Safety, but more so, we need one capable of playing all over the field in the sense that he can play well against both the pass and run.  I believe Reid can be that guy.

*Alternative Pick* S DeShon Elliot/Texas  -- He doesn't have the speed that some of the other Safeties have but he does well in coverage and he gets involved against the run, he doesn't shy away from playing physical.

R3:*  TE Ian Thomas/Indiana -- Thomas has room for improvement but he's a capable blocker and receiver.  Could push both McDonald and James for playing time and give us a good 3 man rotation at the position.

R5:  DE Tyquan Lewis / OSU -- More depth at Defensive End, solid player that can do a little bit of everything.  Project Potential.
R5: OG Brendan Mahon / PSU -- Capable Pass blocker, good run blocker with room for improvement.  With Munchak as our OL Coach this could be a great investment for a future replacement for Foster.

R5: (projected Compensatory pick via Timmons) NT Lowell Lotulelei / Utah -- He is, imo, limited to a run stopping Nose Tackle, which is gonna drop his stock.  As a late 5th round pick that's not a bad thing because our biggest issue up front right now is our ability to stop the run.

R7:  WR Desean Hamilton / PSU -- Pittsburgh has done a great job getting the most out of WR's, Hamilton is only going to succeed in a team of that nature.  There's no reason not to take a flyer on him should he be available.

I would be pleased with Evans and Reid/Elliot.

I don't see the Steelers parting with Alualu. He was a solid backup.

You're probably right.  I only listed him as a possible cut due to age, but really he isn't that old.  As far as Hubbard, if he is expected to get starter money, he can walk too.

Not bad I guess. Although I seriously doubt we cut Grimble, because I have no doubt we will be cutting Vance McDonald. I wouldn't mind keeping McDonald around, but at his price tag he's guaranteed to be cut. I'd honestly rather find a free agent tight end than waste a third-rounder on one.

I disagree with McDonald...started playing significantly more snaps towards end of season over James IIRC...I don’t think it’s an easy call at all.

Let me elaborate a little.

If we had a fair amount of cap space before any moves ($10-15m), I would say that I think we might keep McDonald.

However, based on projections I am seeing, we are $3m over the projected cap before any moves, and we are set to be losing alot of depth players....most of whom can be replaced easily,  but it will still cost money to replace them.   Some other cuts and restructures will be made, but that space will be made clear in an attempt to retain LeVeon, and IMO, they need to be looking to sign Boswell long term sooner rather than later.

In terms of McDonald, he is due $4.3M in 2018,.    Dude is very inconsistent from a health and hands standpoint, even if he can AT TIMES be a nice asset.     I just cant see them paying him $4.3m given where our cap figure is and what we still need on this roster.     McDonald simply isnt that valuable.   .

He stretches the field from a position that no one else on the roster can and puts pressure on the secondary cause most of the time he can’t be covered by a LB...issues with hands not withstanding.

I know if the salary cap issues and his salary but if he’s cut it’s anothee hole on the roster.

As I said in another post, I think he’s kept unless it’s a last resort type cut to get under salary cap.

I see Tuitt and at least 1 OL getting restructured or extended to create cap room.

Roster Cuts (ufa's included)

RB Fitzgerald Toussaint - -Agree
RB Stevan Ridley - -I would offer a contract. He looks like good depth
WR Justin Hunter - - I am a homer with this guy. I like him, but probably won't make it
WR Eli Rogers (injury related) - - Will be given a shot
TE Xavier Grimble - -Already signed to a contract
LB Arthur Moats - - Agree
LB Sean Spence - - Definitely not!!!!!
LB LJ Fort - - I bring him back. Only ILB on roster with any coverage ability.
DE Tyson Alaulu - - I disagree. Great back-up. Disappointed in the play-off game run stuffing, but solid reserve all season.
DT Daniel McCullers - -Disappointing, but gone .
CB William Gay - - Time to go
CB Coty Sensabaugh - -Time to go
FS Mike Mitchell - - Disappointing tenure with us. Gone!!!
SS Daimion Stafford - -Yep
SS JJ Wilcox - - I thought we had something here. Very disappointing and horrible on ST's. Guaranteed to hold!

Resignings
RB Le'Veon Bell - -Yes pay him as long as it is not QB type money. Not used in red zone. Huge weapon and blitz pick-up out of this world.
OG Chris Hubbard - - NO!!! Will be too expensive.

Free Agent Signings

WR Donte Moncrief -- He is young, fast, good size, and has underachieved for Indy which could keep his contract reasonable enough to take a flyer on him and replace the depth we may lose this offseason. - -NO. Bigger priorities than a WR and some decent guys on Practice squad to compete.  He is good, but unnecessary signing.

ILB Avery Williamson -- This past season was supposedly a make or break season for him.  While he had a decent season I would not suggest he had a season so great that it makes up for his previously not so great seasons.  With a new coach I think comes change and therefore Williamson finds himself in a new home. - -Not my first choice, but he is an upgrade to the position.

DT Justin Ellis -- This I have listed as a 'one trick pony' type of signing.  Our worst phase of the defense this season was our ability to stop the run, which is what Ellis does best. - - Great pick here and probably not too expensive. Steeler type of free agent signing. Great job! I missed this one researching myself.

- -Most think he has moved up into the top 20.

*Alternative Selection*: Not really an alternative pick, more so the trade I referenced* Steelers trade up with Buffalo Bills at pick #22 and give up their 2018 1st, 2018 3rd and 2019 4th - - Heck to the na na!!!! Unless we are drafting the next Ray Lewis or Earl Thomas. No Way!!! I would trade down and get a player like SC State's Skai Moore, whom I will be watching some tape on.

R2:  S Justin Reid/Standford -- Obviously we need a Safety, but more so, we need one capable of playing all over the field in the sense that he can play well against both the pass and run.  I believe Reid can be that guy. - -We need a Safety

- - I am happy with the law firm of McDonald, James and Grimble. Go Edge rusher here or another safety.

R5:  DE Tyquan Lewis / OSU -- More depth at Defensive End, solid player that can do a little bit of everything.  Project Potential. - - Tyson and Walton are solid reserves outside. We need a NG. I like the F/A signing to fill this void.
R5: OG Brendan Mahon / PSU -- Capable Pass blocker, good run blocker with room for improvement.  With Munchak as our OL Coach this could be a great investment for a future replacement for Foster. - - I think we need a back-up center more than a OG, but I can live with this pick.

-- See above. I would go another direction.

R7:  WR Desean Hamilton / PSU -- Pittsburgh has done a great job getting the most out of WR's, Hamilton is only going to succeed in a team of that nature.  There's no reason not to take a flyer on him should he be available. - - MEH

I like your other mock better than this one. You double dipped at a few positions (WR & NG) so it ends up being wasted picks or free agent signings. You could have doubled up at safety and ILB based on your signings and roster cuts. Based on your board and signings, you also neglected RB and I would have looked at a PR guy as well.  I do not want to see AB out there again. EVER!!!! Although the Steelers are actually horrible at drafting return specialist. I like the work you put in, but I was kinda MEH on this one.
