rolling the dice mcdowell plays football again though

Definitely.  I like his fit on the line with Chris Jones though, if he pans out it’s be lethal.

It does suck losing Morse and Conley, but Fulton and Robinson can fill their spots adequately

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES EARLY FREE AGENCY PRESS CONFERENCE:

First of all, I'd just like to remind everyone that we won the Super Bowl. Now that we have all be reminded of that glorious fact, lets look ahead to our victory lap  2018 Season.

With our lack of cap room we had to make some really tough decisions. We had to unfortunately release the longest tenured Eagle in TE Brent Celek. He will always be an Eagle for life and we are not ruling out a return, if he wants to keep playing and everything works out correctly. We also had to regrettably say goodbye to starting WR Torrey Smith, who played such a huge role in the playoffs. We really wish him well and know he will land on his feet with another team. We are also very happy for Trey Burton, Beau Allen and LeGarrett Blount who all found opportunities with other teams. All of these players played important roles in bringing the Lombardi to Philly and wish them all the best in future success.

We also had to make several trades for cap reasons this offseason. First, we traded DE Vinny Curry to the Patriots for a 4th Round pick. Vinny has be a great player and teammate, but it is a business and we feel really good about our DE rotation with Brandon Graham, Chris Long, Derek Barnett and Steven Means and thought that the opportunity to save some cap space and gain a pick made too much sense.

Perhaps one of the most difficult decisions was to trade Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles, but after several trades left us with out a day 2 pick, the opportunity to acquire 3 picks back for Nick and provide him the chance to start in Jacksonville made too much sense. We feel good about Carson Wentz's progress and his availability for week 1 and we are really high on Nate Sudfield. We will certainly still look to add to our QB room. We wish Nick all the luck in the world and he will always be a legend in this town.

Our number one priority this offseason was to keep LB Nigel Bradham. Nigel has played such a vital part on this defense in coverage, rushing the passer, against the run and as a leader. We felt we simply could not lose what he brought to this team. Unfortunately, that decision led to a sacrifice of future Hall of Famer Jason Peters  as he was dealt to the LA Rams for a 5th round pick in order to open up the cap space to keep Nigel. It was an incredibly tough decision, but the emergence of Big V at LT and Jason's age and injury status made us go in the direction of keeping Nigel.

Now on to the players we have acquired. We are tremendously excited about being able to pick up TE Luke Wilson. He is a great compliment to Zach Ertz as the #2 TE. Wth good blocking and receiving ability, we think he will be a great addition to our offense that uses 12 and 13 personal as much as any team in the league.

We are also happy to bring in WR John Brown to our WR corps. Brown is a player that always seemed to have a huge play against us and we always respected his deep speed and ability to make a huge play. That is what John will bring to our WR room. He'll be the #2 outside WR and I think can provide us with a vertical threat in the pass game.

We also traded with the Raiders for RT Vadal Alexander. He is a big mammoth tackle that will backup at the RT spot. We feel really good about the flashes he showed in Oakland and also we liked him coming out. Our tackle situation I think has a lot of flexibility depending on how the draft plays out. We have the option of moving both Lane Johnson and Vatai to either LT or RT depending on what we feel our best combination will be.

Speaking of draft, we went into the offseason with 6 picks and only 1 in the top 100. We now have 10 picks including a 1st, a 2nd, four 4ths , two 5ths a 6th and a 7th. Our situation to provide depth in the draft is now much more favorable.

The rest of the offseason we will continue to be shrewd and look to add depth especially on defense.

Again, I'd like to remind you that WE WON THE SUPER BOWL.

Time's yours.....

Chiefs after 2 Rounds of FA.

Round 1:

Bids won- NT Beau Allen, FB Anthony Sherman

Bids lost - CB Kyle Fuller, OG Justin Pugh

Trades - Dee Ford/Eric Murray for Jamison Crowder/Chase Roullier

*Thoughts.  Disappointed I wasn’t able to land Justin Pugh, he would have solidified my OL with 5 good starters for our young QB.

*Really happy about landing Beau Allen and Jamison Crowder.  Allen will fit nicely into the rotation and help shore up our run D.  Crowder is an upgrade from Albert Wilson and will help spell Tyreek Hill in punt returns.  Sherman is an excellent ST player who is also an excellent blocking FB when needed.

Round2:

Bids won- Christian Jones, Junior Galette, Patrick Omaheh, Zach Fulton

Bids lost- None

Trades- Mitch Morse/Chris Conley for Malik McDowell/C.J. Prosise

*Thoughts- Everything went according to plan this round.

Starting out with the trade, I was able ship 2 good players on the last year of rookie contracts out for players with great potential that have multiple years left on rookie deals.  McDowell was the big prize, he was likely sit behind Allen Bailey for a year as a pass rush specialist.

FA- Christian Jones, Patrick Omaheh are good competition for starting roles. Junior Galette was the guy I really wanted, he will work opposite Justin Houston along with young prospect Tanoh Kpassagnon.   Zach Fulton will be the starting C, and was really surprised to see him go for so cheap.  He filled in nicely for Mitch Morse last year through some injuries.

Low key a very solid off season for KC so far. You and I seem to be going after the same types of guys as we are the teams who started with the least amount of cap space. Beau Allen will be a really nice addition.

Tbh John Brown is not a viable #2 option, hands of stone, incredibly inconsistent.

So basically a younger Torrey Smith haha.

Really that player is the #4 option (after Alshon, Ertz and Nelson the Phoenix) on the offense but plays the #2 WR position. Really just needed a guy to take the top off the D and can make big plays for less money than I owed Torrey Smith.

At this point in the off-season, GB is really happy with how things have played out.  Missing on some UFA targets is certainly not ideal, but with the amount of cap space the was available league wide, it was bound to happen.   From here on out in UFA, filling the roster with cost efficient role specific players will be the game plan.  Certainly will continue to pursue trade options to improve the overall roster.   Current trade block is update in the league trade worksheet.

League Trade Block

If any player on the GB trade block peaks your interest, do not hesitate to send an inquiry.

Looking ahead to the draft, the GB staff and WAR ROOM feels the team is positioned to be able to stick to a best player/best value concept that has served well though the previous regime.

Los Angeles Rams Offseason Update:

Understanding that the team is officially inside super bowl contention window the goals for this offseason were to lock up our future stars and bring in quality players with playoff experience.

Last year's high scoring offense remains pretty much the same. Two main changes are at WR and LG. Gone is the underwhelming Sammy Watkins, to his place we traded for Desean Jackson. DJax had great seasons under McVay in Washington playing a very specific field stretching WR1 role, his big play deep threat should open up holes for the likes of Kupp and Woods like Watkins did at times, but mostly we are hoping McVay can once again bring the best out of Jackson. Big change in the OL, Rodger Saffold left in a trade that brought Anthony Zettel from the Lions. Saffold had a great season but the move opened up space for the Rams to bring in Jason Peters. The most consistent LT of recent years comes in to play left guard, a position change that Doug Peterson had already stated he intended to do in Philly with the future HOF. The left side of the OL now has two future HOFs, old yet reliable, neither men show any sign of slowing down.

The big changes come on defense where some big names who didn't quite fit Wade Phillips scheme left the team. Main priority of this offseason was to lock up Aaron Donald, mission accomplished as the best defensive player of the NFL has been extended for 4 years, he is joined by Michael Brockers(also extended) and the free agent acquisition of Allan Branch. Branch brings super bowl experience to the team as well as an upgrade inside the line as Branch had a lot of success when New England played out of the 3-4. All three men are versatile enough to play in multiple positions allowing Wade Phillips to create a variety of situational packages. The linebacker corp has also been completely revamped. Long time playmakers Quinn and Baron got shipped out to make cap room, Baron clearly didn't fit Wades scheme last year. Connor Barwin was also allowed to walk. Matt Longacre a young standout from last year will battle Eli Harold for a starting spot at ROLB. Longacre was a bit of a sack machine and should develop, Harold showed a lot of potential when playing out of the 3-4 but struggled last year in the 4-3, he has a cheap one year deal to prove he belongs on the team. Anthony Zettel played mostly out of left end in Detroit where he led the team in QB pressures in 2016, a great compliment to Ansah, we are hoping he can play a similar supportive role to Donald. Zettel has all the skills to become one of the leagues primary pass rushers in Wade Phillips defense out of the OLB position. Also brought in Avery Williams to play next to Ogletree at ILB, Williams consolidated himself as one of the best line backers in the league against the run game last year, a clear weakness in the Rams game, Williams is a clear upgrade from Baron. Another goal of the offseason Lamarcus Joyner got extended and the Rams have a young talented safety pair to develop for years to come. Aquib Talib is another player with super bowl experience brought in, Talib also had his best years under Wade in Denver. Terrence Mitchel was brought in on a cheap contract to play opposite Talib, a talented, hard hitting corner with great hands, he's not quite Trumaine Johnson, but cost the team about 15 times less than Trumaine would have, he's still young enough to develop under Phillips. NRC also got resigned, an important part of last year's defense NRC is one of the best nickel corners in the league and a great safety net.

Granted a couple of mistakes reading the cap implications of the Desean Jackson and Jason Peters trades put us a little shorter in cap room than we would have liked, I am confident this team would be one of the top contenders of the NFC in 2018.

Carolina Panthers plan entering this offseason was to add pieces to fill some holes in FA.

Offense:

WR -- adding an outside deep threat (Norv Turners as most of you may know is our new OC. He loves his WR's to be burners but at the same time he like sure handed WR's.)

TE -- A solid #2 TE behind or on the outside of Olsen. Last year killed us when Greg Olsen went down to injury.

OC -- depth/competition - Ryan Kalil missed last year to injury, we we look to see for a replacement or a backup to Tyler Larsen.

Defense:

DL -- rebuild the pass rush, our pass rush did good last year but this is the to overhaul and get younger.

LB -- Look who is out on the market that can help the team. Starter/depth

S -- Look to get younger in the backfield. (same as DE)

Trade (1)

Carolina's first move was with the Dolphins. We acquired OLB Stephone Anthony that was injuried most of last season on two different teams. This is great move for us as he adds depth to both OLB's spots. Plus he finally gets to play with one of the Top Def in the league.

Trade (2)

Panthers next move was with the Ravens. We acquired Za'Darius Smith in exchange for a backup OG. Smith has been playing good the past few seaon, Carolina will move him to DE which he should have problems doing (first step of youth movement).

Trade (3)

Trade #3 was just to add Turner another burner at WR and TE for depth (He loves his TE's)

Trade (4)

Carolina added former 2017 1st round pick OLB Reuben Foster from the 49ers. Carolina was completely not looking for this trade, it fell into our laps. Foster will begin the 2018 season more than likely on a 4 game Susp.

Trade (5)

The Panthers were able to get DE- Preston Smith and Su'a Cravens in a trade with WAS. Smith will begin the 2018 as our RDE starter and we have hopes that Cravens will become the player he once was. The move also sent 2 Vet players from Carolinas team in Ryan Kalil and Thomas Davis. Davis was expanable after the trade for Foster.

Trade (6)

Carolina added their true #1 WR by adding Dez Bryant from the Cowboys. Trade #6 was like #4 it fell in our laps.

Transactions

Contract restructure for 0272 - Cam Newton - QB.  Added $9.0m in cap space for 2018.

Contract restructure for 1199 - Luke Kuechly - ILB.  Added $5.1m in cap space in 2018.

Round 1 UFA

        TE- Tyler Eifert 6 years $52M w $5M SB

        K- Graham Gano 4 years $22m w $2m SB

        Missed on Star Lotulelei (outbid)

        Missed on Teddy Bridgewater (outbid)

Round 2 UFA

DE- Julius Peppers 1 year $1.5m w $2m SB (reserve bid)

Round 3 UFA

The Arizona Cardinals came into this offseason with a pretty bare offense. Outside of Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson, there's so many question marks on that offense. JJ Nelson still can provide a deep threat, but there isn't a viable #2 option on the team. Ricky Seals-Jones flashed at tight end last year, but is he going to be the tight end of the future. The offensive line has been decimated with injuries the past few years, so certainly depth and quality players is something needed. The biggest hole on the offensive line was undoubtedly right guard. Evan Boehm had manned the position last year, he flashed both good and bad but never had consistent play and was eventually taken over by Alex Boone and Earl Watford. Josh Kline has been signed on for years to come now. The 28 year old signed on for the next five seasons. We anticipate him being a rock on our offensive line as we restructure it a little bit. DJ Humphries and Mike Iupati at full health returning next year should strengthen the left side of that line, and we will still be on the lookout to potentially add someone to build a strong offensive line. Cameron Fleming was option #1 to do this, but unfortunately I do not have the funds to make him one of the highest paid RTs in the league

Elephant in the room, I have no QBs. I am exploring my options but not entirely willing to break the bank for one.

On the defensive side of the ball, I think you are hard pressed to find very many holes on our defense. Frostee Rucker was re-signed as he has been one of the more underrated players in the league recently, and a leader on our defense. There are a few depth issues. I would like to adding another ILB may work to our favor, but we do not want to keep Hasaan Reddick out of the mix here by overpaying for a veteran. CB2 is the biggest hole on this defense, we have a lot of money put into our secondary already, so we were hoping to find a bargain for a player like Kyle Fuller who was given a sizeable contract.

My, my, my the moves that have been made since this post. Let's start up with the top of the depth chart with QB. We came into this offseason with exactly zero QBs, and right now we have found a starter for a very reasonable price. We were able to add Tyrod Taylor to our squad for only a 5th round selection. He's not the name that will jump off the page for you, but he is definitely someone who can get the job done and perform at a high level. We've stated that our offense will run around David Johnson, and we're going to be looking less to the deep ball than we have under Bruce Arians. Mike McCoy is going to revamp the offense to feature what we have. What we have is an outstanding running back, and one of the best receivers to play the game. We feel that Taylor will fit in well to highlight their skillsets.

In addition to Taylor we continued to revamp the starting offensive line, we have added veteran right tackle Zach Strief to slot in right next to Josh Kline. Strief is not a flashy name by any means, however he will get the job done. After all, he will be replacing Jared Veldheer who struggled mightily last year. The offensive line we have assembled of Humphries-Iupati-Shipley-Kline-Strief should be a massive improvement from what we had last year. It may not be the best line in the league, but a jump from bottom 5 offensive line to middle of the pack would certainly be a step in the right direction. We were also able to add veteran tight end Ed Dickson to the offense. While we are very excited about the potential that Ricky Seals-Jones has, we have to understand that he is still very raw. Adding Dickson to the fold gives us a great and proven 1B option to Seals-Jones' 1A, and it also gives Ricky a much better mentor than Jermaine Gresham in the past. In addition we have added Charles Johnson for the veteran minimum. His addition is a little bit of a shot in the dark, hoping that he has fully recovered from knee surgery, and is able to perform again at a high level. This was a buy low, high ceiling pick up that we hope turns out for us. We also have returned free agents Kerwyn Williams and John Wetzel to provide depth at their respective positions.

On the defensive side of the ball, we had originally hoped to add a competent corner opposite Patrick Peterson through free agency. Things don't always go according to plan, so we made a move to bring Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie back to where he started. Opposing QBs are now terrified of our defense, not only do you have Chandler Jones and Markus Golden charging towards you, but there's not a weak spot in the secondary. With PP and DRC on the outsides, Tyrann Mathieu in the slot, with veteran Antoine Bethea paired with the young Budda Baker, and to even add Deone Bucanon, Haasan Reddick, and Karlos Dansby to mix from the linebacker position makes this an incredibly difficult defense to pass against. I am confident that this is a top 5 defense in the league with the addition of DRC. We were also lucky enough to bring back some experienced depth pieces. Olsen Pierre had a breakthrough year as part of the defensive line rotation and will look to build on that this year. Karlos Dansby is a future Ring of Honor member for the Cardinals and will be able to spell both Bucannon and Reddick when needed. We also were able to add backup safety Eddie Pleasant from the Texans who sneakily had 77.3 pff grade playing as a backup safety in Houston. He will fix into our defensive backfield rotation in dime packages as well.

With the team that I have been able to put together, I am very confident in their abilities. So much so that I believe the current roster to be a playoff team for certain. The draft will only be able to add more depth and talent to an already outstanding roster. Now the focus is making a playoff roster into a roster that can win the West, NFC, and bring a championship to Arizona.

Giants after Round 1.

I went to work on acquiring additional draft picks.  I felt that anything other than quarterback the value wasn't there that high in the draft.  Moving down to pick six allowed me more flexibility while also picking up the Jets 2019 first round pick.  Depending on how their 2018 season plays out, we could be running around next year with a top pick or two...lol.

I unloaded the baggage that is Eli Apple for a decent value in the 3rd round.

Cut a few players the only mentionable was Brandon Marshall.

I had offers on four players 3 UFA and one resign.

2306 - Malcolm Butler - CB
3890 - Weston Richburg - C
1888 - Nate Solder - LT
2295 - Tahir Whitehead - 43OLB

Nate Solder was a priority as it would have allowed me to move the Ereck Flowers to the right side if not on the bench.  No need to go into details about this but the total contract amount I offered was in the 60+ range.

Another position of need was linebacker, again was outbid on Tahir Whitehead, whom I thought would of made a great addition to the Giants defense.

Even before releasing Eli Apple, I wanted to find a sure fire starter opposite Janoris Jenkins.  Malcolm Butler gives me that.  I had a feeling that his benching during the super bowl would raise flags for other teams.  Not sure if that was the case or not but the Giants were the only team to offer him a contract in the first round of bidding.

Weston Richburg gives me, who I think, has the potential to be one of the better centers in the league.  IF I can get him something better than what he's had in the past surrounding him.  Poor play on the edge, pulled the guards too much and left him holding the bag.

I've also matched the offer on Brett Jones our back up center, a stud in the CFL just now learning the NFL.

Giants After Round 2 of Free Agency

The front office spent every slot they had in bidding on 4 offensive lineman.  Winning all four was not surprising since they spent mega bucks on Seantrel Henderson, coming off suspension for his use of medical cannabis to treat crohn's disease.  The Giants weren't the only team to offer Henderson a contract just the only one to offer a 5 year deal worth almost 30 million.

  • Buffalo offered 7.5 m for 3 years
  • Philly 3 year for a total 3 million.

The names; Alex Boone, DJ Fluker and Matt Tobin aren't the answers to fixing the Giants offensive line issues but those names are head and shoulders better  than what the team had penciled in previously.

Matt Tobin and Ereck Flowers will be competing for the starting role at left tackle.

Alex Boone is our starting LG and Fluker the starting RG with Henderson penciled in as the starting RT.

The center position will be manned by Weston Richburg.

Giants are also looking to claim Willie Beavers - RG off waivers.

While the Giants were attempting to find some form of starters for the offensive line, the niners quietly crept in the back door and stole, arguably their best cornerback last year in Ross Cockrell, who is turning into a solid zone coverage corner.  That alone gives them an A for this week's grades.

Giants after Round 3

giphy.gif

I've basically spent my load in this round of FA.

Minutes before the deadline, I was able to acquire Kelvin Beachum from the Jets for a early 4th round selection.

Acquiring another tackle to compete for the starting role, allows me to move Flowers to the other side to play tackle where I think he's better suited.

Also, noteworthy is DRC was traded to Arizona for a 3rd round pick.  I normally wouldn't have traded him but after landing Malcolm Brown in the first round and DRC on his final year, I can say that I got decent value for him.

In this round of FA I had the following offers on the table.

David Amerson CB
Devon Kennard 43OLB
Orleans Darkwa RB
Paul Worrilow 43OLB
Captain Munnerlyn CB
Jay Bromley 43DT

Signing David Amerson gives me the option of having him play opposite of Brown and moving Janoris Jenkins inside in nickel formations, where he would be a nightmare for opposing teams.

Devon Kennard was a resign for strong side linebacker.

Orleans Darkwa was our best running back.

Paul Worrilow has dropped the past couple years, but his first 3 years in the pros he was a tackling machine.

I bet many of you are asking why would I release Mike Iupati for Evan Smith. And my answer is simple, David Johnson, Markus Golden, and Budda Baker. All are currently on their rookie contracts. I need to keep that core of players together, and I cannot afford to pay an under performing Mike Iupati as rich as his contract was for the next several year. Now that being said, it is creating a potential question mark long term for me on the offensive line, but I will not accept mediocre players for ridiculous contracts (like Iupati) as a reason for not being able to re-sign Johnson or Golden next offseason.

I can see that line of thinking for a team that is possibly in a mini rebuild process.  It is different for a team that has a deep playoff run as a realistic goal for 2018.

All depends on how you view your team.
