I can see that line of thinking for a team that is possibly in a mini rebuild process.  It is different for a team that has a deep playoff run as a realistic goal for 2018.

All depends on how you view your team.

The thing also to consider is that Iupati is not a long term solution at the LG position. By every way possible he has not been the all pro guard we felt we were getting when we signed him several years ago, and I am not willing to pay all pro money for someone who isn't all pro. With a very capable guard added from Evan Smith, I don't think I lose out on skill at all. As a matter of fact, I think I gain some in that regard. If I thought that a deep playoff run in 2018 wasn't realistic, I would have gotten rid of Iupati a long time ago. Now that I have ensured a replacement, I can now make the move I had been hoping to make all along. Now it just brings a question as to the long term quality of my line with Smith and Strief being rentals

The Buccaneers have tried to do their revamp mostly focusing on the defense so far. Offensively traded for Mike Iupati to stop gap at guard, and also for DeMarco Murray to stop gap at RB. Each player likely isn't playing like a star, but they have been in the past -- and aren't embarrassing starters to roll out next year. If they have a rebound year we are all for that in rentals.

Defensively, the scheme changes to a 4-3 Under. To run this we start at the defensive line. On one side we have two players 2 gaping, where there responsibilities are the gaps to the left and right of the player they are lined up against. At 5 technique defensive end (formerly William Gholston, and now Muhammad Wilkerson) the line up straight up or on the shoulder of an offensive tackle and play both the edge and the gap between the guard. At 1 technique (formerly Chris Baker, and now Dontari Poe) we need a mammoth man that can occupy two players consistently to allow the 3 technique (Gerald McCoy) to shoot his gap between the center and guard, and for the 5tech to not get double teamed for an inside run. Three tech remains the same with Gerald McCoy, but it should be a much more productive McCoy with the new additions playing on the line with him. Speaking of additions, the third is Robert Quinn (who replaces Noah Spence, who becomes his rotational back up and OLB rusher opposite Quinn in 3-4 looks). Robert Quinn has previously put up some insane sack numbers, but hasn't been very strong against the run. With Wilkerson, Poe and McCoy though, and playing 9tech, Quinn's role is to pin the ears back and sack the QB.

In the secondary we upgraded Brent Grimes, Ryan Smith, and Robert McClain at boundary corners to Trumaine Johnson, Bashaud Breeland while retaining Smith and McClain as reserves. Vernon Hargreaves gets to remain in the slot where he succeeded after struggling on the outside. Justin Evans returns with a new stop gap replacing TJ Ward in one year rental Jimmie Ward (who can play CB should we need).

Losses in terms of loss without an upgrade would be at SLB, a position which I like in the draft (and we traded for likely practice squad but last year Raider play maker in the preseason LaTroy Lewis), where Kendall Beckwith was traded to the Titans to recoup the 4th round pick traded to get Wilkerson from the Jets. Likewise, the 3rd round pick to gain Robert Quinn was recuperated with another 3rd to trade down to the 11th overall pick (after other teams I judged to target similar players traded ahead of pick #7). Also of note, Matt Bryant returns to Tampa replacing the "competition to not miss FGs and XP" duo (trio? if including Aguayo who was supposed to solve this multiyear issue) of Nick Folk and Patrick Murray.

Giants after Round 3

giphy.gif

I've basically spent my load in this round of FA.

Minutes before the deadline, I was able to acquire Kelvin Beachum from the Jets for a early 4th round selection.

Acquiring another tackle to compete for the starting role, allows me to move Flowers to the other side to play tackle where I think he's better suited.

Also, noteworthy is DRC was traded to Arizona for a 3rd round pick.  I normally wouldn't have traded him but after landing Malcolm Brown in the first round and DRC on his final year, I can say that I got decent value for him.

In this round of FA I had the following offers on the table.

David Amerson CB
Devon Kennard 43OLB
Orleans Darkwa RB
Paul Worrilow 43OLB
Captain Munnerlyn CB
Jay Bromley 43DT

Signing David Amerson gives me the option of having him play opposite of Brown and moving Janoris Jenkins inside in nickel formations, where he would be a nightmare for opposing teams.

Devon Kennard was a resign for strong side linebacker.

Orleans Darkwa was our best running back.

Paul Worrilow has dropped the past couple years, but his first 3 years in the pros he was a tackling machine.

After Round 4

It's been 3 days since my last confession.

Giants weren't too active in this round of free agency, but still feel like we walked away with some talent.

Jordan Hill 43DT
Marquez Williams FB
Travis Rudolph WR

Being outbid by the Bills for Jay Bromley, I picked up Jordan Hill on the cheap....good reason he isn't a pro bowler but did some decent things for Seattle his second year with 5.5 sacks.  Hasn't seen much from him since but hopefully he doesn't see much playing time anyway.

Marquez Williams at full back is just what the Giants need, with the running backs having a hard time finding open lanes, the idea is that Williams can go beast mode and create those lanes.

Travis Rudolph was a resign that just gives the Giants more depth at receiver.  He did alright in the absence of our starters.

Look for me to be a little more active in the next round.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 2ND FREE AGENCY PRESS CONFERENCE

Hello. I'd like you to remind you all again that the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES ARE SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS. God, that never gets old, does it? Woo!!!!

Anyway, now to sum up our Free Agent move since the last time we spoke.

First we picked up  CB/RS Cyrus Jones in a trade with the New England Patriots. While Jones has had is struggles, we will give him a chance to win a spot both as a depth CB and a return specialist. Someone with Cyrus' dynamic potential in the return game is worth the flier of 7th Round pick.

We went back to Free Agency to grab several depth players we are really excited about. First of all, S Cody Davis is a player that I think fits what we do on defense really well. He is good in coverage which is what we will ask our 3rd Safety to do the most and also adds really good value on special teams which is also important to us. We think he will be a valuable depth player and play some serious meaningful snaps for us this year. Then we added LB Gerald Hodges who we feel is a solid contributor and can be a serviceable backup at any LB position. We are also thrilled to welcome back DT Cedric Thornton who will be with us for a second tour of duty. Cedric is a really good run defender and that veteran presence that knows our locker room and our culture here in Philadelphia will be key. He will also be great veteran depth to add along with young players we are excited about in Qualls and Vaeo.

Speaking of players with their second stint here in Philly, we brought back QB Mark Sanchez. We feel very comfortable with what Mark can do as a pack up and that, as a veteran who knows us and our system and this city, can step in and help us win if he is called upon. T James Hurst is a tackle that I really liked  coming out and I feel like we can put him on this roster and let him compete to provide depth on our offensive line. We are always looking to add talented players to our fronts. We are also thrilled to have RB Darren Sproles back in Philadelphia for his final season. Darren wanted to come back for one more year after spending most of our Super Bowl Championship run on injured reserve. Darren is invaluable both on and off the field and we are happy to continue to have his services and allow him to exit the game with us and on his terms. Ajayi, Clement and Sproles is as good of a RB trio as their is in this league. We may dip our toes in Free Agency again or perhaps in the trade market, but most of our attention will now be geared towards the draft.

Time's yours......

Giants after Round 5

Well we are officially broke, can't squeeze another drop.

Did a trade with the Colts acquiring power back Matt Jones in exchange for John Jerry, this trade freed up a few million which allowed me to sign the following players.

5771 - Brian Schwenke - RG

6739 - Dakota Dozier - LG

4506 - Cody Latimer - WR

I continue to bring in players to compete for depth across the offensive line.  Schwenke and Dozier should push for back up roles on fairly cheap contracts.

Cody Latimer should compete for the starting job opposite Odell as the current roster is pretty spoty.  Likely a position I address in the draft.

Since my last post the Cards have just been adding depth like crazy recently. Starting on the defensive side of the ball Barkevious Mingo slots into that #3 edge rusher spot quite nicely. Obviously Chandler Jones and Markus Golden are one and two, but the depth behind them was a little lacking to say the least. Adding Mingo gives us someone with starting experience that can fill in and preform decently in the event that either were to go down. Especially when you check out his 72.1 pff score. Ifeyani Momah has been a project that hasn't turned out too much out here in the desert, but he's given some solid special teams performances in the past, and flashed some ability in the passing game. I'm very comfortable with him as my third tight end. Torrey Smith at the moment likely slots in as our #2 receiver. I needed someone with size who I felt comfortable could produce at least 500+ yards receiving. Given that he wasn't the top choice in Philly and the Dumpster fire that he was in with SF, I'm willing to take the shot that he could produce at a high level once again. However, with David Johnson and Seals-Jones figuring to fix largely into the passing game this year, he likely still is option #4 in the passing game.

With Zach Strief staring down retirement, we have made some contingency plans for what we could manage.

Going into the draft we like a lot of the offensive linemen in this draft, but we don't feel like we need to add to the o-line. While it would be nice to plan for the future, given Strief and Evan Smith are both in the older realms of their careers, that would definitely be a luxury at this point. Adding Torrey Smith made me comfortable with my receivers, but it could certainly use some improvements, and again prepare us for life after Larry. Tyrod Taylor is the only QB on the roster at the moment, but we don't feel handcuffed into drafting a QB here either. But defensively there are certainly areas to improve. Adding another DB could certainly be helpful as our depth is a little lacking. Top end defensive line talent could be very intriguing for us as well. We like our ILBs and Edge rushers, but you truthfully can never have too many talented players. There's a lot of
