Win tonight would virtually eliminate the Phillies chances and take the wind out of their sails for games 2 and 3. Win Game 1, the chances of a sweep grow big time. Seeing as how the only other option is to lose Game 1, I'd say winning game 1 is their only chance of a sweep.

brooks1957
Tuesday morning of the Final Week of the Season: AL East: NY Yankees (clinched) AL West: Houston Astros (clinched) AL Central: Minnesota Twins (all but clinched - Magic Number 4 with just 6 games to go) So, mathematically - you have 4 teams fighting for 3 playoff spots. Realistically, you have 3 teams fighting for 2 spots. Here's the current standings: Minnesota - 4 game lead in the AL Central - would take a Philadelphia-esque (1964) type collapse for them to miss the playoffs. Book them in as AL Central champs. They have six road games to go - (3) @ DET, and (3) @ KC. Oakland - current holders of the the top wild card spot by 1-1/2 games over the Rays. You can probably pencil them in as the host of the AL Wild Card game. The 6 road games they finish with are (3) @ LAA, and (3) @ SEA. Tampa Bay - They beat the Red Sox last night 7-4 to move 1/2 ahead of the Indians for the final wild card spot. They are, in my opinion, in a better position to lock up a spot than the Tribe. They only have 5 games to go - (2) at home against the already clinched Yankees, and then (3) on the road in Canada against the Blue Jays. Cleveland - Interleague play and its CLEAR advantage to the National League may bite the Tribe in the butt here. Since there is not a universal league rule regarding the DH, National League teams are never penalized. And, due to a sadistic twist of fate on the schedule, CLE has an interleague series being played in the final series of the year. WTF? If I was commissioner, I would enact the following (in order of importance): All interleague games must be scheduled to be played no later than Aug. 31. And the final (4) series of the year must be against division opponents. You cannot tell me there are not smart enough people and technologies available to make this a reality. Suspend all interleague play until a universal DH rule is adopted - one way or the other. Lastly, if suggestion 2 does not happen, prohibit NL clubs from using a DH in AL parks in ALL contests - regular season and playoffs. If the NL is so in love with the "purist" format of baseball, do NOT allow them the benefit of adding a slugger to their lineup away from home. The Tribe finishes with (3) @ CWS, and (3) @ WAS - where they will be forced to played Reyes in RF if they want to keep his bat in the lineup. brooks1957
Frickin' Tampa Bay - came back late to beat the Yankees.......... However Oakland lost last night. Their wild card lead cut to 1/2 a game over TB, followed by the Tribe nipping at their heels 1/2 game on the outside looking in. Three teams within 1 game of each other. All other teams, except for division leaders, have been eliminated from postseason competition. The outfield is even harder to predict. Mercado in Center. Naquin in right, Zimmer in left with Luplow platooning? Is Zimmer even in the plans for next season?
