The argument for not doing it is that you are in position to get not 1 but 2 top 4 players in the draft who could change the face of your franchise. Why keep trading out of position to get those guys and delaying it until next year.

That chain of trading down for more picks has led us to the worst 2 year stretch in NFL history because we are always trading down and watching other guys take OBJ, Aaron Donald, Deshaun Watson, Carson Wentz, ect. Those could be our guys, but the Browns traded down and decided not to take them because they valued more draft picks.

My prize for sitting here and watching 0-16 has netted me 2 of the best 4 players in the country to turn that around. Identify them and Take them!

because instead of getting 1 and 4 this year and 10 next year you get say... 1 and 12 this year and 10 and 12 next year, or maybe that extra 12th overall pick turns into the 4th overall pick again with an injury.

the chain of trading down isnt what single handedly lead us to the worst 2 year stretch in history.  dont be reductive.

I think the franchise tag is a load of crap if used for more than 1 season. And for some players it can be used to achieve a huge discount.
Aaron Donald would be a good example. on a 5th year option it is a discount for the team, he franchise tag would also be a discount for the Rams as he should be the highest paid non skill player in the League.

To mke it worthwhile being in the NFL a player really has to achieve a second contract IMO

The last thing this roster needs is another 8+ mid/late round rookies coming in on top of the 20+ we are already developing. Somethings gotta give.

Agree.

trade picks into next year so we can get even more first rounders and limit the amount of young players on the 2018 roster?

Use some to add a couple of vets in trades, too.

Some combination of consolidating to trade up, trading for future picks and trading for  vets should leave us taking only 5-6 players from this year's draft, which is fine by me.

One reason this year is that except for QB, the "top" players aren't all that exciting.

Mayfield inducted incontince

Solving the QB position is his highest priority.

The whole Browns' world and the Haslam's are watching.

The selection will define him for better or worse.

I think the only way he picks Mayfield is if he is aiming for early retirement.

we didn't miss out on OBJ or Donald because of trading down. We had the opportunity to draft either of them and we took Gilbert instead.

I have to agree with H2THalzzo, trading down has destroyed this franchise and led us to a 1-31 record. Studs are found most often in the top 5 and the top 10, trading back from #4 may be possible, but you do not trade back further than #10 in any scenario, as the drop off in talent as prospects is quite significant, past the 10th pick, especially in finding studs which make up all winning rosters. First round picks later in the draft, produced Weedon and Manziel for us and that is the chance you are taking when moving out of a top 10 pick.

That is pretty obvious, the NFLPA is pretty weak and the latest CBA so favours the owners, it is a joke. That's why they wanted rookie contracts limited by a cap, it was the driving force that pushed up player contracts. When you consider how tough pro football is and that the average player only survives 5 years in the league, you realize the significance of small rookie contracts. Really, only QB's gained from the cap on rookies, the rest of the players have to survive injury free, usually for 4 or 5 years, to make real money playing pro football, especially star RB's.

If I am a high school kid, football would be the last sport I would pick, if he is interested in a pro career, unless he is a talented QB. The NFL has always lied about salaries by including unguaranteed money when posting salaries, money that most players outside of QB's rarely ever receive.

When you consider the pounding your body takes playing the sport and the effects that last the rest of your life, players simply are not paid enough for those consequences. Most of the retired players are lucky if they can still walk without serious help, after their playing days are over.

so trading 12 (woulda been Hooker) for 22 (peppers) and 2018 4 overall is part of why we're losing?

the perpetual first could be in the top 5... as evidenced by this year

if we get rid of the perpetual first, we'll just have a normal draft every year, likely outside of the top 5.
dont you want a top 5 pick every year? I'd at least like a shot at it for not being garbage

Also... we took a player at 1 last year.

Trading down has not hurt this team even in the slightest. The inability to property identify talent is what has crippled this team. Every year any team can find pro bowl impact players within the Top 50 picks. The are there to be had every single draft even as far back as the 50ish range. It is the teams that evaluate and identify the talent the best and make the right picks that flourish. It has nothing to do with where they are picking.

Doesn't matter that it's a 4 overall this year or in the top 5 next year if your strategy is to keep trading out of it for the Phil Taylors of the world instead of taking the Julio Jonses
