The 49ers did not have to worry about the salary cap or free agency back then, it was much easier for a franchise to be dominant over a long period of time than it is now. The Patriots have put together the greatest dynasty in NFL history in spite of all that. I don't think this is an argument against Montana however, SB's are won by teams. Possibly. Maybe they win more. 49ers didn't have to worry sbout the salary cap, neither did the Giants, Bears, Broncos, or Redskins. Everyone had the same disadvantage. 49ers weren't the only stacked team at the time. Your coaching staff still had to be able to replenish talent through the draft. Some teams just weren't as good at doing so. Just like now.

Just out of curiosity, if Tom Brady played 2 more years and managed to surpass Manning in all the relevant statistical categories and retire number 1 all time in those statistical columns, retire #1 in SB wins, retire with all of the records he holds, retire with all of the awards, all of the accolades, etc etc, would you still consider Manning the Greatest QB of All Time? If so, why? What would be his argument over Brady at that point?

Aikman, Kelly, Favre and Young shared the '90's. Marino, Elway and Montana the '80's. Staubach, Griese, Tarkenton and Bradshaw the '70's. Even 1990s highlights look vintage by now. Rodgers? Manning? Brees? Brady had tremendous competition. I would say, compared to the lists you put together, Brady played with the stiffert competition.
