TCMD Ravens War Room

Recommended Posts

Greetings. I've volunteered to run the Baltimore Ravens in the Total Control Mock Draft this year. I'm actually a Pats/Lions fan but no one had stepped forward to run Baltimore.

I'm going to use this space as a Suggestion box style war room, where I'm in total control of each transaction and am simply asking for the groups opinions on the topics like trades and draft picks.

Trade #1 (+$70,000 in Cap Space)

OLB Za'Darius Smith for OT John Theus - Carolina Panthers

Smith is in the way for playing time for both Tyuus Bowser and Tim Williams. I save a little cap space and get depth at RT/RG in John Theus.

Trade #2 (-$898,390 in Cap Space)

2018 4th round pick (120th overall) for WR Phillip Dorsett - New England Patriots

Dorsett was buried on the Depth chart in Indy and NE. Here he gets a chance to start and can be a deep threat for Flacco. With the 3rd round Comp pick I felt a 4th rounder was fair compensation since he was traded for Brisett earlier in the year who was a 3rd round pick (91st overall).

Well we didn't need a deep threat and Za'Darius Smith isn't in anyone's way. Tim Williams is a pass rush specialist who should only come in on obvious passing downs, usually 3rd and X. In those situations Smith is used as an interior rusher next to Willie Henry, he's also our second best EDGE piece against the run. Tyus Bowser plays SAM and ZDS does not.

If we trade Smith it will be for draft capital not for a backup tackle, and certainly not at guard where we're stacked. He's less likely to be moved then Jernigan was last year, we don't have the same kind of depth at OLB we did at DI, and he isn't for sure gone after this next contract of his.

Also Patrick Ricard is our starting FB, the #1 ranked one according to PFF.

I don't even remember a post about this TCMD, usually one of our members steps forward to participate. Oh well, best of luck.

TCMD isn't the same thing as FFMD (the "official" mock draft run by the mods).

Its a GM Mock (with one person only in charge of any given team) that has filled in the space that FFMD used to occupy, run by a single poster that believes his method is an improvement on the old FFMD1 that tried to mock the entire off-season but got somewhat bogged down by details and people trying to "win" the mock.

FWIW, its looking like FFMD2 (the one that involves only drafting players) might be back this year

Gotcha.

Trade #3 (+$1M in Cap Savings)

WR Jeremy Maclin for TE Vernon Davis - Washington Redskins

With Maclin being a candidate for release to free up cap space and other teams basically wanting him for nothing for that reason I decided to address the TE spot and acquired Vernon Davis. He's younger than Ben Watson by 3 years and the move saves the team $1M in cap space. The move also reunites Maclin with Alex Smith in Washington. Their production last year was about the same but that's a lot better coming from the pass catching TE spot versus the WR position.

I don't believe I am going to resign any of the Ravens FA because I believe the general consensus is that Matt Skura and a draft pick can take over at C for Jensen. Are there and FA people think are worth resigning?

I'm sorry to be overly critical, but I hate all of those trades.

1. We don't need OT depth and trading away Za'Darius Smith does nothing for us.

2. Philip Dorset is a horrible trade.

3. Vernon Davis is another horrible trade. We need guys with reliable hands, especially at the TE position, and we need to get younger. If we want a veteran TE, just keep Watson.

Noted. I did get 4 years younger at WR and 3 years younger at TE though. Because of the Cap limitations Baltimore is always going to be a challenge. I went for minimal cap impact trades.

Yeah, don't see any reason to sign any of those FAs.

Of the trades made, the Vernon Davis one is the least bad.  As others have said, Smith for a back-up OG/OT does nothing for us, and I'm just not a fan of Dorsett (and never have been)

Younger =/= better. Yes, we need to get younger, but Vernon Davis at TE isn't the answer and he's not a reliable target. Also, Philip Dorsett might be out of the league next year, let alone a #1/#2 WR for any team. Yeah our cap sucks, but it is what it is.
