Less-than-enthusiastic endorsement from beat writer on the Panthers' site, Catch Scratch Reader or Yer Darn Tootin', We Like Cam Newton!

Aside from the 2015 season, Mike Shula’s time in Carolina was marred with disappointment. One of the biggest problems we had with him was he couldn’t adjust to what the other team was doing during the game. He also is terrible at situational play-calling and can get predictable at times. Panthers fans as a whole pretty much hate him at this point because his lack of play-calling ability hindered the offense so much. To be fair to him, every fan base hates their offensive coordinator and he got a lot of hate that he really didn’t deserve. Even when his play-calls were good, but didn’t work because of bad execution by the players, he still took the blame.

Basically, if the Giants are hiring him to call plays it’s a terrible idea. If they’re hiring him to consult with the play-caller and craft the offense, then it’s a good hire. Shula is creative, and he can make an offense work around the personnel he’s given... as long as you don’t let him manage the situational play calling duties.

The bolded is what he will be doing. Shurmur has already said he is calling plays.

Why are NFL teams so lazy? Instead of actually doing any research and expanding beyond their comfort zone, so many teams are just like "Well this guy's name is Shula or Turner" or whatever retread scenario you can think of and then hire him. Then when that person obviously fails, they repeat the same damn process.

It's Carolina, oh Shula "hell yea his Dad was good" after several years of pain he got fired for being nothing like Don. Now Turner "Hell yea, Turner was good" WAS not is like noted above these teams needs to scout OC/DC a little more than they do and not go by name alone.

I don't like Offensive Coordinators doubling as QB coaches. He won't be calling plays but that's still a lot of work to do for Shula.

so Bevel still doesn't have a job yet...?

He coached doug before so if doug decides to outside hire I think the Eagles will hire Bevel.

How many half-decent OCs do you think there are in the NFL? The thread title makes it clear that he was nowhere near their first choice, but they have to get SOMEBODY in. Accusing them of not doing any research when you really have no idea what went into the hiring process seems lazy to me.

How many teams actually try to explore outside of washed up NFL retreads?

The Giants just did with Mcadoo. You could see how they'd be a bit spurned by that and opt for proven commodities for their next hires.

It's a good hire if and only if Shula is here to develop a young QB. Otherwise it's a waste of time and resources. Father time already has Eli in its clutches and it's never letting go.

@minutemancl- you make a good point: the Giants were burned by promoting one of those boyish whiz-kids, and they paid for it. As is true in most sports, the NFL tends to be reactionary- fail with a young hopeful, go with a proven veteran the next time. One hopes, at least, that the maturity of Shurmur will better control what was a dysfunctional locker-room under McAdoo.

McAdoo was just caught in the perfect injury storm. Giants won about 1 game after McAdoo's firing. The locker room will be dysfunctional again if the losing continues and the FO doesn't make a QB switch. That's unlikely because Beckham will be healthy but depending on players feel, they'll check out if the offense is anemic again.  Talk about age and maturity all you like but  Shurmur can't make Eli Apple play if the latter feels he is getting blamed for the offense's ineptitude. We can't release the whole team, many of whom are good players, while continuing to pay Eli Manning 20+ million.

They also won 0 through the first 5, including a period of time where everyone was healthy. His offense was broken and he couldn't lead the team. It wasn't just injuries.
