53 Man Predictions with practice Squad

It's only a matter of time before London wanders into the new forum from across the pond.  With that in mind, I'll start this.  Final predictions due in between the third and fourth preseason game if you want to participate in the competition.

Offense

QB-2

This one's easy.  Dalton starts.  McCarron backs up.  Driskell to the practice squad (unless a plethora of injuries happen between now and the end of preseason)

RB-4

Mixon, Bernard, and Hill for sure.  Whoever comes off of PUP first between Peerman and Wilson gets the nod here.  the, other may stay there until mid season when other guys inevitably go down.  I l know they count Wilson as a safety, but in the end, probably only one of these guys makes the roster, no matter what position you list them at.  Boom to the PS

TE-4

Eifert, Uzamah, Kroft and Hewitt.  There's nothing else to see here.  Shrenk to the PS

WR-7

Green, LaFell, Boyd, Ross, Malone, Core, Erickson. True to their word, the team keeps 7.  Due to the high number here, they might not sign a guy to the PS as these guys will all need reps in some fashion.

OL-8

Ogbuehi, Boling, Bodine, Smith, Fisher, Johnson, Westerman and..... Hopkins

DL-9

Atkins, Billings, Dunlap, Johnson, Willis, Glascow, Hardison, Williams, and Clarke/Gilberry winner.

LB-6

Burfict, Minter, Vigil, Rey, Lawson and Dawson/Flowers/Evans.  Will pick the 6th guy later.  At least Evans has practice squad eligibility.

DB-10

Kirkpatrick, (Jones), Dennard, Jackson, Shaw, Russell, Iloka, Williams, Smith, Fejedelum and McRae/Benwikere.  If it's Mcrae, he goes to PS by Thursday to make room for Jones.  If it's bene., who knows, he probably gets cut that week.

Specialists-3

P-Huber

K-Elliot

LS  Harris

Practice Squad

Driskell  QB

Boom Williams  RB

Schrenk  TE

Evans-L

Nickerson  LB

Redman  OG

some OT

Dean  DT

Brown DE

another OL

gaps to be filled when I actually get a sense for PS guys

@INbengalfan London hasn't seen either of the PM's i've sent.  So probably best case scenario is that he shows up on August 12th.  Beta signups end today.  So he'll be on the outside looking in until then.

I'll post a predication later and probably revise it based on injuries later in the preseason.

Ok here's my prediction:

Offense (25)
QB: Dalton, McCarron (2)
RB: Mixon, Bernard, Hill, Peerman (4)
FB: Hewitt (1)
TE: Eifert, Uzomah, Kroft (3)
WR: Green, Lafell, Ross, Boyd, Malone, Erickson, Core (7)
OL: Ogbuehi, Fisher, Smith, Boling, Hopkins, Bodine, Westerman, Winston (8) (Dielman to PS)

Defense (25)
DE: Dunlap, Clarke, Willis, Lawson, Johnson (5)
DT: Atkins, Billings, Glasgow, Hardison, Williams (5)
LB: Burfict, Minter, Rey, Vigil, Flowers, Evans (6)
CB: Kirkpatrick, Shaw, Jackson III, Dennard, Russell (5) (Jones suspended)
S: Iloka, Williams, Smith, Fejedelem (4)

Special Teams (3)
P: Huber (1)
K: Elliot (1)
LS: Harris (1)

Notable cuts: Bene Benwikere, JJ Dielman, Brandon Thompson, Pat Sims, PJ Dawson

On the bubble: Jeremy Hill, Alex Erickson, Cody Core, Michael Johnson, DeShawn Williams, KeiVarae Russell, Jordan Evans, Eric Winston

When Jones returns from his one game suspension, they'll have a hard decision to make.  I don't think they can carry just 5 CB's all season, and probably don't want to cut Benwikere or Russell.  So i think it'll come down to one of the guys i listed as on the bubble (assuming health).  Obviously if someone gets hurt, it makes the decision very easy.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hearing some of the news from the BBP on Michael Johnson, and i may be changing my mind on him.  I know it would leave them short on DE's, but i don't think he's one of their best 53 players and i think they need to cut him.  He hasn't been good in a while, and it sounds like he's getting worse.  Cut bait, keep 3 true DE's and use Hardison/Lawson as swing DE's.

That would afford them to keep Bene Benwikere or JJ Dielman, which is probably better both now and in the future.

IR-Brandon Wilson

Only change I made was adding Hopkins and putting Wilson on IR. I know the thought of having 10 OL players sounds like too much, while only keeing just 8 DL players. I would guess one of the OL players get cut once Jones comes back.

I have a hard time believing that Winston is going to make it. Maybe if he was playing well, but you don't keep an aging, bad 3rd RT for his locker room presence alone.

I'm about 97% sure he's getting cut. That frees up a dline spot for you.

Just to be clear, I would have no problem getting rid of Winston. He should of been gone a long time ago, but the fact is the Bengals have always had a bad habit letting some players hang around too long (see Brandon Tate, Robert Geathers, Rey Maualuga, Domata Peko).

I had Winston as a roster lock even before camp started, and while I agree now that his spot isn't safe, one bad game doesn't mean he's all of a sudden a guarantee cut.

Here's why i think he's gone.

It's been reported before that Marvin picks the first 46 players for his roster.  His "active list" if you will.  Duke Tobin picks the remaining 7 with the long term vision of the team in mind.

I have a hard time believing Winston is going to be in that first 46, given that he's the 3rd tackle, has reportedly looked really bad in practice and didn't show in the first preseason game.  Tobin certainly isn't going to pick a locker room guy with the long term vision in mind.

Plus, that hang around status tends to be reserved for guys who were drafted by the team, had some really good years, signed a big contract, then soured in their last year or two.  The Bengals tend to let those guys play out their deals out of loyalty and fear of eating dead money.

Winston is neither of those.  He was a mercenary tackle when they needed one.  Much closer to James Harrison than Rey Maualuga (did i finally spell that right?).

Very Interesting take you mentioned on how the process works.

To me, it comes down to if Andre Smith starts at RG or not. I'm not completely convinced Trey Hopkins may start there, and if they decided to cut Winston, then they have no choice but to put Andre Smith back at T, otherwise they have no other players that can play T. I would much rather they let Winston go, but that's only going to happen if Hopkins is the clear cut starting RG.

If Andre starts and has to move to tackle for any reason, Hopkins would slide in at guard. Winston only comes off the bench if two tackles are hurt.
