Za'Darius Smith: Did he have a good season or not?

"made significant pass rush contributions" I just want to know what that means! That's been my argument this whole time! haha. What did he do well? He obviously didn't actually produce any statistical accomplishments (pressures? hurries?) with only 3 sacks in over 500 snaps. Ken didn't mention that he was specifically great at taking up blockers and freeing up other pass rushers. So what is it? What were his "significant pass rush contributions"? Reading that summary, you'd think his best contribution was simply being able to line up inside and take snaps from our DL.

It's funny. Every single video I watch of our defense this year I'm watching Smith get stonewalled on a bull rush and then on 1-2 plays I'll notice someone getting good edge pressure, and it'll be Tyus freaking Bowser....ugh.

I mean I would read significant pass rush contributions to mean that he generated pressure on the quarterback.

I just think you’re needlessly over complicating what he’s saying. It’s a breakdown.

Someone could argue with a stat like a “sack” for instance and say, that’s such a ambiguous term. What did the player do? He simply tackled another player. But was his tackle a form tackle or an arm tackle. Did he cause a short loss on the sack or a long loss on the sack? Was his sack cheered by the fans? Was it a highlight reel sack... the term sack is truly just ambiguous and doesn’t tells us much about a player or a play.

Honestly, every time I see a sack, I just see a player run in without being touched and get a sack tackle and then dance, while other players are working to respectively break free of their blocks like the hard workers that they are. The sacker is a slacker.??‍♀️

Can anyone find pressure rates for individual players? I can't, but I would like to see how our pass rushers fared for QB pressures/hits/etc.

Maybe I am overcomplicating it, I just never noticed Za'Darius Smith making a difference on defense - especially not as much as I saw from Suggs/Judon/Bowser, and I haven't seen annyyyttthhhiinnggg to indicate otherwise, other than people saying "oh yeah he made a difference".

"Za’Darius Smith had 40 snaps and delivered 3 important QHs. He knocked down Hundley as he threw the interception to Weddle (Q1, 4:47). His stunt beat RT Spriggs for a QH and Hundley unloaded the ball for intentional grounding (Q4, 3:54) which is essentially a 10-yard sack. Finally, he twisted over Mosley to the inside to force the final interception to Humphrey (Q4, 2:25)."

"Za’Darius Smith rushed effectively with 4 pressures and a half sack in 37 pass snaps as I scored it. Those figures would be just OK for an edge rusher, but many of Smith’s pass snaps came from the inside."

Those are Smith's game notes from the Green Bay and Miami games, as I said Ken did them for every game. Those were just the first two I found but they're all there.

This is one of those examples, where an analyst on a podcast/interview says something like "he just can't throw those interceptions", when Flacco is picked off twice in the Bears game.

Seeing the game summary/statline makes great way for wrong conclusions.

Thank you! That's a start.
