Lol at "easily".  I wasnt aware Houston left the conference.

Memphis was 11-4 in the AAC last season with their 4 losses coming against Houston (3 points), Tulsa (1 point), SMU (2 points), and Tulsa (7 points). And when they played you guys in the conference tournament you beat them by 2 points.

Houston lost 3 of their top 5 scorers from last years team that accounted for 50% of their scoring production.

Houston will still be good but if Memphis adds Bates they're going to be one of the best teams in the country.

Houston reloaded? You added Kyler Edwards who was an okay player at Texas Tech, John Carlton who averaged 3 points and 4 rebounds at UConn, and three 3* recruits.

Again, that argument is so overblown. As I've already said before Penny has a better record at Memphis than Sampson did during his first 3 years at Houston.

I just think you're severely underrating how good Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren are going to be. They legitimately might be the two best players in college basketball next season.

Kyler Edwards wasnt just an OK player.  He was pretty dang good at Tech.  Josh Carlton will be a much better player under Sampson than he was under Hurley and he not even expected to start.  The 3* recruits are actually legit especially Ramon Walker who is was a 4 star on 247 sports.  Plus Fabian White is basically back for a full season, and they added a very good transfer from CSU Bakersfield in Taze Moore.

Not trying to derail the thread with Houston talk but i find it funny people are automatically assuming Memphis will run the conference and become a legit final 4 team and Houston isnt.

Memphis went 11-4 in the conference last year with 4 extremely close losses and are potentially adding the two best players in the country. Time will tell but Memphis will be very good if they land Bates.

Not to mention they added Larry Brown and Sheed to the coaching staff which is a major upgrade and should help Duren develop even without Bates.

cool story

John Calipari was 115-55 in his first 5 years at Memphis with 2 NCAA tournament appearances and 1 NCAA tournament win. Over his last 4 years with the program he went 137-14, made 4 NCAA tournaments, and in those tournaments Memphis made the Sweet 16, Elite 8 twice, and the national championship game once.

What changed for him and the program? They started to land elite recruits. I don't think anyone would consider Calipari a great coach from an X's and O's stand point, his time at Kentucky has proven that he's not. He has been able to win a ton of games when his teams are stacked but his teams have been average to below average when they're not.

Memphis has added Larry Brown (one of the greatest NBA/college coaches ever) and Rasheed Wallace to their staff this off-season. Penny also turned down an NBA job with the Magic to return as the coach at Memphis this year.

In recent college basketball recruiting history there have only been 3 classes with two top 5 players in them. Duke with Zion/Barrett who had a great year and lost in the Elite 8. Duke with Jayson Tatum/Harry Giles who had an okay season but Giles was hurt throughout his freshman year. And Kentucky with Julius Randle and Andrew Harrison who had a solid year and then went to the national championship game.

coach cal was coaching in the cusa when he did that.

memphis was still in pretty good shape when penny took over compared to when sampson took over at houston. its no comparision.  i expect memphis to make the tourney but people seriously thinking they will automatically be better than houston is hilarious.

9 ppg on 40% FG in 3 seasons there...

his freshman year he averaged 5 a game.  his last 2 seasons he averaged double digits while shooting 40 percent from 3 all 3 of those seasons. not to mention he is a pretty damn good defender. he isnt just an "ok" player.  he will definitely become a better player under sampson than he did under beard.

The AAC is made up of almost entirely teams that were previously in Conference USA, lol.

Penny was their third head coach in 4 years when he took over. Pastner and Sampson both were meh at Memphis and the program was definitely not in a good place when he was hired. Houston lost 3 starters from last years team including your both of your starting guards in Jarreau and Grimes, who was by far your best player. Who's going to start at guard for you this year?

Memphis will 100% be better than Houston if they add Emoni Bates.

He averaged 10 ppg on 40% FG as a junior, he's an okay player, nothing special. And you think that Sampson is a better coach/developer of talent then Chris Beard???
